Story of Warrior Mother Sita In Adbhutt Ramayna
From the epic Ramayana, Adbhutt Ramayana has been originated. The name itself tells that it is a kind of something unheard story.
Most commonly it is known that the Ramayana is the epic story that consists of Lord Rama and Mother Sita. It’s all about their birth, upbringing & fourteen-year exile to the forest & the great battle between Lord Ramchandra and the ten-headed Ravana when he kidnapped Mother Sita. Even though there are many such things those not revealed in the traditional Ramayana.
The epic Ramayana has many versions & each and every version has a different perspective about the story. Among these versions, one is Adbhut Ramayana in which many strange, mysterious, and fascinating stories are picturised which are not in the knowledge of common people. Lord Sri Rama killed Ravana in battle and after this when he arrived in Ayodhya with all his people a grand reception took place. Ayodhya observed Deepavali & the Ravana slaughter was celebrated & after this, the coronation was done for Lord Sri Rama.
At the end of the grand coronation, Mother Sita smiled when the saints were praising the heroic skills of Lord Rama. There was a deep secret behind her smile. When Lord Rama asked Mother Sita she replied that Ravana’s elder brother is alive with whom he has to fight. Listening to this Sri Rama started the preparation for the battle.
Mother Sita was given the introduction of Ravan’s big brother. She told the name of Ravana’s big brother who is still alive and is known as Sahashranan having one thousand heads. Mother Sita concluded that as long as Sahashranan is alive the victory and this celebration is meaningless. Then Lord Rama ordered his army to battle.
Mother Sita, Vibhisan, Laxman, Bharat, Satrughna & Hanuman all agreed with Lord Sri Rama for the battle. Sahasranan was the ruler of Sahasrakandha. He was more powerful than The Ravana in Lanka. He had one thousand heads. Like the Ravana if one head is cut the other head will grow automatically from the cut section. He was the ruler of Patal means the underworld.
The origin of Adbhut Ramayana is once sage Bhardwaj asked the great sage Valmiki to narrate the secret & the mysterious facts of Ramayana and the result is Advut Ramayana was written by the great sage Valmiki. In the total story of Adbut Ramayana Mother Sita is the focal point more than Lord Sri Rama. Advut Ramayana consists of twenty-seven chapters out of which seven chapters are the great epic Ramayana.
The sage Bharadwaj met the senior most sage Valmiki who was staying on the bank of the river Tamasa and requested him to narrate the secret & mysterious facts which are unknown and undisclosed.
In this way unfolded the great and fascinating amazing “Adbhut Ramayana” which highlights the most wonderful & mysterious kept under wraps. In this Adbhut Ramayana the deeds of Mother Sita the divine consort of Lord Ramchandra. Here is about her divinity and the Lord Rama being enumerated.
The great sage Valmiki unfolded the story of the Advut Ramayana by the request of the sage Bharadwaj.
As requested by the sage Bharwadwaj the great sage Valmiki said ”Oh Bhardwaj have a long happy life as you have reminded me of a unique subject and I bless you from my heart for this reminder.
He told Oh Bharadwaj listen carefully to the great and glorious story of the deeds done by the heir of the Kakutstha lineage in which the fascinating, stupendous, and marvelous deeds executed by Sita who was a visible manifestation of the primary, subtle, ethereal, and eclectic forces & sublime energy of creation which are robust, vigorous & effective or mother nature personified occupying a prominent position.
That secret which is most mysterious and strange but marvelous and fascinating & was still lying concealed among so many other secrets is hidden in the divine abode of Lord Brahma the creator. Sage Valmiki told to Bharadwaj that he will narrate it for the benefit of a favoured and loving disciple like him.
Then the sage Valmiki explained Janki is an image or personification of Prakriti alias nature. She is the primary primordial force present even before the creation of the basic elements of life came into existence. She is endowed with great majestic stupendous and wonderful virtues of powers, strength, potential & prowess. She is an embodiment of the rewards obtained by penance. She embodies success in obtaining heaven. She is majesty, fame, glory, grandeur, renown, success, accomplishment good fortunes, and potentials. Personified & she embodies all of them in herself. She is an embodiment and personified of such excellent virtues as chastity, loyalty, immaculacy, righteousness, probity, propriety, nobility & virtuousness. Those who are expert in the knowledge pertaining to the supreme transcendental Brahma, actually sing Sita’s glories when they explain the concepts of Vidya & Avidya. He also told Sri Rama is a personification of the supreme transcendental and divine light of pure consciousness. He is the truthful and the supreme abode where the soul of all the creatures find solace and succor and final resting place. He is none other than the supreme Lord manifested as a human. Ram Sita Janki and Ram Bhadra there is no distinction between even the minuted and most atomic between them whatsoever.
After the introduction the sage Valmiki said he will describe the reason why the supreme transcendental powers both Ram and Sita had taken birth and assumed a gross body. He who is formless and attributeless had assumed a human form only for the good & welfare of humans on the earth.
Here starts the root of the story of Ramayana as described by the great sage Valmiki.
Trishanku was the king of Ayodhya and his queen was Padmavati who was a great devotee of the Lord Vishnu. Once in dream she saw that Lord Vishnu has given her a divine fruit and she immediately ate it. In this way their son Ambarish was born. After the death of Trishanku his successor Ambarish ascended the throne of Ayodhya. He did a rigid devotion and pleased Lord Vishnu & he gave him certain blessings especially the protection provided by the Lord’s discus against enemies and even the curse of Brahmins. Blessed by Lord Vishnu he came back and ruled over the kingdom with righteousness, possibility and religiousness. His kingdom stretched as far as the land mass extended up to the border of the ocean. People were happy & religious and the king made lots of sacrifices for the benefit of the people.
Once Lord Narayana who had taken the form of Indra said to the king “I am Indra what shall I give you? I’m the lord of the universe & I’m here to protect you.”
But Ambarish being a sincere devotee of the Lord Vishnu saw Indra sitting on his Eirawat elephant. The King said that he has no desire to have anything that Indra wish to give as blessing. And told Indra to go away happily from there. Then the lord laughed and revealed his true identity as Vishnu who held the bow besides holding a discus a mace, a lotus, and a conch in his hands who is the soul of the entire universe.
Looking at the god the king reverentially bowed before him and began to laud and praise him. Then Lord Vishnu asked him you are my devotee tell me about your desire. I shall give you everything that you wish to have.
Hearing that Ambarish said “Let me have constant devotion in you oh my lord. I would look after the earth with diligence and commitment & ensure that it become great devotees of Lord Vishnu.
When the king made the promises then Lord Vishnu answered him “It shall be as you say and your desire will be fulfilled. He said this discus of mine named Sudarshan Chakra which he got as a gracious gift from Lord Shiva and which is as majestic powerful potent influential & effective as the wrath of Shiva himself a unique weapon that will destroy and overcome all your torments and it shall protect you against the curses of sages and saints from all sorts of sorrows miseries, anguish & grief from your enemies other troubles like different diseases and illness that would never afflict you.”
After the blessing Lord Vishnu disappeared from there. Then the king Ambarish cheerfully bowed before Lord Narayana and entered to the divine and glorious city of Ayodhya and began to rule over his kingdom. He ordained that all the classes of society like Brahmins and others should pursue their respective vocations diligently and righteously.
The king was persistently and consistently devoted to Lord Vishnu. He looked his subjects well with special attention for the devotees of Lord Vishnu. He performed a hundred Ashwamedh Yagyas and a hundred Vajpayee Yayas. During that time Lord Hari was established in every household of the city.
In this way, the most glorious and majestic King Ambarish sustained and took care of his kingdom protected by Sudarshan Chakra he took good care of the earth that extended up to the four oceans. And that is the kingdom of Kind Ambarish covered the whole land mass known at that period.
Everything was smoothly moving ahead but destiny had fixed something else in the fate of King Ambarish. Now there is a sudden change in the normal nature of time going ahead. In this junction of time, sage Narada & Parvat arrived at Ayodhyaya the kingdom of Ambarish. They were charmed by the beauty of his marriageable daughter named Srimati. Both Narada and Parvat were eager to marry her.
