Definition

According to Keegan (1980), the main element of a definition of distance education is the separation of teacher and learner which distinguishes it from face-to-face(F2F) lecturing.

Distance learning was started in 1840 when Sir Issac Pitman taught shorthand to his students through correspondence. He mailed texts transcribed into shorthand on postcards and received transcription in return from his students for corrections. This was an innovation in Pitman’s system. In 1840, England introduced a scheme of Uniform Postage rates.

The first correspondence school was started in the United States as a society to encourage Studies at home in 1873. In 1894, Wolsey Hall, Oxford was the first distance-learning college in the UK.

Distance Education

It means that the students are not physically present at any learning institute. Nowadays due to the spread of new technological inventions, it has made it very possible for any student to gain knowledge of any subject. Distance education is dependent on television, and video conferencing. In this modern world, we take advantage of newly launched technology for any form of online education. Many universities are providing distance learning education facilities to students worldwide. Distance learning education is an existing place to explore new things, collaborate with others and retain self-discipline.

International Conference

Many conferences are held to make new developments for making distance education more flexible to reach the needy. Distance education has been spread worldwide, due to which all the students avail the facility of the education they require. Many institutes must set up a goal to provide individualized education for students, at low cost, by using a pedagogy of testing, recording classification and differentiation. There must be a new education policy for the open universities to provide more flexibility for the working staff, housewives, and many more.

Open Universities

They play a massive role in enhancing the culture of education in society. The first university was founded in the UK. It provides a platform for an individual to gain knowledge of any particular subject through new technologies and improve distance learning services. Most of the open universities use distance education technologies as delivery methods, they require attendance at some local study unit.

Education during Covid 19

The world went through its bad phase when the Covid pandemic hit the entire planet. Every single meeting was organized through distance mode ie Google Meet, Zoom, and Teams. During this pandemic it was really interpleading the learning technology where a teacher was no longer able to educate in real-time phrase when a survey was done after the end of the pandemic, it was found that students had a harder time producing their own work.

Mode of Communication.

In the older days, the mode of communication was radio and television. In the early 1920s radio was used as the mode of distance learning. The government at that time implemented a program of distance learning that provided the city’s elementary school students with the instructor provided on the radio. This made a great impact on the education system and boosted the knowledge of the students.

Conclusion

As distance education is an emerging trend in this century, we must go ahead with new inventions and technology for the upliftment of careers. The future generation of students, doctors, engineers and housewives will be the most benefited group from distance education.
