Dr. Subhabrata Roychaudhuri (Secretary, The Science Association of Bengal, Kolkata, West Bengal, India) was conferred with the prestigious Dr. Jayanta Basu Memorial Award by Bangiya Vigyan Parishad (Kolkata, West Bengal, India ) for his monumental contributions towards science communication, science popularization, and science dissemination among the masses over past five facades in both urban and rural Bengal. He has been instrumental in organizing numerous seminars, symposiums, workshops, colloquiums, science education and nature camps, science fairs, exhibitions and galleries, quizzes, sit and draw as well as essay competitions across different schools, colleges, and universities on different social and environmental issues impacting our life and society.
Dr. Roy Chowdhury took a monumental role in inspiring several generations of school, college, and university students, teachers, academics, and researchers across various branches of Science, Humanities, and Social Science, both rural and urban-based science communicators and educators, journalists, lawyers, librarians, celebrities as well as ordinary citizens to become science-minded and to look at science as a part and parcel of our daily life. He took great pain in organizing various successful science popularization fairs and awareness camps on social and environmental issues across various districts of West Bengal and other states in Eastern India. Dr. Roy Chowdhury is a septuagenarian now; but he continues his work as a science communicator even at this age with the same level of honesty, sincerity, devotion, and love for his selfless work. Through his sincere efforts, he has been greatly successful in promoting science communication and science-mindedness among the masses in a large part of West Bengal state and Eastern India.
A citation and cash award of Rs 8k was presented to him by Dr. Sumitra Chowdhury, President, Bangiya Vigyan Parishad Kolkata on the occasion of the 76th Foundation Day celebration of Bangiya Vigyan Parishad on January 25th/2023. An outstanding book with a compilation of all Bengali writings by internationally acclaimed scientist Prof. Satyendra Nath Bose was also released on this occasion. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Roy Chowdhury emphasized and welcomed all to join hands and efforts to work together on a common platform to promote scientific temperament and attitude among the masses and help in building a better, progressive, welcoming society that is free of unwanted prejudices, social evils, and inequalities as well as superstitions.
