Anything or nothing? All of you guys must remember the exciting and unconventional party number 'Dhan Te Nan' obviously, this song is from Kaminey.
The underworld, the ambition to become super rich with ill-gotten money, contemporary Maharashtrian politics, speech impairments, unplanned pregnancy, romance, estranged twins and last but can't be the least - the GUITAR, all these elements will take you through a ruthless journey of Indian Cinema. Thanks to Mr.Vishal Bhardwaj, he could think of Shahid Kapoor who at that point of time was confined to the role of a sweet, innocent, chocolate boy who only knows how to woo a lady with his magical dance moves accompanied with his impeccable charm and Shahid pulled off this unique and rare performance with so much smoothness and conviction. Also, the entire cast did a commendable job which makes Kaminey a total worth watching.
The cast of Kaminey consists of more characters but since it's going to be a brief discussion, I skipped naming the rest.
Let's dive into the world of Kaminey...
From the very beginning of the film, we get to see Mumbai, set in a grey template, and Charlie (Shahid Kapoor), a super-cunning, charming, hot guy with his distinguished hairstyle is seen running with horses[a metophor of his ambition to be rich as fast as the speed of horses] and gives us the information about the twin bothers where one is Charlie who lisps 's' with 'f' and the other one is Guddu who stammers but they have now zero connection with each other due to some past conflicts. Charlie, from the railway yard, an aspiring bookie who's now a small-time match fixer[obviously he earns through dishonest way], along with three Bengalee bothers operates this and among the three, whom Charlie considers the closest is Mikhail who is according to Charlie, more than his brother, Guddu. But this cunning Charlie also gets betrayed and loses ₹1,00,000 in a match. The story begins here...
FYI... Charlie with his friends fixes these horse-matches.
Now coming to Guddu, a cute and innocent guy just like his name, thus a complete opposite of Charlie. Guddu also a handsome guy having a dense hair is seen dancing in the song 'FATAK' as he works in an NGO, he's seen distributing Condoms and spreading awareness about AIDS among people but... the sarcasm comes to the show when he is interrupted from dancing by his girlfriend 'Sweety' just to be informed of her pregnancy which happened because of not using any protection!!!
Now coming to Charlie who is desperately in search of the man he got cheated on, finds him by beating the horse rider. Thus Charlie and his friends go to the hotel where Francis....sorry franfif [because as Charlie says mein 'f' ko 'f' bolta hoon] is supposed to stay that night. Franfif, the another match-fixer did double cross with Charlie. Charlie mercilessly beats Franfif to get his money back.
Meanwhile, Guddu is shocked as he's not ready for marriage now but is insisted on getting married to her girlfriend. Guddu, initially unwilling, later agrees to her proposal after knowing that she's the younger sister of a local, influential, politician, Sunil Shekhar Bhope.
In the meantime, while returning from the hotel, Charlie and his friends, during the ensuing fight, mistakenly seize a police van but find a guitar filled with a hundred packets of cocaine which values at lakhs.
Let me take you through the parallel incident which occurred at the same hotel. This guitar was supposed to be delivered to a drug dealer, by the name of, Tashi, who leads a luxurious life abroad, by the two Policemen who in order to execute their job perfectly killed another three drug dealers previously in the same hotel. Now these two inspectors named Lobo and Lele respectively are extremely anxious about the missing guitar.
Charlie at first thinks of leaving this but later his sky-touching ambition leads him to rethink and finally, he decides to sell those with the help of his bestie, Mikhail. Now this is the only way for Charlie to fulfil his dream of becoming a bookie. Now Charlie and Mikhail think of selling those and start dancing to the exhilarating song "Dhan Te Nan" as they are so close to their dream and about to sell those but...
Now, our poor and depressed Guddu is getting ready for his marriage sacrificing all of his dreams but during this time Sweety's elder brother, Bhope, comes to know about the wedding and in the middle of the wedding, Bhope's men gatecrash the wedding, especially after knowing Guddu's real name [Sanjay Kumar Sharma], obviously, the surname is the biggest obstacle for them. An infuriated Sweety chases the men away and plans to leave abroad but Guddu becomes reluctant because he realizes that Sweety was disgusting of her stummerings, Guddu feels ridiculed because previously this kind of incident happened to him as well but according to Sweety, she pretended stuttering just of being close of Guddu.
