Sada Shakti Sarasane Vala

This is a part of the patriotic Hindi song written by Padma Shri Shyam Lal Gupta, it envisions a victorious India, where the tricolour flag waves proudly over a prosperous and united nation. It inspires a sense of hope and determination among Indians to overcome challenges and achieve greatness.

The sight of our national flag fluttering proudly from every home, a patriotic panorama across the nation, is undoubtedly a stirring image.

The 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, a noble endeavour, ignites a spark of patriotism in our hearts. But is that enough? Does the love for our country truly reside in a flag waving in the wind, or does it run deeper, echoing in the rhythm of our actions?

Beyond the Spectacle

We’ve become accustomed to celebrating our nation’s independence with an enthusiasm that manifests in a burst of colours, patriotic slogans, and grand events.

It's a spectacle, a grand performance, a moment of collective euphoria. Yet, when the music fades and the lights dim, do we truly internalize the spirit of freedom and responsibility that our forefathers fought for?

Or do we slip back into our daily routines, oblivious to the challenges that plague our nation?

True Patriotism: Action speaks louder than Words

Patriotism, in its truest form, is not about superficial displays but a deep-rooted commitment to the well-being of our country and its people.

It’s about translating the pride in our hearts into actions that contribute to a better India. It’s about recognizing that the flag is a symbol, a reminder of our shared heritage, but the real essence of our nation lies in the lives of its people.

Bridging the gap: From Celebration to Contribution

Let's talk about the glaring disparities that exist within our country.

  • India's poverty rate was estimated to be between 4.5% and 5% in 2022-23, indicating approximately 63 to 70 million people living below the poverty line, considering the country's population of around 1.4 billion.
  • India ranks 111th out of 125 countries on the 2023 Global Hunger Index, with a score of 28.7, indicating a serious level of hunger.
  • According to recent estimates, approximately 1.77 million people are homeless in India.

Shocking right?

While we revel in the glory of our achievements, millions of our fellow citizens grapple with poverty, hunger, and lack of basic amenities.

The contrast between the opulent and the deprived is a stark reality that cannot be ignored. Is it not our duty, as patriots, to bridge this gap?

Rethinking Resource Allocation

Instead of spending exorbitant amounts on decorative materials and extravagant events, can we not channel these resources toward creating a more equitable society?

Imagine if the money spent on decorating streets could be used to build schools in remote villages.

Or if the funds allocated for grand stage setups could be diverted to provide healthcare facilities in underserved areas. Wouldn’t that be a more meaningful celebration of our independence?

The Power of Volunteerism

And what about the spirit of volunteerism? Patriotism is not just about loving your country; it’s about actively working towards its betterment.

There are countless ways to contribute – from teaching underprivileged children to cleaning up our surroundings, from donating blood to participating in social welfare programs. Every small act of kindness and service brings us closer to building a stronger nation.

Shifting Focus: From Symbolism to Substance

Let’s shift our focus from mere symbolism to substantive action. Here are some ways we can make a difference:

Responsible Citizenship:

Responsible citizenship involves more than just adhering to laws and regulations. It's about actively contributing to society's growth and development. This includes:

  1. Being informed about current affairs, analyzing information critically, and participating in constructive discussions on national issues.
  2. Contributing to the welfare of the community through volunteering, philanthropy, or supporting social causes.
  3. Using technology responsibly, promoting online safety, and combating misinformation.
  4. Valuing and embracing India's rich cultural tapestry, promoting inclusivity, and working towards a harmonious society.
  5. Continuously seeking knowledge and skills to enhance personal and professional growth.

Sustainable living:

The true test of our patriotism lies in our everyday choices. It’s about being mindful of our consumption patterns, reducing waste, and preserving our environment.

By adopting eco-friendly practices, we can protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for everyone.

Equality and Respect:

It’s about treating everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of caste, religion, or gender.

For example, instead of turning a blind eye to caste-based discrimination in our communities, we can actively work towards breaking down these barriers through education and awareness.

Standing up for What’s Right:

It’s about standing up for what is right, even when difficult. It takes guts to do the right thing, especially when it’s tough. But it’s important to speak out against injustice and help those who need it.

A Lifelong Commitment

Let us not confine our patriotism to a single day or a specific event. Let it be a continuous journey, a lifelong commitment to making India a better place for all.

Let us be the change we wish to see in our country and inspire others through our actions, not just words.

Respecting the Revolutionaries

Our freedom fighters faced unimaginable hardships, sacrificing their lives for a cause they deeply believed in. They endured imprisonment, torture, and even death, all for a better India.

We owe it to them to cherish and protect our independence. Let’s honour their legacy by building a nation they would be proud of.

Beyond the Tricolour: A Call to Action

This Independence Day, let us pledge to go beyond the tricolour. Let us pledge to be true patriots, whose love for the nation is reflected in every deed, every thought, and every action.

Let us create an India where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, where dignity and equality prevail, and where the spirit of freedom is truly alive.

Remember, a nation is not just about its land and resources; it's about its people. And the true strength of a nation lies in the character of its citizens. Let us be the kind of citizens India deserves.

Let us make this Independence Day a turning point, a moment when we collectively decide to transform our patriotism from a fleeting emotion to a lifelong mission.
