“Friendship - an ephemeral connection one cannot define. It is like a perfume, sometimes it stays and sometimes it doesn’t.”
Friendship is built on simple things like mutual trust, shared laughter, shared cries and the joy derived from spending time together. The authenticity and genuine connection and the simplicity are what make friendship enduring and also make the bond strong. The path of friendship comes with its challenges. It can never be a smooth ride. The first challenge is Communication which is also the cornerstone of friendship. Although there are misunderstandings, disagreements and people struggle to express their feelings. It can also sometimes lead to confusion, emotional distance and resentment. Second is the different paths and priorities as we evolve the paths and priorities of each individual differ and thus one faces simplicity of shared interests and common goals start differentiating. This phase includes conflicting commitments, career pursuits and family responsibilities. The third challenge all of us encounter in friendship is the element of trust that many times can be fragile. This includes broken promises, unmet expectations and betrayals and rebuilding trust not only requires a lot of time but also a lot of effort and commitment and it is one of the tests of resilience of friendships.
Moving on further, conflict and disagreements are a natural part of any kind of relationship. This includes conflicting opinions, leading to arguments if not handled properly and it requires open communication, empathy and willingness from each person to resolve conflicts. Another challenge is time and distance, it can also hinder friendship as life always keeps introducing new responsibilities and because of geographic separation, friendships face the challenge of maintaining the same level of closeness and the effort required to bridge the gap can be a good test.
In addition to the previously mentioned challenges other complex challenges include life transitions such as career change, marriage and parenthood and it might change the dynamics of friendship. During these phases, resilient friendship embraces the adaptability required during these transitions and also ensures the connection remains strong despite these external changes. Jealousy and envy also unfortunately strain the friendship. One friend might feel overshadowed and threatened by the achievements of others. And this be removed through a good environment where each friend’s success is seen as celebrated instead of thinking of it as a competition.
Other external influences include social expectations, the influence of friendship and family pressures. Therefore, it is crucial to set clear boundaries and cultivate an environment where the bond can thrive authentically. Another thing that strains the friendship is comparison. One comparison revolves around the lifestyle leading to feelings of inadequacy and judgment. It includes the choice of career path; and different arrangements and it introduces tension and complexity into the friendship. Moreover, personal achievements and milestones start becoming a source of completion’ this unspoken comparison may create an environment where individuals feel the need to constantly measure up to the standards set by their friends.
Another comparison that happens is appearance it can at times relate clothing choices to physical fitness or self-image and this type has always been fueled by social expectations and external influences an adds a layer of insecurity and self-consciousness into the relationships. The comparison can lead to feelings of isolation and inadequacy.
These challenges can be overcome easily through acceptance and non-judgment and friends who acknowledge each other journey’s, unique choices and are valued and have open conversations about insecurity and concern making their friendship thrive for longer.
Amidst the above-mentioned challenges being a loyal friend is one of the best stabilizing forces. Loyalty is what fortifies friendships, and helps one endure the steadfast support when required, especially when faced with uncertainty and personal challenges.