During this, the policemen are badly searching for Charlie but mistake Guddu with Charlie and take Guddu into custody. Meanwhile Bhope and his men arrive at Charlie's house to in search of Guddu. This is how the plot inextricably intertwines with each other and leads to the ownership of the guitar as after a time all wants to claim the guitar. This story leads us to think about what will happen to that guitar. Will Sweety and Guddu be together? Will Tashi get that guitar? And what about Bhope and the policemen?
Right now I'm not revealing the rest as it's become too much and now if you grow interest, you have to watch this or if you've already watched this, you know the worth of it.
Shahid Kapoor's performance genuinely deserves a lot of admiration. The two characters of Shahid Kapoor are extremely well-written. Charlie's character grew up in a slum but dreams big of becoming a well-established bookie but he needs money. Charlie's cunningness will make you fall in love with Shahid's acting capability. In every scene of Shahid, he excels, although the genre is very very unconventional and so rare. Charlie is witty but he is loyal to his best friend, Charlie's life is also not so smooth. If we blame his character blindly, it will not be fair as his upbringing is the reason. Charlie and Guddu along with their father came to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh to earn a livelihood, his father worked at the railway, and those twins lived their lives quite happily. But one day, [the reason is unknown]their father got accused of theft and to free him from the custody, they needed money which Charlie collected somehow, but it was too late to arrive as their father had attempted suicide by that time, this led to the ever-enmity between the brother and also pushed Charlie to these deceitful jobs. Charlie is aware of reality, he knows how to handle any situation, and he owns the capability to save himself. At the end, upon Guddu's advice, he leaves the path and saves his long-lost brother which you'll understand upon watching the film. Shahid Kapoor, coming out of his comfort zone, portrayed the character of Charlie so convincingly, a grey-to-dark shade, cunning character, with a hidden goodness in him. Charlie's character must be counted as one of the most unique characters of all time. Charlie is one of the most polished and unique characters ever made in Bollywood. In my opinion, this is the first remarkable performance of Kapoor's career. Shahid Kapoor truly deserves a big applause also for getting out of his comfort zone and taking this decision of doing this at an early stage of his career.
Now coming to Guddu, he is innocent, also ambitious but in a different way from Charlie as he dreams of becoming successful through studies. Guddu is educated and a brilliant student. He loves his love of life, Sweety as well as his dreams. Don't get confused with the fact that he is shown a true "sachha" lover. He's represented differently. Yeah, he's looking like a regular chocolate boy by outlook but deep down he's more than this. Shahid nails both characters so efficiently. It does not feel that the same person is playing the polar opposite characters simultaneously.
Also if we talk about the character of Priyanka's character. She's the best at her role. She learnt the Marathi dialect which is truly commendable. Her true and stubborn love towards Guddu is performed efficiently. The portrayal is so nice. The former Miss World truly rocked.
Also, the performances of the other actors such as Amole Gupte as Bhope, Tenzing Nima as Tashi, Chandan Roy Sanya as Mikhail, Hrishikesh Joshi, and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam as Inspector Loo and Lele respectively did a tremendous job.
This Vishal Bhardwaj directorial is quite different from what we are used to seeing in a typical Bollywood film. The template is also grey-shaded, the film is based in the heart of Mumbai after a rainy night, all the happenings just in one day, and the speech-impairment issues between the twins added a special treatment to that film. The song 'Dhan Te Nan; is also unique because it's not the regular party song we see. In this film, you'll be amazed to see how all the characters have to come in one place at the end. Persons who have been away or don't know each other come together. The title "Kaminey" totally does justice with the film as you can see how mean to meanest people can become for accomplishing their purpose. Bhardwaj has always been a fantastic director. Omkara and Maqbool are testament to the same. Kaminey is not exceptional as well. Kaminey's original idea was taken by Bhardwaj while he was in a workshop and later he modified it with Sabrina Dhawan, Abhishek Chaubey and Supratik Sen.It's an entertaining film only when you're able to dive into it and I must say Kaminey can really be tricky for a general audience to set that into their brain after watching once. You can say Bhardwaj has solidly paid a great homage to many old-school international thrillers. But unfortunately, the film couldn't work that well which it deserved because of that Swine-Flu issue but it became a commercial success. Also, Bhardwaj should be appreciated that he understood the true potential of Shahid Kapoor. In one word, Kaminey is a masala film, but not that lock-your-brain-at-home type. The music of Kaminey is itself a masterpiece. If you wanna watch a different and phenomenal thriller, Kaminey is for you.
So, that was it. It's just my feeling as I love movies so much. That's why I expressed my feelings. For now, bye!