The king was in a dilemma & utterly stunned and couldn’t decide what to do. Being confused King Ambarish decided to let the girl choose her groom. Both the sages hurried to their patron God Lord Vishnu separately and expressed their wish to marry the same girl. Each of them were competitors in the race to marry princess Srimati and requested Lord Vishnu to make his opponent look like a monkey to defer from selecting him.
Assured by Lord Vishnu that he will do what is good for them they hurriedly refused returned to Ayodhya to take part in the marriage ceremony where the princess would have the freedom to choose her own groom.
The king saw that both the sages have arrived in Ayodhya and had been pleasantly decorated for the occasion from all sides for the royal marriage. The gates and doorways of each household in the city were decorated. Avenues were sprinkled with scented and coloured water & divine fragments and perfumes & variety types of scents were sprayed on the guests who attended the auspicious occasion. And were beautifully decorated with different gems and jewels.
Jewel-studded pillars were adorned with varieties of garlands festoons and other types of hangings. Special seats and mattresses of different qualities and types were spread for all the guests to sit with comfort. A number of kings and other specially invited guests for the auspicious occasion had come and assembled there.
The king entered that August assembly accompanied by his only daughter Srimati who was also beautifully adorned with all possible expensive ornaments.
Srimati resembled the goddess Laxmi with large beautiful eyes she had a very thin waist & she had a charming and enchanting face. The princess was surrounded by her lady friends. Such a glorious and divine maiden Srimati came and stood at the royal court of marriage.
The royal assembly of the prosperous king was bedecked with glittering gems & jewels. The girl sat on a seat with a fragrant garland in her hands and there she resembled the daughter of the king of Gods by the virtue of her divine beauty as well as majestic charm.
At that time the great sage Narad an expert of three legendary Vidyas was elderly and was the most exalted soul who was constantly without break repeating the name of the Lord God and who was the senior most amongst those who were expert in the knowledge pertaining to the supreme Brahm Vidya reached there with his friend sage Parvat.
When the two sages Narad and Paravat went to marry princess Srimati Lord Vishnu appeared there invisibly & sat in between the two sages seems like a human. He was handsome look as sixteen years of age.
The maiden was surprised as well as stunned seeing the monkey-faced Narad and Parvat. She finally offered the garland to Lord Vishnu and married him who was in disguise. The frustrated & disappointed wise sages got embarrassed and peeved as they were denied the opportunity to marry Srimati and felt they were let down by Vishnu. The sages cursed Vishnu that he will be two armed human being in the form he had assumed when he sat in between the two sages. Additionally, they cursed him that he would have to suffer the agony of separation from a woman as the two sages had suffered. Lord Vishnu accepted the curse and in due course of time manifested himself as Sri Ram in the household of one of the descendants of Ambarish named King Dasrath. Lord Vishnu who is the most exalted and supreme Purush and the male aspect of nature called Purushottam took Princess Srimati with him abode in the heaven Vaikunth.
In some ancient time the beautiful lady called Varangana had done some severe meditation for being able to attain nearness to Lord Vishnu.
The two most exalted senior sages exclaimed in disgust, Frustration & embarrassment. They went hurriedly to the abode of Vishnu. Lord Vishnu told Srimati to hide when he saw Narad & Parvat are coming there angrily and they appear to be frustrated. So they could not recognise her as Srimati the lady whom they had wished to marry in their infatuated delusion. Listening to this the great goddess smiled cheerfully and did as asked. The two sages said to Lord Vishnu it is certain that you have tactfully, cunningly, and deceitfully stolen or abducted that lady.
Then Lord Vishnu said that he is bound by the inviolable bonds of endearments and affection for both of you as you are my very sincere devotees & dependent upon me. That is the reason he did this because he is concerned about their welfare always in his mind which is a great concern to him and most importantly. He always told them that he had not done it willingly and to humiliate either of them but have done it for the sake of their good and welfare. He told them also that whatever his devotee asks him & requests him he always give it to him and endeavour to fulfill his desire. Lord Vishnu added that he always hold a discus and have four arms but the sages seen in their midst a man have two arms and held a bow and arrow so Vishnu can not have been there.
Listening to this the two sages bowed before him and said affectionately “Oh Lord of the universe there is no fault on your part in what has happened. So certainly that king Ambarish is mischievous and evil, he must have done some trick and they went away from there.
They went to King Ambarish and vented their wrath and anger at him in the form of curse as they were invited by the king had then in spite of to keep his words given to them in honour the king had cunning mischievously and deceitfully given your daughter Srimati to someone else. Hence you would become ignorant and stupid and will lose the factual awareness of soul on the true self.
Consequent to this wrathful curse by them and inspired by it a dense shadow of darkness appeared there. As soon as the darkness descended and moved towards the king to engulf him from all sides & devour him, the discus which which was preassigned by Narayana with the express mandate of protecting Ambarish from any kind of adverse situation intervened on the behalf to protect the king from the sage curse. When the discus moved towards the darkness that was proceeding swiftly to devour the king in order to cut through it the darkness got terrified and the darkness reverted and pounced back on Narad and Parvat. Seeing that both the horrible darkness and the invincible and unrelenting discus of Lord Vishnu are approaching them the sages ran away from there as fast as they could. They went to the adobe of Lord Vishnu called Vishnu Loka and pleaded him. When the two sages pleaded the four armed Lord Vishnu who is in comprehendible he immediately forbade the discus from proceeding any further with a desire to please and protect his devotees and show mercy to them.
Lord Vishnu said, “The king is my dear and ardent devotee like the both of you so I have to rescue the good of him as much as I am concerned about the welfare of you two”.
Then Lord Vishnu called them near him and spoke with them in a pleasant soothing voice to assure the ruffled ego and to reassure them of his continued blessing and patronage for them. Lord Vishnu told them “Excuse me for what I have said for the purpose of protecting my devotee King Ambarish. It is the fault of this discus that he has been chasing you without any letup but you must understand that it is merely doing its assigned duty besides pious and saintly people are forgiving and tolerant by nature. Then Narad and Parvat realised that it was the delusion &deception caused by the Lord himself. Angered and peeved sages cursed Vishnu wrathfully saying “Oh Vishnu you have deceptive skills so the form you had taken or assumed to do the trick and have deprived us from marrying the girl you will have to take birth in the same form in the same clan of Ambarish whose daughter wished to marry you. You will born in the household of King Dasrath of Ambar ish's successor as his son. And this Srimati will be the daughter of mother earth and King Videha will find her and bring her up as his own daughter. An evil and pervert demon will steal your wife in a similar fashion since you have assumed a different form than your actual self to deceive us and deprive us of the opportunity to marry & staying close to this girl. That demon will also assume a different form than his real one and steal your wife deceitfully using cunning and trick. You will also have to suffer from the agony of being deprived of a lady whom you love so much and wish to be near as we have suffered at present.”
When those sages cursed Vishnu he said sure enough there shall certainly be a most famous, renowned majestic religious, and righteous king named as Dasrath in the clan of the king King Ambarish. He told “I shall manifest myself as his eldest son known as Ram. My right arm shall become Bharat, my left arm would become Satrughan and the legendary Shesnath will manifest himself as Laxman. This way the curse of the sages will not be in vain” Then Lord Vishnu ordered the discus that it should come to him at that time when he will become Ram under the influence of the dark shadow cast upon him by the curse of those two sages. And meanwhile, the discus should go back to King Ambarish to keep protecting him as it had been doing till then.
As soon as he accepted the curse the dark shadow of delusions vanished instantly from there.
Freed from its responsibilities Lord Vishnu’s chakra also reverted back to its original place and went back to its duty To guard King Ambarish.
The two sages regretted for the incident happened and they talked to each other regretfully from today onward till as long as they live they will never accept a girl in their lives. Thus Narad and Parvat went back and sat silently in deep meditation as they used to do before. Meanwhile the King Ambarish as well reigned over his kingdom dutifully and taken good care of his people.
In the appropriate time, King Ambarish went to the abode of Lord Vishnu known as Vishnuloka along with his full associates on Earth.
