Magadh Mahila College, in collaboration with the International Benevolent Research Foundation (IBRF) in Kolkata, has organized a three-day National Workshop on "Climate Change and Global Warming: Impact and Resilience" from August 8th to 10th, 2024. The workshop began on the first day with an inaugural lamp-lighting ceremony performed by Prof. (Dr.) Namita Kumari, Principal of Magadh Mahila College, Patna; Prof. Parimal Khan from the Department of Botany at Patna University; and Dr. Pushpanjali Khare, Associate Professor in the Department of Botany at Magadh Mahila College, Patna with distinguished guests Dr. Tanmoy Rudra, Executive Secretary of the Confederation of Indian Universities (CIU), New Delhi; Dr. Tridib Bandopadhyay, Chairman of the Global Warming Reduction Centre (GWRC); and Dr. Arnesha Guha, Member Secretary of IBRF, India.
Following the inauguration, Prof. (Dr.) Namita Kumari, Principal of Magadh Mahila College, Patna, extended her greetings and welcomed the dignitaries. She then addressed the participants, emphasizing the critical issues of Climate Change and Global Warming. Dr. Tanmoy Rudra also spoke to the attendees, highlighting the workshop's significance and announcing the establishment of the Global Warming Reduction Centre at the college, with Dr. Pushpanjali Khare appointed as its Coordinator. Additionally, Dr. Tridib Bandopadhyay, Chairman of the Global Warming Reduction Centre, presented an overview of Climate Change's impact, illustrating his points with recent events in Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
In the first session of the workshop, two lectures were held across two modules. During the first module, Dr. Arnesha Guha, Member Secretary of IBRF, India, provided an introduction to key concepts such as climate, weather, and the physical science underlying Climate Change and Global Warming. In the second module, Dr. Saikat Basu, Research Director at the University of Letabridge, offered insights into the historical perspectives and analysis of Climate Change.
In the second session of the first day, three additional lectures were delivered by various resource persons across three modules. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Dey, Senior Scientist at the Academy of Science & Research (IASR), discussed the causes and impacts of Climate Change. Tridib Bandopadhyay, Chairman of the Global Warming Reduction Centre, elaborated on the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming. Dr. Saikat Basu, Research Director at the University of Letabridge addressed the challenges of Climate Change concerning Food Security.
On the second day of the National Workshop on "Climate Change and Global Warming: Impact and Resilience," hosted by Magadh Mahila College, Patna, in collaboration with the International Benevolent Research Foundation (IBRF) of Kolkata, altogether six engaging lectures were presented across six informative modules.
During the third session, Saikat Basu, Research Director at PFS, Letbridge, Alberta, Canada, led a compelling discussion on the relationship between vector-borne diseases and climate change, supported by recent global case studies. Following this, Dr. Mrinal Kanti Dey, Senior Scientist at the Academy of Science & Research (IASR), elucidated the connection between climate change and ozone depletion. Dr. Basu then returned to elaborate on the specific impacts of climate change in India, covering critical areas such as biodiversity, food security, nutrition, hydrology, and forestry.
In the fourth session, Dr. Basu further expanded on key concepts including "net zero" targets, green infrastructure, and the economic aspects of climate change, including its mitigation and resilience strategies. Tridib Bandopadhyay, Chairman of the Global Warming Reduction Centre, provided a historical overview of India's energy scenario from 1902 to the present. The final lecture of the day saw Dr. Basu exploring the role of artificial intelligence in monitoring climate change. Each lecture was highly interactive, offering participants valuable insights and fostering an engaging learning environment.
The third day of the National Workshop on "Climate Change and Global Warming: Impact and Resilience," hosted by Magadh Mahila College, Patna, in association with the International Benevolent Research Foundation (IBRF) of Kolkata, was marked by two compelling lecture sessions.
In the fifth session, Dr. Arnesha Guha, Member Secretary of IBRF, India, delivered two enlightening lectures. Her presentations covered the pressing issue of global warming and the collaborative efforts of international agencies to mitigate the negative impacts of developmental projects worldwide. Dr. Guha also addressed climate politics, policies, and international initiatives, including the Conference of the Parties (COP) and India’s commitments and achievements in this domain. The session concluded with an assessment comprising 50 multiple-choice questions.
The workshop's closing was highlighted by a valedictory session, where Dr. Namita Kumari, Principal of Magadh Mahila College, Patna, underscored the significance of the workshop topics and motivated participants to engage in activities aimed at combating global warming and climate change. Dr. Tanmoy Rudra, Executive Secretary of the Confederation of Indian Universities (CIU), New Delhi, announced the membership of students, research scholars, and faculty members. The session concluded with participants sharing their feedback on the workshop’s impact.
Dr. Pushpanjali Khare, Head of the Department of Botany at Magadh Mahila College, Patna, also contributed to the closing remarks, reflecting on the workshop's success and its contributions to raising awareness and fostering action against climate change.
