Yeah, of course, it’s been more than five years since the film came out but it’s still relevant for several reasons, some say it's because of some scenes where few people opine that it's a great and unique watch. So, let me tell you one thing at first this film is a remake of a Telugu Blockbuster, Arjun Reddy, directed by the same director, Mr. Sandeep Reddy Vanga who made his Bollywood debut through this. It stars Shahid Kapoor who time and again has given a super- solid performance which one can't deny, got a huge relief from kabir Singh as he was having a dry run at the Box Office through films like Rangoon, Batti Gul Meter Chalu and the list goes on, though Padmaavat was a huge hit, most the credits went to the other leads. Kiara Advani also received overnight success through this as "Kabir's Preeti".
Okay, okay before diving into Kabir Singh, let's have a look at its star cast;
Okay, since I’m going to have a brief discussion on it, I’m not revealing much.
At the very first, we get introduced to Dr.Kabir Singh, a genius orthopedic surgeon, but extremely devastated, lives alone in a flat with a lot of bottles of alcohol and a dog named Preeti that he loved more than anything else. But what causes him to be so lost and leaves him in ruins? Also, We get a hint about Kabir’s extreme obsession from her grandmother who reveals that Kabir in his childhood days didn’t drink and eat for two days when his most favourite doll got lost. So what would that child do in his adult days when he would lose his love of life? To get the answer you’ll dive into the world of Kabir Singh.
Okay, the leading man of this film Kabir Singh[played by Shahid Kapoor]has extreme anger issues that he messes everything up whenever he loses his temper. Now he has had a rough brawl against the members of the opposition team in an inter-college football tournament; so now he’s given two choices; either he has to apologize or has to leave the college. But our brave and bold man of the screen chooses to leave although requested to say…he’s about to leave but….
Sparks fly when Kabir spots a new 19-year-old student entering the college on her first day along with the other first year students. As soon as Kabir sees her, he tears up the letter, thus giving up the decision to leave the college. Kabir and his friends warned or you can say that intimidated the whole student body of being away from Preeti as our hero is heads over heels for her and it was his love at sight also. For him, he owns Preeti without even asking what she feels about him. It’s like that his love towards her is directly proportional to that she also loves. Initially timid, both grow an intimate relationship even when Kabir was in Mussoorie for his higher studies. But things overturn when Preeti’s father disapproves of their relationship and gets Preeti married off to someone else which was unbearable for him, Kabir destroys himself through drugs, extreme smoking and all. The film leads to the consequences of the character of Kabir and how things change around him. One person who remains with Kabir through all the bumps and hurdles is his best friend Shiva. As the film progresses, it questions, ”Will Kabir recover? Are his activities justified throughout the film?”
In some scenes, people find it problematic. For example, Kabir is shown having an affair with a glamorous actress or he’s seen a threat to his maid or Kabir kisses her in front of the college without her consent. But as a cine-goer, what I personally feel is that Kabir is a guy who is an obsessive lover, he can go to any extent for the sake of his love or break all the norms without caring the society. You know there is a popular line ‘’EVERYTHING IS FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR’’. This film has taken this line so seriously. It does not make me feel that Kabir is a toxic, misogynistic guy because if he were to be so, he would have molested Preeti just after seeing him in the name of love or he could easily forget or continue having multiple relationships which a toxic, male chauvinist is supposed to do, but he didn’t do this. If you remember the scene it is Preeti who initiates kissing Kabir at the hostel. Though Kabir is presented as a guy with severe anger disorder, he speaks with Preeti with a light and soft tone. And when it comes to the controversial slapping scene, let’s understand this. Kabir politely asks Preeti’s father for her hand twice but it is Preeti’s father who badly insults Kabir which makes him burst into anger and he ends up slapping Preeti while she keeps pestering him to calm down. It’s not the physical abuse, it’s a character’s instantaneous behaviour and the consequence of the scenario. Actually, Preeti’s father has a bad perception regarding him because he at first spots Kabir smoking and considers him disrespectful to others and dysfunctional. Moreover, he catches the two kissing on the roof. Basically, I don’t think this film directly affects our society. You know Kabir Singh is a unique love story, it’s a complete departure from the kind of love stories we’re accustomed to. Kabir is not a typical and all-good lover boy, he is a flawed character. This is the core factor which sets Kabir Singh apart from other romantic films. A director has the right to make or represent an angry character on the screen as a lover. Why should every lover be a good, kind and soft boy? In our society, we need all kinds of films. I don’t think that his activities are justified here, if this were to be so, Kabir would not have gone to the phase of self-destruction. One thing changed my mind is that at the climax When Kabir sees a pregnant Preeti after a long time, unbeknown to him, the child is his, he is ready to accept that unborn child. Which RED FLAG does so in real life? Also, Kabir brutally beats the guy who physically harassed Preeti on the day of Holi. This shows the intensity of Kabir’s love to Preeti. I know violence is violence, it should never be justified but just from the perspective of love, you can say that, yeah, madly in love definitely causes blindness. Yeah, this film does have loopholes like long running length, irrational activities. But this is just a film. It’s a story of a flawed character and not an inspirational character that people should implement. It’s not a director’s responsibility to teach lessons. We audiences, have to remain vigilant about our surroundings. Kabir is a fictional character who is not recommended to follow in real life and the love Kabir has for Preeti is barely found in real life. I’m also the same lady who praises films like Jab We Met or Piku where male characters are soft-hearted.
All the imperfections shown on the screen, seem perfect and justifiable just because of Shahid’s extraordinary performance. The way he surrenders himself to the character will make you root for this flawed man. Time and again he has proved his credibility. Shahid’s incredible performance and improvisation of the problematic and complicated character quashes and converts all the negativities to positivities or optimism. Shahid has done so many romantic films in his career from Jab We Met, Kismat Konnection, Dil Maange More and many more but among them, Kabir Singh is a totally different character. A film like Kabir is probably something which Shahid’s Kismat had been looking for. Though it’s a remake, Kapoor has given a phenomenal performance as Vijay did in the original. Both truly excelled in their spaces but as for Kapoor, the burden was heavier as Vijay has set a certain barrier of expectation, but Shahid always pushes the envelope forward. Kapoor is not new in the genre of complications, he proved so in films like Haider, Kaminey, Badmaash Company. As per Shahid Kapoor’s excellent acting, the numbers collected at the box office, never does justice except Kabir Singh. Kapoor always chooses something unique to showcase on the screen. Kabir Singh is a testament to the same. In terms of screen space, it is only Shahid, it is a complete Shahid Kapoor film.
Kiara Advani has not been given much space as only a few lines are assigned to her. Kiara looks so beautiful throughout the film as she is a glamorous lady. Yeah, Soham Majumder has done a tremendous job as Shiva. He deserves a lot of applause. The music of this film is outstanding from the romantic one Kaise Hua, the rock number Bekhayali or the happy ending song Mere Sohneya, the passionate number Tera Ban Jaunga. Mr. Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s direction is really praiseworthy, it’s truly a matter of huge appreciation how beautifully he made the remake with the same intensity keeping the core idea constant.
So as a cinephile, these are my honest views on Kabir Singh. If you wish to watch a different love story with some relatable problems, you can go for it.
For now, bye guys!
