In 1983, a twist of fate presented me with a formidable challenge immediately after birth. I was diagnosed with Meningomyelocele, a severe and incurable nerve condition that resulted in complete paralysis of my lower limbs. This condition has made a wheelchair and calipers my constant companions for mobility and daily activities. Despite these adversities, I have not allowed them to hinder my pursuit of education or my deep-seated passion for painting and drawing. This is the story of how I have navigated the complexities of life, embracing my challenges and transforming them into opportunities for growth and self-expression.
From a young age, I understood the importance of education. My academic journey is a testament to my resilience and determination. Despite the physical challenges I faced, I excelled in my studies, proving that determination and hard work can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
I triumphed in my Secondary and Higher Secondary Exams, securing first division marks in 2000 and 2002, respectively. These achievements laid a strong foundation for my future academic pursuits. I subsequently earned a First Class B.Com degree in Accountancy in 2006, which was a significant milestone in my academic career. My thirst for knowledge did not stop there. I went on to complete a High Second Class M.A. in History in 2010. Each of these accomplishments was a stepping stone, building my confidence and reinforcing my belief in the power of perseverance.
My artistic journey began at the tender age of nine. Under the tutelage of Shri Prithwis Sikdar, the visionary behind the painting and art coaching school ‘ANUBHAB,’ I began to explore the world of art. Shri Sikdar’s guidance was instrumental in shaping my artistic abilities and nurturing my passion for painting and drawing.
Over time, I honed my skills in oil painting, watercolor drawing, and mixed-media art. Each stroke of the brush and each blend of colors became a means of expressing my innermost thoughts and emotions. Art became a sanctuary, a place where I could transcend my physical limitations and connect with the world on a deeper level.
My artistic talents did not go unnoticed. My work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata, all under the auspices of ANUBHAB. These exhibitions provided a platform for me to share my creations with a wider audience, receiving valuable feedback and encouragement from art enthusiasts and critics alike.
A notable highlight of my artistic career was in 2001 when my creations earned the admiration of the legendary painter M.F. Hussain. His appreciation was a significant validation of my efforts and served as a powerful motivator to continue refining my craft. Esteemed newspapers have also featured critical reviews of my artwork, further establishing my presence in the art community.
In December 2008, I held my first solo exhibition at the Kolkata Information Centre’s Gaganendra Pradarsasala. This exhibition was a milestone in my artistic journey, providing me with the opportunity to showcase my work independently. The positive reviews of my exhibited paintings were published in leading Bengali, Hindi, and English newspapers, and the event was covered by top news channels. This exposure helped to elevate my profile as an artist and opened up new avenues for growth and recognition.
Participation in competitions has been an integral part of my artistic journey. These events provide a platform to test my skills, gain exposure, and receive constructive feedback. I participated in India’s Largest Talent Hunt for Art (Freedom of Expression) and was selected as one of the 75 finalists. This recognition was a testament to my artistic abilities and further fueled my passion for painting.
In 2020, I won the Corona Challenge – Art Competition by Kompete. This competition was particularly significant as it took place during a challenging time globally, and winning it was a source of immense pride and motivation. I also took part in numerous online competitions, including The Social Comments, Art Chitrakala, Kala Spandan’s ‘Rang Tuli ar Mann,’ Chitra Kavya Kalakar, Kidsventure art competition, Chitram Drawing Competition for Annaya Magazine, and Colour Wings International Art Festivals. Each of these experiences has contributed to my growth as an artist, providing me with valuable insights and learning opportunities.
The journey has not been easy. Due to compelling circumstances and extreme hardships, I am unable to travel extensively to participate in all the exhibitions. However, I have adapted to these limitations by relying on online painting exhibitions, artwork, innovative photography, and other digital platforms. These platforms provide me with better learning opportunities and experiences to develop my art skills, enabling me to connect with a global audience and gain exposure to diverse artistic styles and techniques. Additionally, these virtual platforms allow me to engage with fellow artists and art enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community and shared passion.
Despite the challenges, I remain determined to continue growing as an artist. While I have not yet achieved the level of learning, experiences, and interaction with eminent artists in the painting arena that would enhance my knowledge and proficiency, I am confident in my potential. With the blessings of the Almighty and the continued support, patronage, and inspiration from well-wishers, I believe I can make a mark with my talent in the field of painting in the future. My aspirations are fueled by my desire to leave a lasting legacy and inspire others facing similar challenges.
My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief in one’s abilities. Through education and art, I have found ways to transcend my physical limitations and connect with the world in meaningful ways. As I look ahead, I am filled with hope and excitement for what the future holds. With each stroke of the brush and each new achievement, I move closer to my goal of making a lasting impact in the world of art, leaving behind a legacy of perseverance and creativity.
