Abstract: As the digital content expands at a quick pace, India has seen great legal advancements relating to social media and Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms censorship. Where public morality meets digital rights and content regulation, there are significant questions regarding freedom of speech, consumer protection, and ethical dissemination of content. Online content regulation has become a controversial topic as policymakers and digital stakeholders discuss to what extent the content should be regulated and banned. The shifting censorship landscape of India is critically analyzed in this paper through current legislative changes, historic judicial observations, and control mechanisms. It analyzes the dichotomy between the state's attempt to control versus the protection of fundamental rights with regard to using abusive language, age-restricted material, and ethical issues on the internet. The research further discusses the effects of technological revolutions, including AI-based moderation, on censorship itself. The emergence of social media influencers, user-generated content, and autonomous digital journalism has also made the debate between free expression and content moderation even more complicated.

The advent of algorithm-based content filtering through artificial intelligence has introduced a new level to censorship. Whereas AI-based solutions aid in curating offensive content, they do present the pitfalls of biasing, over-filtering, and insufficient human regulation. The paradigm of digital oversight demands a live environment that accepts technology development yet retains constitutional norms.

In the wake of recent events, controversy over India's censorship laws has heightened, fueling public debate over the morality of content regulation. Examples of government interference in online platforms have provoked fears over the abuse of censorship laws to pursue political or ideological agendas. In contrast, international case studies show diverse means of regulating digital content, and these offer insightful lessons for India's developing legal framework. Further, the research investigates the functioning of regulatory authorities, the impact of corporate interests, and the wider implications of censorship on India's digital economy. Finally, finding a balance between regulation and online liberty is still a daunting task. This paper shall analyze possible solutions that can ensure a just and forward-looking online environment, allowing responsible content dissemination without sacrificing free speech and creative expression.

Also, India's censorship policies are quite different from international norms, with democratic nations such as the United States adopting a more liberal strategy, where platforms moderate content without state overlordship, whereas authoritarian nations like China have strict state control and censorship. India's changing strategy, leaning toward more control instead of self-governance, has raised issues regarding whether it is consistent with democratic principles and the deterioration of internet freedom. In response to these issues, specialists call for increased transparency of content control, autonomous control agencies, definite definitions of proscribed content, and a mechanism for judicial review to guard against abuse.
