As Ernest Hemingway has put it for first drafts “The first draft of anything is shit”.
First drafts have always been a part of a plan and a lot of experimentation. This is the time when you lay out the foolproof map or plan of your idea onto the page and see what a beautiful mess it is.
The very first time I wrote anything in whole, it was a short film screenplay, it was not just about the things I know, but things I wanted to know, that I am interested in! So, first drafts have a gravity of purpose, which is to fathom yourself, comprehend human nature, the globe, relationships and the variances that make us interminably beguile.
First drafts are a fresh mess, whenever you see at them, you just see, a refreshing pure transaction of you and a blank page of thoughts. They are the original embarkments to an odyssey of rewrites. But you will remember the purpose repeatedly, each time you see that first draft.
Most of the time, before I start writing, I want to know my ending for the story, but most of the time. A few of my good stories have been created while I was writing just organically. Let your mind go wherever it wants to.
You will tell the stories you want to tell in the world you have created, but you have to understand to approach your first draft brick by brick. Brick by brick adds immense details to your work. So almost every day, you have to set a goal for those trivia.
Many times, these drafts give us the chance to explore the territory, that we haven’t scrutinized. Sometimes it will work, if it’s working keep at it, and if it’s not, pivot!
Ask the right question yourself!
The first draft offers you a prospect to honour your reality, you don’t have to compound failure with guilt, because resistance must be your compass. Don’t panic, just ask “How?”
There are billion other ways to write your stories or poems and different methods, but it all comes down to the commitment to complete the draft and never go back until you finish this draft.
Stay honest about your process, it’s all about the process. How does it work?
Write WITH PURPOSE + read WITH FOCUS + build YOUR COMMUNITY
Give priority to your orientation of the structure, character, story, narration, and scenes and own what you write.
The beauty of the first draft is, it doesn’t matter if you are a renowned writer or just starting out, whether it’s your 1st book or 23rd, everyone needs to accept their first draft because that is going to be their plan.
We have a deep desire to share out stories with the world, so let’s start with the first draft.
P.S. This was my first draft.
