How would you react if you get betrayed by your own family members? How would you respond if you get to know that they are throwing you into the sea of irresistible pain with an uncertain consequence?

You would cry out loud, you will try to hold yourself all alone as no one is left to rely upon.

That’s what happens with millions of girls all over the world.

Females are being cut down for their future husbands and so-called religion.

Yes, you heard it right!

Taking them to a dark place in the assurance of giving chocolates but all they could get is uncontrollable pain and the wish to die there and then

Yes, the dark rooms of these areas are evidence of countless screams. The walls here are the eye-witnesses of the crime committed.

It is not a story of a single woman but millions of them living in different regions across the world.

What’s this Brutal Practice Called?

This culture, rather I say brutal human abuse is called Female genital mutilation.

In the name of culture, lakhs of women have to go under severe pain as their genitalia is either partially or wholly removed. In similar cases, infibulation i.e. sewing the outer part of the vagina, and even in worst cases, scrapping and burning is done.

What is the reason for such a cruel and hazardous thing? If you listen to the perpetrators of FGM, they will defend it by saying “ It’s our culture, a woman enters into womanhood only after going through this, you know, the clitoris is necessary to be removed as it is dirty”, and the worst reason I’ve ever heard is that- It’s for the pleasure of groom! As FGM ensures that his wife is a virgin.

It doesn’t stop here! The woman has to go through this even after their marriage and child, and this time they have come up with another great reason. You know what? It is to ensure that the girl isn’t cheating! Hence, it prevents infidelity.

After knowing all this all I’m continuously trying to figure out what the hell is going on with these people? Are they doctors to claim that the clitoris is dirty and is necessary to be removed? Do women even have any right left there?

Tragically, the woman gets to open only before the sexual intercourse that has to be done with her groom. Can you imagine getting cut again just a few hours before sexual intercourse? No! It is beyond imagination and tolerance!

Why Put an End to FGM?

FGM has been declared illegal by the UN. Still, it is prevalent in many countries. Particularly, it is being done in parts of Africa, South America, Asia, Eastern Europe, and North America (migrants).

It is not related to any religion as no such religion permits such a thing! It is being done as a cultural thing. Although most of the people performing this are from Islam and Christianity.

It is not only painful till it stops hurting, it has disastrous consequences. Women undergoing FGM have a serious concern of having HIV, hemorrhage, infection, ulcers, anemia, sexual dysfunction, and so on. Many women have lost their lives due to the huge loss of blood.

200 million women alive today have been subjected to FGM. Apart from this, 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing the same every year.

It will take far more than mere efforts to put an end to or even reduce the effect of such custom on these peoples.

It is not like purity, entering into womanhood, virginity as they said, but a deliberate risk to lose every single woman who is getting cut.

It’s 11:11 and all I can do is to get a hold of myself after thinking about the suffering of those innocent lives.

Where does their conscience go when they take those little or even teenage girls to the bridge of pain and death?

Can We Ever Get Rid of FGM?

Maybe yes! this ray of hope came when I got to know that even these woman (mostly) wants to end this. Some of them even rescued their girls from being cut down.

It assures the hope of putting an end to this on one fine day!

Women and Men already go through a lot of shit! These customs are nothing but serious harm to all women out there. It is a certain and direct infringement of their Right to freedom and a threat to their precious lives.

It is not something that can be done within a day, week, month, or year! It will take time but if efforts are consistent, it will surely end.

Since I got to know about this, I wanted to let every woman and men know this as many of them are still unaware of this harsh reality.

To end this “Awareness is the need of the hour”. Let’s break these obsolete/outdated traditions and save our fellows from these abuses.
