The LGBT community, which includes gay men, lesbian women, transgender individuals, and other queer people, is comprised of persons who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer and is defined by a common culture and social movements. The homophobic nature of the Indian society has made it a tabbo to be gay, bisexual, lesbian or transgender. Even though the law finally changed in India allowing the gay and lesbian couples to be in a live in relationship but no consent to the gay or lesbian Marriages has been legalized. But even if the law has finally changed the thinking of the people still has not. Some people are still against it thinking that it is some kind of disease that needs to be treated.
This lack of acceptance of one’s sexuality arises from the prejudice thinking that prevails in the Indian society. But why should one hide his/her own sexual identity just because of the peer pressure of the society. There have been several case reported where families have tried to convert their children from homosexual to heterosexual. The cases has significantly increased since the coronavirus pandemic hit the globe. Why is it so hard for the Indian society to accept people with their true sexual identity nothing can be more disheartening then this. We as a society should let go of the norms and beliefs that can put people in a place where they are forced to live according to the wishes and desires of others. Because these belief can sometimes put the person in dilemma leading them to take their own life.
People need to understand that being gay, lesbian or anything is not in the hands of a person this is just the way they are so, how can they be a threat to the society. Even though there is no legality provided to the gay or lesbian marriages but as the times are changing we can expect for legality of the same. The only way to do this is to spread awareness among people that it is okay to be the way you’re. We should also keep a check on what we pass onto our future generations. What kind of future we want from them the one in which they’re forced to live because of the certain thinking prevailing in the society or the one in which they feel comfortable in their own skin.
This new wave that has come to surface in the form of tans feminism is surely to create a impact. Several other laws has also changed like allowing the transgender to a better standard of living by legalizing work opportunities for them. Now it is our responsibility as a society on how we contribute to it by providing them with better work opportunities or sticking to the dogma of ancient beliefs. It is true that we have come very far in the regard of the acceptance of sexual identity if we are to study it from the post colonialism perspective where even writing about homosexuality lead a person in the world of criticism. But what about the rest of the people who even go to an extent of calling people with names such as gay, lesbian or bisexual because they think it is something cheap and dirty that if brought to the eye of public can put people to shame. Recently the story of a teenage boy went viral who took his own life because of the bullying that he had to face in his class by his own classmates who called him names and what not putting him under the mental pressure and leading to take his own life.
This disheartening story of the boy is just a small part of the bigger picture of the society who knows how many cases are there like this that sometimes don’t even get reported. And people under such situations are forced to take their own life. There is no doubt that we have come very far but we still have very far to go. The key to our happiness is acceptance towards our own true identity because that is what ultimately gives us the peace of mind that we crave for.
Just like every coin has two faces the same is the picture of the Indian society divided between the beliefs of how being bisexual, gay or lesbian is a sin or how it is the acceptance towards oneself. There are cases where families have given their consent for gay, lesbian or transgender marriages and also cases where due the fear of shame they force them to be heterosexual with the help of conversion therapies. The families who did give their consent have really set an example for the society to see and learn. This shows the changing view of the Indian society with a hope for better future for the queer community.
