Whose woods these are, we knew from the start,
For it was he who caused me to depart.
We parted by the woods on a snowy evening,
Bereft as you promised to meet me by the clearing, falling apart as I watched you leaving.
I thought I saw your horse around here,
On the darkest evening of the year,
Trotting about the frozen lakes- oh what a cruel trick of the fates!
You let me believe you'd truly come- although a bit late, and I'll never forgive you for how long you let me wait.
I watch the woods fill up with snow,
As I wait by the clearing, for a promise from years ago.
I call your name into the wind, begging it to carry the message,
The only other sound here is the sweep of snowflakes.
You said when you grew up, you'd come right back here for me.
Your voice was sure and steady, without a hint of a maybe.
I must confess I took you more seriously
Than you meant to be, and for that, I'm deeply sorry.
Are you still a great rider? A strict rule-abider?
Do you still make two snowmen- you and your lover?
Do you ever wonder about me, and how much I've changed?
Will you be disappointed that the girl who laughed and threw snowballs at your face is long estranged?
I wish I'd stuck around anyhow,
I thought it was just goodbye for now.
Why didn't you tell me back then that I couldn't change the ending?
Give me back my youth, and all the years I wasted waiting!
You said "Love's never lost" but the empty woods say it was
The moment you left me here, hoping we'd make it across
The bridge of timing, for until then you'd keep trying
To return to me as a wiser man. I couldn't tell that you were lying.
The snowfall has ceased and I don't think it queer,
That I still haven't seen you anywhere near.
I've tried to hold on, but it's time to retreat.
I forgive you for everything, but I think our chapter is complete.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I think I will finally go to sleep.
And forget the promises you never meant to keep.
And forget the promises you knew you could never keep.