Wise sage Valmiki told to Bhardwaj the reason behind Sita took birth on earth. In the ancient era called “Treta,” there was a brahmin named Kaushik. The brahmin was very much committed to Lord Vishnu. He used always engrossed in chanting the holy name of the Lord to such an extent that at all times even while eating, sitting, and even at the time of sleeping he dedicated his mind to Lord Vishnu. He repeatedly and incessantly used to sing the magnanimous, generous, and gracious glorious stories pertaining to Lord Vishnu.
He came to the best and most holy places where Lord Vishnu was worshipped & which were the realms of Lord Narayana. He sang there the glories of Vishnu. He roamed from village to village singing the melodious glories of the Lord using the seven notes of Indian classical music. By sincere devotion for the Lord he attained a state known as “Bhakti”.He ate only by begging and lived life like a true renunciate fryer or a mendicant ascetic.
Another Brahmin Padmaksha saw him singing in ecstasy & gave him a lot of food to eat. Kaushik put up at the place of Padmaksha. The latter ate the consecrated food along with others. He spent time joyously singing the glories of the Lord Vishnu full of ecstasy and exhilaration. The householder of Padmaksha used to hear the devotional singing from time to time and one time they turned to the disciple of Kushik. Seven other persons were born in the warrior class, the trading class, and the teacher & wise class families were also inspired by Kaushik’s devotion and they became initiated by him. They also turned to diligent and managed to clean their hearts and became ardent devotees of the Lord Vishnu.
Padmaksha provided them with food along with Kaushik and he remain cheerful & happy always with his new disciples.
In the place of Vishnu where Kaushik lived at that time, there was a mother medicine man known as Vaidya lived who was also an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. He used to light number of lamps in the name of Vishnu and sang the glories of Narayan regularly with devotion, sincerity, and an exhilarated mind. He has a pure and loyal wife Malti. She used to look after the upkeep of the precincts where Lord Vishnu was worshipped and plastered the place daily with a paste made from cow dung. She used to hear the inspiring devotional songs being sung by her husband and lived a cheerful life.
Once fifty Bramins were born at heritages and who kept religious vows came to the devotional place singing devotional songs and glories of Lord Vishnu accompanied by simple musical instruments. Those saints stayed there serving the great soul Kaushik and they intended to acquire the sublime and subtle knowledge about the essential truth and absolute reliability. For that reason, they attentively heard what Kaushik said and preached.
The fame of Kaushik’s devotional singing and erudition spread far and wide. The King of Kalinga heard about it and he issued a royal edict and ordered Kaushik shall sing his laurels and laud his majesty and glory accompanied by his disciples. Also, the Brahmins who lived in heritages must obey his order.
Listening to the King’s order Kaushik tried to explain that he could not even pronounce the word Maharaj great king. What else his voice has no interest in even praising the king of Gods Indra? He told calmly that his tongue can praise no one else except Lord Vishnu. His disciples Vashistha, Gautam, Aruni, Saraswat, Vaishya, Chitramala, and Sishu conveyed what Kaushik said to the king.
Listening to this the king got annoyed and peeved. He asked his royal minstrels & royal bards to sing his glories. He asked in wonderment the reason why those Brahmins can’t listen to his glories being sung if they can hear those of Lord Vishnu.
So on the orders of the king, his minstrels, and bards began to sing and laud his laurels and glories. The Brahmins felt very anguished and tormented at being forced under duress to hear the praise of the king. Hence they closed their ears against those songs lauding the king’s glories. Very annoyed and feeling insulted and embarrassed the king desired to get their ears pierced with iron nails. Aware of the king’s pervert and cruel intentions Kaushik and other sages wondered why the king was so insistent and adamant in getting his own glories sung.
Fearing that the king will use and torture to compel them to sing his glories the sages voluntarily pierced the tips of their tongue so that they will become dumb and cannot be forced by the king to sing his glories. The king lost his patience and was extremely angry and exiled them from his kingdom and forfeited the little property that the sages had. Then the sages moved in the northern direction from there. In due course of time when their end approached the death of God saw them and wondered what he should do with them. Seeing confused and perplexed Brahma the creator told to the Gods at that time that Kaushik and other sages are committed to and are ardent devotees of the Lord Vishnu. So if they have the desire to attain the stature of Gods then go and bring here in Vaikuntha.
On Brahma’s instructions, the Gods took the group to the abode of Brahma in a very short time.
Seeing Kaushik and others arrive in heaven Brahma the creator welcomed them by honoring and worshipping them. Watching all these there was a great turmoil among the Gods as the Gods were absolutely amazed at the show of reverence to humans by none other than the creator himself. Specially since the Gods are known for being over jealous and selfish.
Lord Brahma dispelled the doubts in the mind of the Gods and reassured them. Then taking Kaushik and other sages with him surrounded by the Gods themselves all those devotees of Vasudev went to the abode of Lord Vishnu in the Vishnu Loka.
Lord Vishnu being served by so many great sages like Valmiki, Bhardwaj, Narad& Sankadi, and others who were faultless and sinless sages. Besides them different categories of creatures and all the divine glories, majesties magnificence, and good virtues in creation had assumed divine forms and had also collected around the Lord to serve him.
At that time Lord Brahma came there accompanied with Kaushik and other sages & Gods. He bowed before the Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu saw them arrive and expressed his sincere affection towards Kaushik and his companions. He spoke most affably and affectionately with each of them.
All of them have been devotedly hearing the hymns and songs of the Lord’s glories and have been singing them like expert singers would be named the Lord Vishnu‘s eternal devotees and the Lord will be easily accessible to them & they will also be free to come to him as and when they wish.
After having said this Lord Vishnu addressed Kaushik personally saying “You are the great, wise, and enlightened one and I bless you that you along with your disciples would henceforth be known as ‘Digbal’ magnificence of good virtues in creation.
Lord Vishnu said to Malti and her husband Malav to stay with his wife in a divine form in Lord Vishnu’s abode the Vishnu Loka or Vaikunth and listen to the devotional songs be sung in the honour of Lord Vishnu. As long as this abode lasts they can stay for as long as they wish. Then Lord Vishnu told to Padmaksha that he will be a custodian of the heavenly riches and live there comfortably as long as he wished.
Then finally Lord Vishnu told to Brahma that Kaushik should become the lead singer and let him have a permanent residence in Vaikunth.
Padmaksha is a very fortunate disciple of the great sage of Kaushik and let him become the guardian of wealth and stayed in Vishnuloka.
Having said so Vishnu who is worshipped adored honoured and revered by the universe sat happily and cheerfully on the golden heavenly along with his devotees. He showed great love and affection to them and took care of them with his lotus-like hands which are worthy of being respectfully and reverentially seen and adorned by his devotees.
A music festival was organised by Lord Vishnu in the honour of sage Kaushik and other devotees. Lord Vishnu invited a renowned singer Tumbru by name to sing on the great occasion. A large rush of shuffling crowd of Gods along with heavenly residents came to the venue. In order to restore discipline Lord Vishnu’s guards pushed them out. In the melee and confusion, Laxmi’s maids shoved sage Narad. The sage felt insulted and humiliated and immediately he cursed Laxmi to take birth on the earth from the womb of a demoness and cast out like an unwanted illegitimate child.
After the curse when his anger subsided, Narad was very remorseful and contrite. Lord Vishnu suggested him to go to the owl who was the music teacher for the Gods and learn singing from him if he wished to have the same honour that was shown to Kaushik and the singer Tumbru.
Narad went to the owl by the name of Gaanbandhu residing in the Himalayas where that musician told him about his past life when he was a king and misbehaved with a devotee of Lord Vishnu named Hari Mitra as the latter had violated the king’s mandate that no one should sing devotional song in the honour of Lord Vishnu in his kingdom. As only the sacred hymns of Vedas are meant for honouring the supreme God. The king’s guards had defiled his worship and the result was the king became an owl after His death and was punished to feed upon his own dead body for a long period then become a dog and latter on a human being. In the meantime, Hari Mitra had become a divine resident of the heaven when Hai Mitra found out About the misfortunes that had fallen upon the king and he gracefully blessed him and remitted the punishment that was inflicted upon the latter for insulting and humiliating the former who was a great devotee of the Lord Vishnu. This is the story of the owl who is now an expert musician & Now Laxmi born in earth as a human being.
