The word “appearance” means and indicates “the way that someone or something looks” or “an act of performing or participating in a public event”.

On the other hand “personality” means and indicates “the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character”.

Another definition of personality is – “Personality refers to the enduring characteristics and behavior that comprise a person’s unique adjustment to life, including major traits, interests, drives, values, self-concept, abilities, and emotional patterns”. It helps a person to gain recognition and acceptance from society as well as the people around them. It makes a person disciplined, punctual and counted as an asset to his/her organization.

If observed closely it appears that appearance and personality have a close and undetachable relation. Personality, in one sense, can be assessed by appearance. Appearance is, on the other hand, related to factors like – (1)physical health, (2)facial expression, (3)talking style, (4)dress, (5)walking style, (6) behavior towards strangers, (7)dealing with the so-called unfavorable situations, etc.

For every individual personality according to status is important as it determine the respect of others and social position. One can improve/make his/her appearance more acceptable by following some principles as stated below –

  1. Physical health – One should keep himself physically healthy by following some rules of diet and regimen. Taking of balanced, wholesome,  and homologous diet can keep a person disease-free providing a beautiful look. It is a common psychology that, a person with a beautiful look is respected by others and a good social position is also got by such a person.
  2. Facial expression – The face is considered to be the mirror of the mind. A person with a smiling face is always counted to be of strong personality and expected by all. A frowning face makes the others keep away from him. Hence a smiling face, in any situation, is a well-expected character of an individual to be popular.
  3. Talking style – Soft, parliamentary, meaningful, optimum in quantity speech proves a person to be of strong personality and makes him popular. Saying more than required, using harsh words, self-praising, and unparliamentary talks make a person unexpected.
  4. Dress – Dress can be considered to be another important and unavoidable component of human character. The feeling of an individual on seeing a person dressed in a red dress is different from it is in the situation of seeing a person dressed in a white dress. Sometimes choice of dress can be considered as a determinant of the motive and character of the person. Generally, the trust is – (1) An individual with the yellow dress is a sanyasi (noble, wise man), (2)One with a red dress is of rough and angry character, (3)One with a white dress is a wise and kind man. Accordingly, the dress of the Gods and Goddess are foxed by the Hindu philosophers. Goddess Saraswati and Laxmi are dressed in a white dress to reflect their kindness and the character to give to the others, Durga is dressed in a red dress to mean energy and anger against the anti-social elements. Kali is not giving any dress to mean her extreme anger against the unsocial activists with a strong desire to destroy them. Hence an important piece of advice is given by Indian scholars to dress in white, clean, and well-maintained clothes to be honored in society.
  5. Walking style – Walking style means the speed and stability of the steps. An individual walking with strong speed purposelessly with unstable steps makes himself considered to be one with a weak personality. An elephant is always honoured but a rabbit’s existence in respect of movement is not counted though loved by all. Therefore learn to walk with stability and with optimum speed.
  6. Behavior towards the strangers – When a stranger is met should talk with him with a smiling face, and sweet language, and ask about his/her condition and then the cause of why he came to should be asked. Showing honor and respect to strangers always makes the host more acceptable and popular.
  7. Dealing with unfavorable situations – The extent of patience and stability of an individual is reflected by his /her ability to deal with unfavorable situations. Whatever the situation one should face it with patience, a stable mind, and boldness. Being angry, impatient, intolerable, anxious, and unstable one becomes unable to make the right decision and sometimes may even cause harm to himself and others.
