Artificial Intelligence is the most common term that we come across in everyday life. It is like giving a brain to a computer. In simple words, AI means smart machines that can learn and help us in our daily lives. Just like humans learn from experience, AI learns from data. Data centres are places where many powerful computers and storage devices are kept together. These computers work day and night to store, manage, and process large amounts of data. They also need cooling, electricity, and internet to run properly. Data centres are very important for AI research and development because AI needs a lot of data and very fast computers to learn and improve. A simple laptop or a normal computer cannot handle this heavy work. Data centres help in training big AI models quickly, storing huge data safely, and letting many people work together from different places. So, they are the backbone for AI progress.
The South Korean government is making a large investment to build a world-class AI data centre. This is part of their plan to become a leader in artificial intelligence technology. They are putting a lot of money into creating powerful centres that can store huge amounts of data and run AI programs very fast. These data centres will have many advanced computers and equipment to support AI research and development. The Korean government is investing around 4 trillion Korean won, which is nearly 3 billion US dollars, to build a national AI data centre by 2030. A powerful computer will be built to support intensive research and development strategies. This investment has been supported by both the government as well as private players. It is planned to evolve South Korea into a global AI power hub, which will lead among countries in developing AI technologies. These efforts are taken by the government as part of a very broad strategy to enhance the AI power capabilities of the country, which further includes securing advanced GPUs and establishing regional AI power hubs to integrate the local economies with high technology. The government is highly committed to fostering innovation and enhancing its capabilities to compete in the rapidly growing AI technology.
South Korea is building one of the largest AI centres in Jeollanam-do province, located in the southern part of the country. This centre will become one of the largest AI centres in the world, which will be equipped with a strong power supply to run many AI programs at the same time. It is being developed in collaboration with both private and government entrepreneurs. With an investment of over 35 billion dollars in the project. It will boost the local economy as well as increase the job capabilities for the country. It is decided to use the latest generation technology to build a strong AI powerhouse, which will be able to manage many AI works at the same time and support businesses and research from various parts of the world. Other cities such as Daejeon and Busan are also on their way to being developed into major AI clusters.
The goal is to make Korea an AI-leading nation, and the centre will provide very large data storage, which will help scientists develop new AI tools and applications with evolving time. As the world is more tilted in AI research now, with a major focus on AI smart solutions, Korea will significantly contribute to the research. It has launched the Korea Digital Strategy to make Korea the top 3 AI hub in the world. Policies are being made by the government that will integrate AI with various other sectors to get smart and fast solutions, such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, etc.
The project is also a leap forward to stable the unemployment rate by attracting foreign investments at the same time with world-class AI research facilities, which will not only contribute to the GDP but will also create numerous jobs. The government is also focusing now on training around 50000 AI professionals by 2030 who will work further in AI research and develop the best tools to make life ease and find out fast solutions. These programs are also strongly integrated into many universities' programs now, which will help the students to develop basic knowledge and use of AI in every major or curriculum. Korea is also one of the leading countries that support students with many scholarships to study special AI and software programs with a more research-oriented approach.
The country has also started incorporating AI in society as well such as AI teachers in school, AI-supported medical testing and reports, and AI chatbots in banks and public services, which many countries still lag in. AI-supported surveillance systems are being fitted in cities like Seoul, which helps in crime prevention and public safety concerns. It is also supporting many public services, such as AI apps which help people to predict bus timings, weather forecasts, and ease life decisions. AI voice assistants are one of the best things humans have ever developed, which people can use to share emotions, ask for help anytime & a great support system in life. Starting from children to aged people, the use of AI tools is being deeply integrated into our lives, so that it doesn’t feel unnatural anymore.
At the same time, the government is also focusing on creating AI ethics and responsibility.