Now the basic rules to follow if one wishes to be an expert singer after learning the skills and art of singing from the owl known as Gaanbandhu.Sage Narad approached to defeat his arch-rival Tumbru who was honoured by the Lord Vishnu and had provoked anger, jealousy & revenge in him. He saw an excellent sight at Tumru’s place.
Narad saw a huge rush of people with disfigured and mutilated bodies and they were the different notes, modes, and tunes of classical music personified. As asked by him the reason for their deformities they said to him that his mismatched out of tune and out of beat and rhythm of singing has resulted in their miserable condition. Thus free from his false pride of being a good singer good enough to challenge Tumbru. The sage Narad felt depressed. He was disappointed and approached to Lord Vishnu full of dejection.
Then Lord Vishnu advised sage Narad to roam around singing his glories till the time of Lord Krishna’s incarnation When Vishnu as Krishna would fulfill all his desires.
Narad roamed in the world singing the glories of Lord Vishnu on the lute. And finally, Lord Krishna taught him and blessed him. Then Narad duly worshipped Lord Shiva and Sri Krishna who was the Lord of the world. After that, he approached to the abode of Lord Shiva. The great sage Narad who was by now an expert singer and skilled in the science and craft of music & song was accompanied by Rukmini, Satyabhama, Jamvanti, and Lord Krishna himself.
So the great sage Valmiki told to sage Bhardwaj this is the background of Sita’s birth which is fascinating, amazing, and mysterious as well. The great sage said he described it out of affection. It has the potential to destroy all sins, singularly capable of providing welfare and fearlessness to the sacrifice who prays and worship this divine and glorious story and it also provides happiness and joy to Sri Ram and Mother Sita & provides happiness and joy to the Gods.
Now let me talk about Ravana in brief. Ravana the ten-headed king did serve penance and pleased Brahma. As the creator was pleased and asked for a blessing he requested for immortal life. But Brahma expressed his inability to bless him for immortality as pleaded by Ravana. Then he demanded the most absurd blessing that he should die when he asks for sexual favour from his own daughter and armoured with the blessings he empowered and emboldened with having immunity from punishment by Gods.
He overpowered all the gods by imprisoning them and their women associates. One day he went to the forest where the great sages and hermits lived. They glowed with divine and holy life. They emit divine light from their bodies. Ravana thought that if he could conquer them then no one on earth would dare to raise their head against him. Then he didn’t kill them directly but by placing their bodies with his arrow the piercing of the hermits and shedding their blood would be as good as to killing them. Then he collected their blood in a pitcher. When it happened one of the sages named Gritsamad who had a hundred sons and he along with his wife wished to have a daughter and requested Lord Vishnu for a girl child. So he had asked Laxmi should become their child. With his prayer, he sacrificed a little quantity of milk with the tip of grass and chanting mantras, and kept it in a pitcher before going out to take a bath in the forest. Unfortunately for Ravana, this was the same pitcher he used to collect the blood from the sages and hermits. He brought the blood & kept it safely with his wife Mandodai and warned her that the fluid was very dangerous as well as poisonous and the most vicious of poisons.
And when Mandidari saw Ravana’s sexual perversion she decided to kill herself by consuming the liquid poison. But as destiny was empowered milk that was kept by the hermit dissolved with the blood put into it by Ravana. This milk not only neutralized its harmful effects but turned it into an ambrosia of fertility. Thus Mandodari was conceived by consuming the blood mixed with holy milk.
Now she was shocked and out of fear of Ravana, she went to Kurushetra to abort the embryo and buried it in the ground.
In the meantime, King Janak of Mithila decided to perform a religious sacrifice at the site of Kurushetra and he selected the same spot where Mandodari had buried that embryo. King Janak when plunged the field to prepare for the rituals then Sita came out from the earth. The sage King Janak took her in as a daughter and raised her in his household. These are the backgrounds of Ramayana and after the birth of Sri Ram and Mother Sita, they grew up and are described in detail in seven chapters of the great epic Ramayana.
After conquering the demon King Ravana when Sri Ram returns to his Kingdom Ayodhya there was a grand celebration arranged in honour of Sri Ram and all the sages were praising Sri Ram as a great warrior for killing the demon Ravana. Then Sita was smiling. Seeing her smiling Sri Ram asked her the reason for smiling. Then Mother Sita describes the story of the big brother of Ravana having one thousand heads who is still alive to the assembled sages, who gathered in the victory celebration of Sri Ram. This story is named Advut Ramayana.
Mother Sita started the story by saying that this was the incident of her childhood when a Brahmin was on his way to a pilgrim place. During his travels, he came to know about so many things about this world which include the thousand-headed Ravana. The Brahmin told King Janak about the thousand-headed Ravana. King Janak had deputed young Sita to serve the Brahmin. That Brahmin told her about Ravana with thousand heads. This Ravana is the senior one. He was the elder brother of ten-headed Ravana who was the King of Lanka.
The elder Ravana was the king of an island named Pushkar. Sita described the existence of senior Ravana when the sages had assembled in the royal court of Sri Ramchandra to honour him for his victory over the ten-headed Ravana in Lanka they glorified the victory of Sri Ram. Sita told the thousand-headed Ravana as the sages were merely flattering as sweet talking sycophants. Here starts the surprising part of the story of Ramayana which describes the great war between Sri Ram and the elder Ravana the king of Pushkar.
The story of the thousand-headed Ravana was described to sage Agasthya and other senior sages upon their request with the due permission of Sri Ram by Mother Sita.
The story was told to her by that Brahmin.
She told beyond the ocean of curd or buttermilk, scum or spume, and water there is an ocean of sweet water which surrounds the island named as Pushkar Island like a ring or moat girdling it all around. In that island, there is a divine glorious lotus having ten thousand petals those are glowing & radiant alike a flame of filament of great fire burning splendorously. And on this great lotus, there is the exalted seat of the god of creation Brahma. At the centre of that island, there is a mountain named ‘Maryada’ which is regarded as of the same stature as like’Kailash’in Masorovar the abode of Lord Shiva in the Himalayas and covers 10,000 miles.
In all the four directions of that mountain ‘Maryada’ there is the abode of Indra and different Gods. Where the architect God Vishwakarma had created for their residence and entertainment where they can have all the comforts. Sumali who was the best and the most superior amidst the demonace had a daughter Kaikasi. She was the wife of sage Vishrawa and gave birth of two sons both of whom were named Ravana. One had thousand heads and the other had ten heads.
The ten headed Ravana was the younger of the two who lived in Lanka which was constructed by Kuber with the blessing of Lord Shiva.
By the blessings of Bramha, the ten headed Ravana was the ruler of all three worlds with utter contempt. And the senior Ravana with thousand heads made the world weep and wail by his vicious & tyrannical behaviors and took residence in an island or a small continent known as ‘Pushkar’.He was a mighty demon who used to play Sun and Moon a game of soccer Kulachal to play football.
The king of that place is the thousand-headed Ravana who is the great king of demons and conquered the whole world by the strength of his arms. He conquered Indra and other Gods, Kinnars and Gandharvas, etc. When he became too reckless and uncontrollable & started to torment the world with extreme cruelty his grandfather Pulastya and father Visrawa met him and tried to stop him with a polite manner in vain.
Sita continued while living in Janakpuri for four months that Brahmin told her many fascinating and magnificent stories.
Then the guest Brahmin blessed Mother Sita and her father King Janak and left them to visit the pilgrimage to other holy sites.
When Sita snubbed the sages for praising and flattering to Sri Ram’s victory over the ten headed Ravana and told them about that more stronger elder brother of Ravana the thousand-headed Ravana still lives.
Listening to this Sri Ram take this signal as a challenge to the supremacy of Sri Ram gathered his army men monkeys and demons who were the companions of Sugrib and Vibhishan & launched the battle against the thousand-headed Ravana.
As soon as the thousand-headed Ravana heard the war cry been sounded in his kingdom he ordered his demon army to reply to the challenge posed by the invading army of Sri Ram. For this war, Sri Ram invited the divine chariot Pshpak the most amazing chariot of the Gods. Sri Ram associated with his brothers Laxman, Bharat and Satrughana along with his close associates Hanuman, Sugrib and Vibhishan.
