In the quiet village of Hari village, nestled in the embrace of Lower Subansiri District, Arunachal Pradesh, a remarkable soul was born on the first of February, 1934. His name was Tasso Grayu, a name that would soon become synonymous with perseverance and determination.
Tassso Grayu’s journey began under the watchful eyes of his late parents, Tasso Tangu and Habung Yallu Tasso. As a young boy, his curiosity ignited a passion for education. In the year 1955, he took his first steps into the world of learning at the Lazi-Bogya Reru school, now fondly known as Bulla School.
His academic journey continued as he traversed the corridors of knowledge at Lazi-Bogya school until the completion of class three. seeking further enlightenment, he embarked on a new chapter at Hari Byara school, where he completed his primary education in the year 1960. the desire for knowledge burned within him, leading him to Suluya ME School Ziro for his high school education.
In the year 1961, Grayu’s determination led him to brave the challenges of the class five examinations. The subsequent year saw him facing the metric exams, though he was compelled to discontinue after completing only two subjects, English and mathematics. Despite the challenges he encountered, he soldiered on, achieving his matriculation from Khonsa High School in 1967.
Life was not without its struggle for Tasso Grayu, a single-parent child who understood the weight of responsibility. Many of his classmates expressed their concern for his situation, yet his determination remained unshaken. He harbored a silent ambition to further his education, even if it meant finding ways to support himself during breaks.
Driven by his dreams, Grayu journeyed to Tezpur, where destiny led him to the office of the then-development commissioner, K.A.A Raja. There, he donned the mantle of a contingency staff member, laboring for three months and earning a sum of Rs.900/- a significant wage in those days. His heart swelled with pride at his accomplishments, though the path was not without obstacles.
With college admissions on his mind and the weight of financial constraint looming, Grayu found himself at a crossroads. In order to secure an education, he made the brave decision to take a loan of three hundred rupees at a ten percent interest rate - a choice that underlined his unwavering commitment to his aspirations.
In the pivotal moment when Tasso Grayu sought his mother's blessings for his pursuit of higher education, he was met with a heartrending scene. With tears in her eyes, she handed him a mere ten rupees - a gesture that spoke volumes of her inner struggle and sorrow at being unable to provide more. Despite the pain he sensed in her, Grayu remained steadfast in his determination.
In the year 1967, he ventured into the realm of higher education, joining Jawaharlal Nehru College for pre - university studies. The echoes of his ambition resonated within the college walls, where the former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Gegong Apang, was in his final year. Within this academic haven, Grayu immersed himself in a whirlwind of co-curricular events, and more. His dedication and leadership skills earned him the position of Assistant General Secretary of the Student Organization. He also shouldered responsibilities as a hostel monitor and prefect.
Despite his financial struggles, he carried his aspirations on his shoulders. The completion of his pre-university exams proved elusive due to financial constraints, yet this setback did not deter his ambitions. Fueled by his resolute spirit, he embarked on a journey to find his footing. His quest led him to apply for positions such as announcer, editor, and translator at All India Radio Dibrugarh. An interview took him to Shillong, where he was faced with the reality that fellow candidates were seemingly more qualified. His modest expectations yielded unexpected results; he secured a position at AIR, a turning point that paved the way for his career.
With determination as his compass, Grayu simultaneously balanced work and education. He pursued pre-university studies and embarked on his journey toward graduation at DHS Kanoi College in Assam. His college days bore witness to his prowess as a young debater, a speaker whose words held the power to captivate. He clinched victory in debate and extemporaneous speech competitions, earning him the distinction of being a distinguished debater.
Life ebb and flow brought its challenges, as in 1973, when his mother’s illness took center stage. He set aside his final exams to care for her, dedicating three months to her well-being and the rituals that followed her passing. The following year, in 1974, he earned his graduation, a testament to his unwavering dedication.
With the spirit of a seeker, Grayu’s journey took a new direction as he applied for the position of Program Executive Officer at AIR, a role that required an interview in Delhi in 1975. his success in the interview led to his appointment under the union public service commission (UPSC), a position that would have marked a milestone in his professional journey. However, fate had other plans. Fueled by his spirit of state politics, he made the monumental decision to return home, taking a path less traveled.
Tasso Grayu’s leadership in party politics is a shining example of unwavering dedication. His loyalty to the Congress party throughout his political career is commendable. In an article from the Arunachal Times by Dr. Nani Bath and Nyajum Lollen in 2010, his steadfastness is highlighted: “Grayu is the only political leader in the state who has remained loyal to the congress party throughout his political career.” despite challenges, Tasso Grayu’s commitment never wavered.
Tasso Grayu’s journey wasn’t without hurdles. He faced setbacks, like not being elected as an MLA in his first attempt. Additionally, factional political dynamics and kin-based influences posed challenges, altering his election strategy. He recognized the significance of social connections in elections, showcasing his astute understanding of Arunachal’s political landscape. Although, his contributions to the Congress party were vast, serving in numerous roles including vice president, general secretary, and chairman of disciplinary action and press committee. His dedication extended to local politics as well, where secured victory as vice-president of Ziro - 1 Anchal Samity Constituency in 1989.
Grayu’s role as a social activist reflects his commitment to inclusive development. He advocated for the betterment of all, standing against the traditional practices of “YALU-LISU”, which involves the mass slaughter of the Mithuns to settle disputes. His critique of this practice showcased his progressive mindset and concern for ethical approaches to conflict resolution.
Tasso Grayu’s impact extended beyond politics into media. He was a trailblazer, contributing to various aspects of the media landscape. His work in radio as an announcer, translator, and editor demonstrated his versatility. Notably, he co-founded the state’s daily newspaper, ‘The Arunachal Times’, in 1984. this endeavor, undertaken in partnership with Shri V.K Nath, aimed to fill the need for a daily newspaper in the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. The initiative showcased Grayu ‘s visionary leadership and his understanding of the importance of a vibrant media presence in shaping public discourse.
Grayu has a strong sense of responsibility towards his society and people. His involvement in the traditional ritual services including himself as NYIBU elucidated his strong sense of responsibility. He thinks that when society needs guidance for the continuity of certain invaluable traditions and customary practices, it is the responsibility of every elderly member to extend guidance and services. Grayu’s perspective on his role in society reflects his sense of responsibility and readiness to guide and lead, despite his advancing years. Recognizing his proficiency in ritual knowledge, art, and oral history, he willingly embraced the role of an institutional religious functionary, becoming a NYIBU. In his later years, he was dedicated to providing spiritual guidance to the community. For him being a NYIBU is a form of service, as he presides over traditional rituals and ceremonies, imparting his wisdom and contributing to the well-being of his people. The choice speaks volumes about Grayu’s multifaceted and compassionate character, as he continues to serve his community in a meaningful and spiritual capacity.
In the heart-wrenching turn of fate, the vibrant spirit of Tasso Grayu, a prominent social activist and esteemed political leader within the Apatani Community, was tragically extinguished. His life, filled with an unwavering dedication to his people, was abruptly cut short on the 22nd of March when he fell victim to a brutal act, stabbed in his prime at Hari village. Despite a valiant struggle, Tasso Grayu succumbed to his injuries on the 24th of March, 2023. As we reflect on his legacy, let us remember the indomitable passion and commitment he embodied, and honor the profound impact he left on his community and beyond.
