For most of the people, appearing for an interview is a big challenge. Many people lose a god job when they fail to grab the attention of the interviewer and prove himself/herself as the best candidate for the applied job. Facing an interview is also not a kid's play. It requires a lot of preparation and confidence to achieve the target and get the desired dream job.
People take mock interviews, and special coaching classes to enhance their personalities and remove the weaknesses. It is a good thing which really helps the freshers to crack the interviews. I am going to share a very motivational incident of a small-town girl. She did not take any mock interviews or special coaching classes and straightaway applied for the job of Public Relations Officer after passing out a post-graduate degree in Journalism And Mass Communication from a very reputed Punjabi University Patiala. She got the call for an interview within a short span of time. She reached the venue one hour early before the scheduled time which is really good habit of being punctual and disciplined. It also helped her to get comfortable with the surroundings and interact with the appearing candidates. It was very sunny afternoon and the month of June and biting summers. She was full of aspirations, ideas, future plans.
A lot of thoughts were going at the back of her mind as she was on the way to the office for an interview. It was on the fourth floor and a lift was Operational. But she did not wait for the lift to get free instead chose the stairs. She reached the venue half an hour before the scheduled time me. She was asked to wait for her turn meanwhile the interviews of other candidates were in process. She was impressed by the interior of the institute. It was well decorated with posters of famous personalities and quotations.
She quickly took an overview and was confident enough to get this job at any cost. She was not at all nervous but excited. The next candidate was requested to send his resume and wait for ten minutes, a voice doubled her excitement. So now the most awaited moment was just a few minutes away. She also observed that there was not much staff and a well-dressed gentle man came out with a mug on which the logo of IIM Ahmedabad was printed and he himself filled it with water. She greeted him unknowingly and enquired a little about the institute. After some time she was asked to come in with documents for an interview.
There were around five people in the cabin, two ladies and three gents. She felt little awkward as she expected only one person but she took hold of herself and greeted the ladies first and then a gentlemen. She was also bit surprised because the person who was sitting on the big chair was the same one she met outside while drinking water. The first question she was asked to describe herself in ten lines and what do you know about Public relations officers. She described herself very well and gave appropriate answers. It was the just beginning she was under observation very minutely the way of peaking, presentation, and presence of mind overall. Meanwhile another candidate was also called inside and she was asked to write a paragraph on the institute. The CEO offered her his personal brand new diary and also password to Wifi if required but she refused to take any internet help. She was given a deadline of only fifteen minutes.
She did not know much about the institute but she saw a brochure lying on the table... it was regarding the courses offered by the institute. It was like a ray of hope for her and she started writing filled three pages the alarm bell rang to come inside and present to the audience what she had written and she started the first line and succeeded in drawing the attention of the whole staff and when she finished she observed the faces of the audience, they were spell bounded and a pin drop of silence was there in the office which broke with the voice of CEO and this is what I call excellence. There was perfect usage of words presentation, pauses indirect promo of the institute what a brilliant piece of writing. She was a bit happy but also a little worried about what next. He asked her to sit down and called another candidate to interview him and told him to wait for call. Now she was a little taken aback because that candidate was more experienced than her and he was rejected. Many questions were buzzing at the back of her mind meanwhile the interviewer asked her to present one one-minute radio script on the Spot While going through her resume in the achievements section.
She excused Sir, how radio script in just one minute ? as it takes time to think modify, draft etc. Anyway she started speaking and performed well. It was more than a one and half hour and now she was losing her patience. As she was being tested over and over again but not get the conclusion but did not let others to notice that and boosted her morale up. It's now or never. She was asked the last question. Why did you chose journalism and how you can benefit to our institute as the sort of talent you possess its not the right place? She confidently replied that she was born and built up for this profession and just needed one platform and a chance to prove it and i found your institute the best one to offer and I will be the face of your institute to the world and give my fullest for the upliftment and development of our institute.
This last reply of the small-town girl not only provoked the IM Ahmedabad passed out remarkable personality worth mentioning Mr Sushil Arora Branch manager of IIHED Finishing School, Ludhiana who gave a small town girl that is me not only the first job but also the great experiences as well. Although I resigned working for one month but what I learnt from him i am still experimenting with that on my students today and really flying out high with positive outcomes which proves nothing is impossible in life one should have the zeal to do something different and think out of the box.