By the resonating twang made by the bow of Sri Ram and his thunderous roar the earth and the mountains started shooking & trembling and with effect, the celestial bodies like different planets started cracking resulting splinters and shrapnel from them started falling down on the earth. The strong and brave king of demons also came out of his city chewing and biting his lips in anger and disgust and he was also accompanied by other great demons who were as strong and brave as him. His one thousand faces glowed like all the twelve Adityas singing simultaneously.
He strode on a war chariot which was huge covering an area of eight hundred miles and with the radiance of the Sun. He accumulated varieties of arms and armaments in the chariot.
The thousand-headed Ravana arrived immediately to the place where Sri Ram who holding the bow at the ready was present to confront him. Surrounded by his great brave generals and commanders of Ravana’s army armed themselves to the teeth with a wide range and different varieties of offensive & defensive weapons. They rode on swans, he-goats, buffaloes and on bulls that roared and thundered like angry lions and came out of the city to the war place to confront Sri Ram.
The sons of Ravana were also accompanied by other great senior demons with well-armed and armaments & they together made an assault on Sri Ram.
All the sons of Ravana were very courageous, valiant, strong, powerful, potential, and formidable in the great war. They have immense glory and fame in this respect. Filling all the corners of the ten directions with the fearful tumult created by the clamour of their arms and armaments with the thunder of their chilling lion-like roar the demon army consisted of thousands and millions of such ferocious & fearsome warriors. Those warriors had a myriad of countenance and features, shapes and forms & were of different age groups. They held different types of potent arms and armaments.
They were always invincible even at the hands of Gods in war. They were black-complexioned. Few had faces with no flesh and muscles on them with simply bones in their faces while others had a large back with no abdomen.
Some were haunch-backed, some had thighs, ears, and heads resembling that of an elephant, and some had noses like that of an elephant’s trunk or a tortoise’s snout like that of a jackle or a wolf as well. Having a wide variety of shades of complexions some looked golden while others were as charming as the peacock. Some held a chain trap, a noose, or a sling in their hands while others opened their mouths wide and held sharp battle Pickens in them. They held war maces called club & tomar in their hands besides holding many other types of magnificent potent and fierce arms and armaments. The great demon army looked very ferocious, potent, powerful, majestic and invincible with their formidable weapons. The army had great strength and punch and it was very powerful and potential. It approached with great force and momentum. Its numbers were uncountable. It danced furiously & crazily on the battlefield to the accomplishment of the beating of the war drums and gongs.
Millions of ugly and horrible-looking demon warriors and their commanders and generals were most rude, arrogant, and impolite when they spoke and attacked Sri Ram from all sides shouting, thundering, and yelling loudly, chillingly forward to launch the offensive against Sri Ram who was the caretaker, sustainer, protector & well-wisher of his own clan of Raghu but also that of the demon army. Since Sri Ram is merciful, compassionate, magnanimous, benevolent, and benefactor supreme.
Being of the universe and he has launched this campaign just in order to get rid of fierce and cruel demons who were tormenting other creatures of the world and obviously not the good ones among them is evident from the fact that he had the ten-headed Ravana’s younger brother Vibhishan who was also of the demons race a close associate with Sri Ram.
The thousand-headed Ravana twanged his formidable bow and wondered in amazement. Challenging Sri Ram the demon king asked him about his identity and why had he come for.
Sri Ram also replied hearing this invisible voice from the sky hey the most brave and gallant Ravana “I’m here Sri Ram who has come here”.And then about himself in brief. Listening to this the thousand-headed Ravana became more annoyed and angry as he was before and told beat back and thrash this human enemy and kill him. He has dared to come and fight with me who is the conqueror of the entire world.
Saying this the demon showered various weapons upon Sri Ram like a torrent of arrows that formed a net around him. The Ravana’s most formidable and fierce demon army devouring & globbing up some of the monkeys, bears, and humans and destroying by killing them.
Resulting the attack Sri Ram’s army which consists of humans and monkeys started to crush Ravana’s brave warriors with their own arrows and mountains thrown at them in retaliation.
These two big powers crashed into each other headlong fighting and hitting the opponent to kill one another. The demons along with the monkeys & humans began to fall down in the fierce battle that ensued as they got repeatedly and severely wounded in the attacks.
Observing their army being ruthlessly beaten and getting crushed & falling apart the bravest Sri Ram who was strongest at arms accompanied by Bharat, Laxman, Shatrughan, Hanuman, Sugriv, Jamvat, Naal, Neel & Vibhishan moved forward and started to fight the most formidable and terrible battle. Their exuberant thunderous and chilling war cry & shrill yells made the earth shake and tremble. The sky and the land vibrated producing echos with lion-like roars raised by the demons.
The enemy demon army of thousand-headed Ravana fought with the army of humans, demons, and monkeys the army of Sri Ram.
There was a horrifying clamorous cacophony of sounds made by war elephants, horses, and chariots as well as the clanking of hundreds of bracelets as opponents fought a hand-to-hand duel.
Seeing the powerful force of the demon army the monkeys became very furious and gathered themselves together. They retaliated by pounding the demons with huge trees and boulders.
Few brave demons were on chariots and other warriors were on the backs of war elephants and horses. The monkeys leaped, jumped and skipped obstacles repeatedly to hit them hard on their mounts themselves.
Chariots dashed and crashed against chariots, demons crushed other demons underfoot, and horses trampled upon other horses and reduced them to pulp on the ground.
Attacking each other with a wide assortment and range of pointed rocks, boulders, and mountains resembling large and huge summits of mountains the monkeys and the demons roared at each other like lions and thundered yelling and shrieking violently on the battlefield.
The vicious attack of the monkeys made the demons resemble a hollow quiver from which the protective outer layer of the hide has been sheared off. The result was their blood flowed on the ground like waterfalls cascading down the slopes of huge mountains.
With such a no-holds-barred and horrendous battle raging in which the monkey had an upper hand and were cheerfully gaining ground over the demons while the demons were getting trounced and beaten back, there was great turmoil in the city of the demons.
As the great army of demons was dispersed shattered and battered as they were by the relentless attack of the monkeys the great sage and the ghosts & spirits of the battlefield made a thunderous applause to celebrate the occasion.
This encouraged the monkeys who became excited and exhilarated with ecstasy. They flayed, shook and swayed their arms to joyous abundance, exulting and celebrating the occasion, cheering and roaring thunderously like lions.
This phase of the battle starts with Sri Ram’s army demolished the demon army of Ravana for which the thousand headed Ravana took the lead himself and plunged head in the war . For this, he used a special weapon known as wind weapon which created such a tremendous force of wind pressure that the entire army of Sri Ram was sucked out of the Warfield and thrown away to as far afield places as Ayodhya, Kishkindha, and Lanka from where the Sri Ram’s soldiers had come and landed there in there in dazed and stupefied condition. The stunned soldiers found themselves that they reached to their origin where they came from.
Only Ram & Sita were sitting in their Pushpak chariot and remained in the war place at Pushkar to face the anger of Ravana & his army. Sri Ram was also astonished at this marvelous spectacle and magical feat and prepared himself for a battle to kill Ravana.
At the same time seeing that his massive powers have failed to have their subduing effect on Sri Ram and scaring him into submission, the Ravana became more furious and angry. He took an arrow with special power like modern missile and dashed into the army of Sri Ram just like a fish plunged into the water of the ocean.
Seeing all these the wise erudite great sages were also dumb and perplexed saying “What is happening suddenly?” Inspite of all these confusions great Sita remained quiet and unfazed. She remains calm and prepared and smiled pleasantly as amused by the stoning developments. Seeing that the battlefield resembled the city of Gandharvas and not seeing Sri Ram’s army anywhere the sages and seers were very alarmed and felt extremely frightened. They started chanting the divine holy words invoked to allay bad omens to counter the evil spirits.
The Ravan had laughed aloud tauntingly and scornfully managing to do this stupendous and unprecedented feat very easily with his left hand only without much effort.
