The number of crimes against women in India is increasing day by day. Cases of humiliation and molestation of women are being registered every day. According to the NCRB report, every hour, about 51 cases of crimes against women are being registered in India. 4.4 lakh cases were registered in 2022, while in 2023 these cases increased at the rate of 4%.

Now the question is that in a successful and developing country like India, which is presenting the stories of its achievements to the whole world every day. Not only boys but girls are also moving forward in India and making their country proud. From the Olympics to academics, Indian women are raising the flag of their country in every category. Then who is stopping them from moving forward? Who is ignoring all their hard work and wants to see them lose at every step?

Bringing up a few crimes

Female foeticide

Certain segments of the population view girls as a burden on society. They claim that girls are powerless. Conversely, males are viewed as the family's head, primary provider, and lone pillar of support. People turn to female foeticide as a result of this incorrect reasoning. Abortion based on a woman's gender is called female foeticide. The baby is attempted to be killed in the mother's womb as soon as it is discovered that she is a girl. Even though there are strong legal prohibitions against it, people nevertheless carry out illicit foeticide.

Sexual assault:

One of the deadliest crimes against women in our culture is rape. Rape is the term for when men have illicit sex with women, inflict no harm on them, and engage in sexual activity. Women have historically been exploited for a variety of reasons, thus this crime is not new; nonetheless, it is currently rising at an alarming rate.

Acid Attack

Acid attacks are the most heinous and inhumane acts committed against women. Some people have a harsh mentality and attempt to ruin women's beauty, along with that they shatter women's confidence as well as self-belief by throwing acid on their faces. Even though this heinous crime carries a ten-year prison sentence, the number of acid attack cases in the nation is rising quickly.

Domestic violence

Domestic violence is defined as any form of violence committed by a victim's family members. It frequently involves the victim's in-laws, who mistreat women because of their negative outlook. This offence involves abusing women sexually, physically, and mentally.

Women trafficking

These criminals claim that women are worthless in their sight. Girls and women are bought for money, and then they are used for pornography, prostitution, and other forms of sexual exploitation.

Why must women endure such hardships?

Men are the best.

Even in this day and age, when women are dominating every industry and making the nation proud, some people still believe that men are superior. Many families instil the belief that the guy is the head of the household, bears the responsibility for the home, and that the woman should constantly follow him and submit to him in all that they do. This is the reason the man feels a strong need for vengeance and finds it difficult to see himself losing to women in any situation.

Laws failing to act appropriately

Even though there are numerous regulations in place to address crimes against women, the number of these offences is alarmingly rising. The inadequate application of the law is one of the primary causes of this.

Absence of legal expertise

Many people are unaware of the new and harsh legislation that the government has put in place to ensure the safety of women across the nation. As a result, they refuse to use the legal system to prosecute offenders.

Lack of support from society and relatives

Even today there are some elements in society who blame women for everything. According to them, the problems faced by women are because of them. Sometimes they find fault with women's clothes, sometimes with their way of speaking, and sometimes with their way of walking. According to some people, it is even wrong for women to step out of the house. How can a girl living with people of such a mindset be strong and fight?

Economic instability of women:

Women are dependent on men to a great extent in society. Many women in the country are not financially independent. Being financially dependent on someone else, women lack self-confidence and independence. Due to this, many times women lose their self-respect but remain silent and tolerate everything.

Women perceiving themselves as weak:

Prior to the commission of a crime, women are often confronted with a situation where they are unable to utilise their wisdom and strength. Due to societal pressures that make them feel powerless. Consequently, they may view themselves as lacking agency, leading them to seek help from others rather than empowering themselves.

Conclusion

This illustrates that women still face significant challenges. Despite their presence in Parliament and government over the past 75 years of independence, there are still individuals who persist in attempting to undermine women in various spheres. The mindset of these individuals has yet to evolve.
