Siddha medicine refers to measles as a contagious disease. Tamil medical texts refer to this as Mari Noy because sudden blisters appear like raindrops falling on the body. It also has other names like Vysuri, Measles and Plague. It was called pestilence because it attacked people in clusters. When it comes in the first essence (Skin or Plasma) it is called Saramari and when it comes in the second essence (Blood) it is called Rattmari.
According to modern science there are five stages of monkey measles. The disease usually starts on the head or face first. (The rash typically starts on the face before spreading to other parts of the body, including the palms, soles, and mucous membranes)
- Stage 1 - Macules: Flat, red spots appear on the skin.
- Stage 2 - Papules: These spots raise into bumps as the rash progresses.
- Stage 3 - Vesicles: The bumps fill with clear fluid, forming blisters.
- Stage 4 - Pustules: The vesicles become pus-filled, leading to pustules that are firm and painful.
- Stage 5 - Scabs: The pustules dry out, forming scabs that eventually fall off, often leaving scars.
All these symptoms are consistent with Siddha medicine called black scald pox. Agasthya Vaisuri Book - 80 deals well with the different types of measles in humans. Agathiyar says the causes of measles.

Panaimukari, Palammai, Varakuthari, Kollammai, Kalluthari, Kadukammai, Milagammai, Upultari, Karumbanichai, Venthaya Measle and Pasipayiyatammai are mentioned about 11 measles in Agathiyar Vaisuri Book 80.
Measles