All the gods stationed in the heavens who were watching the proceedings of the war most eagerly and anxiously saying let Sri Ram obtain victory over Ravana by our good luck. When Sri Ram saw that Ravana was sneering, jeering and laughing at him Sri Ram decided finally to kill the demon and obtain victory over him without any further delay. Meanwhile, Ravana tried every trick he knew and used every weapon he had in his possession but failed to attack and injure Sri Ram. His failure to wound and subdue Sri Ram resulted in the earth, ocean and planets vibrating and trembling in fear.
Sri Ram became furious with anger finding himself all alone in the battlefield. He started decimating the rest of the demons single-handedly applying all his war expertise. Now Ravana came face to face with Sri Ram and challenged him for a one-to-one dual. The dual was fought in between them ferociously. Lastly, Sri Ram used the invincible arrow created by Lord Bramha which was given to Indra and he passed it to sage Agastya who in turn has given it to Sri Ram to slay the ten headed Ravana in Lanka. But such was the magnificence of Ravana’s potential and strength that he grabbed it playfully with his left hand as if it was an ordinary dirt and not an invincible powerful arrow and he has broken it into two immediately. Seeing this Sri Ram was utterly stunned and dismayed. Now the Ravana furiously approached Sri Ram saying scornfully that he will cut to piece Sri Ram with his sword and will satisfy his soldiers and he also reminded him that he is not the ten headed Ravana whom Sri Ram managed to kill. Saying that by killing the ten headed Ravana the success has gone into your head. He also told for that reason “Unnecessarily you attacked me without any provocation and invited your disastrous end.” Saying this the thousand headed Ravana commenced fighting a fierce & unrelenting duel with Sri Ram. The battle between Sri Ram and the thousand headed Ravana resembles the ferocious duel that took place between Bali and Basav.
Sri Ram and Ravana both were in their respective war chariots. Sri Ram observed that all directions of the sky have been covered by thousands of vicious snakes who were swiftly moving toward him. He immediately invoked the most potent and formidable antidote called Garudastra was shot by Ravana on the battlefield. They started to neutralise and destroy those most ferocious arrows of the enemy which had converted themselves into poisonous snakes.
Observing Sri Ram’s potent and formidable arrows which were golden and magical swiftly countering and decimating his own arrows the demon king Ravana became furious in anger. He showed a heavy torrent of stones, rocks & boulders on Sri Ram once again. The arrows shot by him which rained down upon Sri Ram swiftly started to neutralise and destroy Sri Ram’s arrows. All the Gods Gandharvas were anguished and dismayed at this development.
The ocean boiled and steam came out from it and Ravana leaped up angrily as if attempting to touch the Sun. The stars and planets in the sky felt the effect of the turmoil on the Earth.
After breaking into pieces of Sri Ram’s golden arrow Ravana took a very sharp and potent arrows and the demon then shot it with all the might he had. That arrow slammed into the chest of Sri Ram and pierced through it.
Sri Ram became unconscious and laid absolutely still. At this sight, all the creatures raised a tumultuous cry of alarm and utter dismay and distress. The thousand headed Ravana who was renowned as a vanquisher of his enemies in any battle began dancing ecstatically on the battlefield. Meteors began falling from the sky and all the creatures seems to be that it would be the end of the world.
In this scenario when Sri Ram was mortally wounded & lying unconscious on the chariot Mother Sita revealed her true form as the cosmic power known as “Shakti”in front of which nothing can stand. She assumed an inspiring chillingly ferocious and extremely terrifying form as Mahakali literally the great Goddess of death & destruction and replicated a doomsday scenario on the battlefield.
Observing this pathetic situation and the unconscious condition of Sri Ram the sage Vashistha said to her “Sita if you wouldn’t tell the story of thousand headed Ravana to Sri Ram, this might not happened.”
Hearing these words of astonishment and dismay from the sages and observing that Sri Ram was lying unconscious and finding that the demon king was cheering, jeering, and rejoining loudly at the stupendous feat show easing his matchless and great powers, potentials, strength, valour and punch Sita laughed derisively with a shrill bone-chilling tone and the Goddess abandoned her previous calm.docile and soberness & metamorphosed into a most ferocious female form and Vampire having widely roving eyes in place of her lotus eyes.
Her huge thighs and violent voice it was adorned by a garland of skulls & bracelets of bones it was a colossus and most formidable. It was the swiftest active agile and was very powerful, potent, majestic, and stupendous. She wore ornaments and other decorations on her head that were glowing and dazzling with fiery brightness and radiated the glow resembling a brightly burning fire. She had a long protruding lapping tongue which was moistened with blood and saliva. She had a crown of matted tresses on her head along with large sharp span strong and robust body hair. She held a chained whip in her hands.
She stepped down from the chariot holding a sword and a hollowed out skull in her hands. She hugged forward at the chariot of Ravana in the lightning speed. And like a hawk or falcon bird swooping down on its prey. In less than a fraction of second, she sliced off all the thousand heads of Ravana playfully and magically without the least effort with one single swift swoop of the sword.
She pounced upon other brave demon warriors present there, piercing and lacerating their heads with her nails resulting in those evil and sinful souls tumble down from their mounts like nine pins in the battlefield.
The bodies of some of the demons were shredded and cut into pieces by the violent and swift swinging of her sword. She attacked the demons present on her either sides most viciously.
The most horrifying terribly ferocious mercilessly vicious and extremely dreadful and restless Sita created a doomsay scenario for the demons and began their en-mass annihilation.
Holding some of their hairs she crushed them under her foot on the ground & some others were dragged along with their chariots, horses, elephants and thrown into the ocean to drown. Some were killed by her strangulation. She made a garland of their severed heads and decorated herself with it. She picked up the heads of Ravana lying on the battlefield and decided to play football with those heads on the battlefield.
At that time many horrible-looking and terrifying female spirits of war emerged from her hair on her skin.
They laughed menacingly and derisively in a dreadful and horrifying manner. They came to join her in the game. They were thousands in number and all of them helped Sita to play ball with those thousands of heads lying scattered all around on the slushy battlefield. The shaking and trembling of the earth during that time resembled a boat buffeted and tressed about by the wind on a rough sea. All the mountains and oceans shook and trembled.
The great sage Valmiki told to his disciple sage Bhardwaj that airplanes of Gods started falling down from the sky out of terror and the horses of the Sun chariot went off their path.
When the earth could not bear the burden of Mother Sita as Mahakali and began sinking into the nether world under the pressure of her feet and there was a horrifying cacophony created by her delirious shrill laughter accomplished by the aggressive, stomping and war cries of the mother spirits of war.
Observing the earth shrinking into neither worlds the Gods prayed to the Lord Shiva to intervene. Then Lord Shiva came down to the battlefield himself and placed himself under the feet of Mahakali disguised unconventionally as a dead body and bore the brunt of her force and weight it was only then that the earth became stabilised and stopped subsiding further.
But the worlds above the earth could not become stable. The great dance which was unprecedented most formidable extremely horrifying, bone chilling, and hair raising was the skin dance of death forecasting the destruction of the creation at the time of doomsday. This dance was performed by the daughter of mother earth on the surface of the earth itself.
It initiated terrible awe and compelled the wonder struck exalted sages and the other Gods like Indra to regretfully think that the splitting or breaking apart of the world was imminent.
At the same time, they felt very remorseful and anguished but then decided to praise the stupendous glories the majestic powers the matchless strength, and the unparalleled prowess as well as the cosmic supernatural potentials of Mother Sita who was a manifestation of the divine cosmic force of mother nature called Shakti and was now disguised as Mahakalt in the battlefield of Pushkar in chorus with a loud and raised voice of applause in order to calm her down by lauding her glories in these words “Glory to you blessed be you Oh Maha Shakti the origin of creation.”
Realising that Sita as Mahakali the great Goddess of death and destruction is not somehow calmed down the creation was on the brink of total destruction By her anger& wrath. The creator Lord Brahma led all the Gods in prayer to appease and please her. When she indicated Sri Ram lying unconscious on the chariot and her determination not to spare anything in the universe as revenge & punishment for bringing this disastrous thing to happen. Then the creator of Gods touched Sri Ram and bring him back to life. Regaining consciousness Sri Ram saw Mahakali in her ferocious form and he was extremely terrified at the sight. Then Brahma made him aware of the development that had happened during the time when he had lain unconscious on the chariot. And Sita had avenged his falling down on the battlefield by killing all the demons single handedly. With this instant, Sri Ram felt somehow reassured and regained his composure.
