It is a complex and multifaceted topic that touches on a variety of aspects of modern life. Over the last several decades, technology has advanced at an unprecedented pace. The advancement of technology made our life easy. Right from our daily tasks to complex physical work or brain work which required a lot of manpower and time has now been done much easier. This has created new opportunities for productivity, efficiency, and connectivity, but it has also presented new challenges and complexities that require careful consideration and adaptation. This lifestyle change has a significant impact on our perception of time.

As we continue to rely more heavily on technology in our daily lives, it is important to understand how it is shaping our perception of time and to consider the implications of these changes for our well-being and sense of fulfilment. By exploring the role of technology in shaping our relationship with time, we can gain a deeper understanding of how it is transforming our lives and begin to develop strategies for managing our time effectively in a rapidly changing world.

Acceleration of time

Technology not only increases the speed of doing regular activities but also made communication and accessing information in a much faster and more efficient way. Within minutes or even seconds, we can perform various activities right from sending mail, solving scientific problems, transferring money, and writing codes, to ordering groceries. The rise of on-demand services, such as streaming media and online shopping, has made it possible to access products and services instantly, further accelerating the pace of modern life. This acceleration in time causes us a sense of urgency and pressure that makes us feel that time is moving faster. For example, after scrolling through a website for ordering groceries, we perceive time is moving faster. It doesn’t end there we keep on checking our mobile for updates on the order we placed, which gives us a sense of urgency here. Also creating a sense of impatience and entitlement, leading us to expect instant gratification in all aspects of our lives. It makes us believe that we can never take a break from getting a stream of information.

Changing working patterns

The emergence of the gig economy and remote work has also changed the way many people structure their lives and manage their time. While these developments can offer greater flexibility and autonomy in the work environment. Most jobs are now remote and tools like calendars and scheduling apps have made it easier to manage our time. So, we keep on engaging ourselves frequently in work which keeps us away from our time, and creates uncertainty between our personal and professional life. Even if we are working in an office environment technology keeps us engaged even during office hours through instant chats and emails. This leads to constant connectivity and pressure to be available all the time. This can blur boundaries between work and personal time, making it difficult to switch and relax.

Social media and instant communication

Social media platforms and instant messaging apps have made it possible to communicate with others instantly, regardless of distance or time zone. Though it has many benefits it also creates a sense of pressure. In search of relaxation, we get into social media platforms for some time and we feel it swallowed a lot of time quickly adversely creating more stress. The use of technology for social comparison and self-promotion can also contribute to a sense of time pressure and anxiety, as we may feel like we are falling behind or not measuring up to others in our social network. This can create a sense of competition and urgency that further accelerates the pace of modern life. Even though we try to avoid it we are mostly forced to respond quickly even if it interrupts other tasks. Which in turn makes us restless checking for notifications more frequently.

Memory and attention

Technology can impact our memory and attention span. We mostly rely on technology even for simple information such as the mobile numbers of our family members. Studies suggest that the constant barrage of information and distractions can reduce our ability to focus and remember details. For example, we may find ourselves struggling to remember information that we read online. The ease of access to data gives us the thought that it can be retrieved at any moment. So we put less effort into concentrating and remembering things. We are unable to be attentive for a long time without checking our mobiles. This can lead to a sense of time passing quickly, as we may not be fully present at the moment or able to remember details about our experiences. The automation of many tasks through technology has freed up time for people to engage in other activities. However, this has also led to a perception that time must be filled with activity and productivity, making it difficult to simply relax and enjoy leisure time.

Perception of time as a commodity

Technology has enabled us to be more productive and efficient, which can create a perception of time as a commodity to be used and traded. The focus on productivity and efficiency that technology promotes can lead to a sense of pressure to maximize output and always be on the go. This can make it difficult to slow down and enjoy the present moment, as we may feel like we need to constantly be working and producing. The use of technology for time-tracking and productivity monitoring can contribute to a sense of constant evaluation and pressure to optimize our time usage. This can create a perception that time is a finite resource that must be carefully managed and optimized at all times.

Augmented and virtual reality

Technologies such as augmented and virtual reality can alter our perception of time and space, creating new ways of experiencing the world and changing our relationship with time. For example, virtual reality can make it possible to experience events in a completely immersive way. The omnipresence of digital devices and screens can also contribute to a sense of detachment from the physical world and a blurring of the boundaries between different contexts and environments. This can make it difficult to fully engage with the present moment and can contribute to a sense of time passing quickly or a feeling like it is slipping away. Thus, makes us difficult to distinguish real-time and virtual time, creating new ways of understanding and experiencing the world.

Conclusion

Overall, technology has had a profound impact on the way we perceive and experience time, shaping our sense of urgency, productivity, and connectivity, and blurring the boundaries between different contexts and environments. While these developments offer many benefits and opportunities, they also present new challenges and complexities that require ongoing reflection and adaptation. Technology has the potential to enhance our lives and make tasks easier and more efficient, it is important to remain mindful of its impact on our sense of time and to find ways to create balance and boundaries that support our wellbeing and productivity. It will be interesting to see how technology continues to evolve and shape our perception of time in the future.
