Ironically, I will not waste time here and say, not all have the ability to master this art but also, it’s not as rare as we might be led to believe. ‘Wasting time’ has a huge unofficial brand of shame associated with it, whether it is more than average breaks at workspaces or when we are home sitting by ourselves, we feel guilty of wasting time even when there is no one to call us out.
Sometimes, not being able to sleep while laying down on bed is called wasting time and undiagnosed insomnia or anxiety or both, cry in the corner. As toddlers are taught to compete and not just have fun with their bicycles or newly learned ability to walk, it’s difficult to escape this overly dramatic and overly competitive society as an adult.
Being an adult, we are part of the competition and organisers at the same time and again, it’s difficult to escape this system when we barely know anything outside of it. So, the least we can do is, give ourselves a break which is then called wasting time. Is it so bad though? If I am too anxious to sit and work on my laptop so I am pacing through my room, it can't be called wasting time. If you read distressing news and had to take a minute while you could be doing something productive, that’s not wasting time. Someone has to spend time with people they don’t want to so they spend extra time in the bathroom, scrolling pages they have never been on before and will never go to after this. That’s not wasting time.
A world run on capitalistic rage where people often forget to regard each other as fellow humans, it’s necessary we take as much time as we need. Time passed and cannot come back. We know it can’t, but who cares? Everyone doesn’t live on the same timeline. We don’t need to be in the same place as others and even when we live unsatisfied life, we are already doing more than we can.
We are waking up every day, doing what we can to get through only to go back to sleep every night and it is good enough. I am sure you all have also heard, our life should be worth living, and make a difference in this world. No, you are here to have fun, be embarrassing, and very humanly childish.
Politicians responsible for human rights violations and corruption are celebrated here, I am just sitting on my couch appreciating the beauty of my coffee table, zoned out with Television running in the background. I don’t need to feel bad for that. Not to mention, therapy cost more than what I’d have earned if I worked overtime. Doesn’t matter if we are better or worse off than someone else, we are all running on a ventilator, trying to make a living, struggling, throwing a fit but breathing. So, let's just be nice to ourselves and our collective wasted time. It was not wasted, it helped you survive.