The goddess of the universe who is the loyal wife of the most exalted and excellent member Sri Ram is considered one who is used by his Lord or who serves him here Sita serves Sri Ram in his worldly incarnation as well as in his divine cosmic form where Sita acts as his assistant in carrying out the duty of sustenance and protection while Sri Ram who enhances the glory and fame of Raghu tradition is the one who has the authority over her and is her unquestioned Lord.
Lord Brahma praised Mother Sita “By killing Ravana along with his subordinate & kith and kin you have bestowed happiness and joy to the world. Now why do you act to the contrary and why are you dancing madly in anger with a wish to destroy the universe.”
Listening to these prayers as offered by Brahma to Mother Sita who had large beautiful lotus eyes felt very pleased.
Then Lord Brahma told Sri Ram “You cannot accomplish anything successfully without her help & association or without involving her in your endeavours. It is just to prove the point to you and highlight this irrefutable truth and fact that she has done all this.
Hearing these words of the wise council from Lord Brahma which were pleasing and reassuring for the ears of Sri Ram which were endearing and uplifting for his soul. Sri Ram forsook fears, doubts, confusions, and consternations of all kinds.
Then on being reassured that the horrendous and most terrifying figure that he beholds in front of him on the battlefield and which had sent shivers down his spine cuddling his blood and almost paralysing him into numbness was nobody else other than his own dear wife. Sri Ram looked again at Mother Sita respectfully.
As Sri Ram was assured by the creator Lord Brahma that the ferocious form that she beheld in his front was none other than his wife Sita Sri Ram felt a little comfortable. He slowly opened her eyes and bowed before the Goddess asked her who she was.
Then Sri Ram saw her huge macrocosmic, all-encompassing, colossus and transcendental form as the great cosmic energy. Awed and dumbstruck Sri Ram prayed to the Goddess bringing over with devotion for her divine being using various epithets as her different names which took the form of hymns offered to a deity in its praise and honor as a token of paying obeisance and honour to it as well as to alone and worship it. These hymns present a spectacular canvas of metaphysical as well as spiritual concepts in one place. They are soaked in spiritualism and imbued with metaphysics. These considered one thousand and eight names and this figures the same number is a sacred number. Each of these names describes one or the other glorious virtues & characteristics of the great Goddess. And finally, Sage Valmiki says his disciple Sage Bhardwaj the benefits or rewards of reading, listening, and preaching these divine names or invoking the grace of the great Goddess with the help of these hymns.
It glorifies the Shakti or female power as an aspect of divinity that has enabled Lord Brahma the supreme entity here manifested as Sri Ram who had created this Shakti in the first place, to do what he wishes to do. Without that Shakti Brahma is virtually disabled. Now with the prayer with thousand and eight divine glorious magnificent and marvelous names of the supreme Goddess Sri Ram felt very contended exhilarated and thrilled. He bowed reverentially before Mother Sita with joined hands.
Sri Ram reverentially prayed to Sita using a thousand names and he joined his hands once again in humility and reverence saying “Oh supreme Goddess Mahakali this formidable fierce and stupendously colossus form of yours is scaring me. So please calm down and come back to your original gentle, sober, sweet & pleasing form as Sita in the form which I love and wish to see.” As Sri Ram requested she shed her horrifying form of Mhakali and reverted back to her former self Sita which was charming, gentle, mild and pleasant to behold. Her entire body was decorated with beautiful ornaments. She wore a large garland made of gold. Her lips had a sweet smile on them, they were of glowing red colour. She wore anklets and beautiful clothes. She looked magnificent, glorious, divine and sublime.
The most exalted Sri Ram in her usual form and this caused him to shed all fears of her. He felt very exhilarated and praised the supreme Goddess named Parameswari. He told it is you who has created the entire universe & all the important authorities of this creation from the beginning the chief Gods and the main elements are all established in you. They are protected by you and sustained by you. He said then “Oh Goddess the entire creation finally dissolves in or merges with you at the end. And you are the ultimate end and the supreme nature called Param Pad for all. It is only by your grace & blessing that the Gods enjoy the bliss and happiness that comes with self-realisation and enlightenment. It is you who bestows supreme bliss, beatitude, joy and felicity. You are the one who is known as who has revealed herself as the space of the vast sky which is measureless and without any boundaries or parameters. You are Onkar and it is the most secret and profound you are therefore like it.” Sri Ram said this prayer in honour of the great Goddess and he stood humbly with joint hands by the side of Sita. Hearing this she smiled very pleasantly and graciously and said “Wow listen to what I have to say. Oh emperor this ferocious, formidable, horrifying, and awe-inspiring form that I had assumed to slay Ravana & I shall slay the north of Manasorovar lake with this form on Mount Kailash. Now oh Sri Ram ask any blessing that you wish to have and I shall give it to you.”
Sri Ram asked his counterpart Sita “Oh supreme Goddess Sita the fortunate one you have shown me your supreme transcendental, divine and sublime form as the Lord of all creation. Let this divine & magnificent most remarkable and stupendously marvelous form of yours never leave my heart. Please bless me oh the auspicious one. My brothers, the monkeys, and Vibhisan and all my soldiers, and other chieftains and commanders of army of Ayodhya who have been mortally wounded by Ravana let me meet all of them again.” Valmiki told to Bhardwaj just at that time there was a celebratory noise of the beating of the drums in the sky. Flowers rained down upon Sri Ram and Sita from the heavens as the Gods celebrated the occasion.
Sita said most cheerfully with an exhilarant heart to Sri Ram” Let be so.” Then Sri Ram bid farewell to Brahma and other Gods who were watching the proceedings from the sky and made preparations to go back to his kingdom Ayodhya accompanied by Sita.
At last Sri Ram prepares to return to the city of Ayodhya. Sri Ram got on the Pushpak with Sita and embraced her affectionately. Then headed to his home Ayodhya. Listening to the sound of Puspak in the sky over Ayodhya Bharat & all the other brothers along with the chief warriors who were all anxious and eager to have a divine glimpse of their Lord Sri Ram realised that he has come along with Sita and other sages. They eagerly and spontaneously rushed forward to meet them with tears of joy and pleasure welling up in their eyes. They bowed most reverentially and affectionately before Lord Sri Ram. Then Sri Ram brought along all the monkeys & demons inside his royal palace and described to them the entire episode of how the thousand headed Ravana was killed.
Hearing in detail what had happened they were amazed and hailed the victory paying great tributes to the heroic deed of Sri Ram. And realising the essential divine form of Sita as divine Goddess and that of Sri Ram as Lord Vishnu they thought over this great mistry & discussed it among themselves as they made their way back to their respective destinations.
Lord Sri Ram gave farewell to these great souls with great respect and honour. The sages also honoured & blessed . Lord Sri Ram and Sita with enhanced auspiciousness, fame, glory & welfare and they also went on their way. Sri Ram helped by Sita and his virtuous great brothers made the earth free from any horns in the form of evil demons for the benefit of the Gods and the entire creation.
He performed number of religious sacrifices on the bank of the river Saryu.
This way Lord Sri Ram ruled for a little more than eleven thousand years. This was the story which is at once most astounding and amazing as well as is in accordance with the Vedas that have been described in the episodes or chapters.
Those who read or hear it are able to attain the supreme abode of the transcendental Bramh. This Ramayan is like a gem that was present in the ocean of milk called ‘ Khir Sagar’ represented by Brhmaa’s heart. Then it was transferred to the bosom or heart of great sage Narad & from there came to the heart of the great Sage Valmiki.
The Story of an Unheard Unique Warrior Of Mahabharata
In the great battle of Kurukshetra, the names of Arjuna, Bhishma, Dronachrya, Karna, and Bheem are well-known. But one unique unsung hero is still there whose name is still there and whose name is behind the curtain. The name of that unique unsung hero is Barbarik who was invincible enough to be abetted by Lord Sri Krishna himself.
This Barbarik was the grandson of the remarkable second Pandava Bheem & the son of the titanic Ghatotkoch who was a warrior of half demon and half human nature. The reason is Ghatotkoch’s mother was Hidimba who was a demon and warlock in nature.
Ghatotkotch married to Ahilawati the daughter of Basuki Naag.
So the father of Barbarik was Ghatotkoch and the mother was Ahilawati. The end result Barbarik was a half-human, quarter god, and quarter asura.
Here starts the story of the unsung warrior of Mahabharata the legendary unique hero Barbarik. From childhood, Barbarik was a very courageous warrior. The basic art of warfare was taught to him by his mother Ahilawati.
Ahilawati also known as Mauravi, was a fighting expert. So Barbarik learnt the art of warfare from his mother in his childhood. This is a brief introduction of Barbarik who was a symbol of equality and was bounded by the principle to his fight always for the weaker side. However, he gave his peerless powers he would eventually land up weakening the opposite side. Then he would be abiding by his own principle to switch Over to the opposite side & strengthen the ones whom he had himself weakened.
The oscillation cycle to be continued by him until the lone man standing on the battlefield would be only Barbarik. This is the reason why Barbarik was the mightiest warrior and unsung hero of the famous Kurukshetra battlefield of the great epic Mahabharata behind the curtain. During his childhood only Brbarik pleased Lord Shiva by the virtue of his extreme penance he pleased Lord Shiva who gave him three intaliable arrows known as Teen Baan. Lord of Fire Agnidev gave him a bow which ultimately made him invincible.
Those three arrows work in three steps.
The first arrow would mark all the objects he wanted to be destroyed.
The second arrow would mark the objects he wished to save and the third arrow would destroy all the targets marked by the first arrow even those not marked by the second arrow. He promised to his mother Mauravi that he will fight for the Weaker side always. Mauravi was his first guru who taught him the fighting lessons of warfare.
In the previous birth, Barbarik was a Yaksha who boasted in front of Lord Vishnu that god need not incarnate on earth to kill all evils as he alone can kill them all. Hearing this from the Yaksha Lord Bramha got furious and immediately cursed him that when the time will arrive then Vishnu will definitely kill him first before killing all the evils. That Yaksha took birth as Barbarik.
When Barbarik learns about the Kurukshetra war between Pandavas & Kauravas he wished to witness the war. But before leaving for Kurukshetra he promised his mother Mauravi that if he finds it necessary to fight on the battlefield he would support and fight along with the side which is losing in the war at that point.
Now Lord Krishna was very much worried about how long the battle will proceed. He asked Kauravas first and Bhisma answered that it will take twenty days time, Dronacharya told he can finish all the opponents in twenty-five days & lastly, Karna’s reply was that he would take twenty-four days. Then he asked Arjuna among Pandavas & he said that he will take twenty-eight days to finish the battle alone.
Thus Sri Krishna was very much worried by the replies from the great warriors. He knows as the war will last the loss of life will be more and more.
So when Sri Krishna came to know that Barbarik arrived in Kurukshetra in order to test his strength he introduced him as a Brahmin and appeared before him. Sri Krishna asked Barbarik which he asked all the warriors how much time it would take him to finish the battle alone. Barbarik’s instant reply was one minute only.
Sri Krishna was surprised by the instant reply from Barbarik and asked him how is it possible in one minute only. Then Barbarik told about his secret. He is a bearer of three infallible arrows and his single arrow is more than sufficient to destroy all the opponents.
Then Sri Krishna asked him to describe it in detail.
Barbarik’s reply was the first arrow he use to mark all the things or opponents that he wants to destroy. With the second arrow, he marks all the things he wants to save & finally, the third arrow will destroy everyone that is not marked and then return to his quiver.
Now to test Barbarik’s power as well as to verify that whatever he is saying is true Sri Krishna challenged him to tie all the leaves of the Peepal tree under which he was standing using his arrows.
With closed eyes, Barbarik started meditating to release his first arrow for marking the leaves. In that very moment, Sri Krishna plucks one leaf from the tree and hides it under his foot. The arrow marks all the leaves of the tree but starts hovering over Sri Krishna’s leg. Basudev Krishna was surprised by this behavior of the arrow and asked Barbarik the reason why this happening.
Barbarik answered that there must be a leaf beneath Sri Krishna’s foot and requested him to lift his foot otherwise the arrow will pierce it to mark the feet.
After this test, Sri Krishna realised that Barbarik’s arrows are really infallible.
Sri Krishna thinks of that situation what if Barbarik alongside Kauravas against the Pandavas then in noway Pandavas can Hide from these arrows & defeat is certain for Pandavas.
Then Sri Krishna asked Barbarik from which side he will fight With Kauravas or Pandavas.Barbarik’s reply was he has promised to his mother that he would support and fight along with the side which is losing in the battle at that point. Hence considering the numbers the Pandavas have a comparatively smaller army than that of the Kauravas so he will fight from the Pandavas side as they are relatively a weaker side.
Listening to this Sri Krishna realises that Barbarik does not understand the complexity of his own principle of always fighting for the loser side. To make him understand Sri Krishna told him whichever side you are going to support will win the battle. But the problem is that when you fight on the side of Pandavas then Kauravas will turn to the weaker side. And if you fight for Kauravas the Pandavas side becomes weak. So You have to constantly switch sides to support the other side that has become weaker because of the promise you made to your mother.
This way you will oscillate between both Pandavas and Kauravas & ends up destroying armies on both the sides. In this process none of the sides became victorious you will be the lone survivor of the war.
Now the disgusted Brahmin Sri Krishna sought a charity from Barbarik. And Barbarik promised him to give anything he wants.
Sri Krishna asked for the head of Barbarik.
Now Barbarik was shocked hearing this and found something strange. He asked the Brahmin to reveal his true identity. Now Sri Krishna showed Barbarik his true divine form of Lord Vishnu.
Only two warriors who has seen the divine form of Lord Krishna one Barbarik and the other Arjuna during the Kurukshetra battle itself.
After seeing the divine form Barbairk agreed to give his head to Lord Krishna. Before sacrificing his head he asked Sri Krishna to fulfill his desire of watching the entire battle since he is not able to take part in the battle.
Sri Krishna agreed to Barbarik’s condition. Barbarik cuts his head off and gave it to Lord Krishna. He placed Barbarik’s head on top of a hill from where he could witness the entire battle. At the end of the battle, the Pandavas started arguing that who is the greatest warrior among them & who is the reason for their victory against the Kauravs. Lord Krishna advised the Pandavas to ask the Barbarik’s head who is the best person to judge since he has witnessed the complete war. The Pandavas asked Barbarik’s head about the same & his reply was it was Sri Krishna alone who is responsible for their victory. As his advice, his presence, and his game plan had been very crucial.
And also Barbarik told to the Pandavas that he could see were two things only. One a divine disk(Chakra) spinning all around the battlefield killing all those who were not on the side of justice and righteousness. The other was Goddess Mahakali who spread out her tongue on the battlefield and consumed the sinners as her sacrifice.
The Pandavas then realised that they were just mere instruments to carry out the task to clean up the world from immoral. Lord Vishnu and Goddess Mahamaya are actually the reason for their victory.
The Pandavas after the end of the great battle asked Lord Krishna why he asked for Barbarik’s head? There could have been an alternative way out also. Sri Krishna explained about
Brahma’s curse to Barbirik as in his previous birth he was Yaksha and this story is narrated here in the very beginning.
Obliged by the sacrifice of Barbarik Sri Krishna grants him a blessing that he will be worshipped by the name of Shyam in my form when the Kaliyug arrives and the devotees who will seek your blessing would be granted their wishes.
As a result of Lord Krishna’s blessing we now worship Barbarik in the form of Khatu Shyamji. The famous temple named “Khatu Shyam” is located in the Sikar district of Rajasthan. There is a Shyam pond at a little distance away from the temple where the head of Sri Shyamji had appeared. Many devotees believe that by bathing in that pond the diseases of the body are cured. This is the story of an unsung hero behind the curtain from the great epic Mahabharata.
