What is Artificial Intelligence: It is the ability of a computer or a robot controlled by a computer to do tasks that are usually done by humans because they require human intelligence and discernment. In 1951 the 1st successful AI program was written by Christopher Strachey who was later the Director of the Programming Research Group at the University of Oxford. However,  if we go to the origin of AI, John McCarthy was considered to be the father of Artificial Intelligence. He coined the term Artificial Intelligence.

YEAR 1943 - 1955

  • In the year 1943 the 1st work as AI was done by Warren McCullouh and Walter Pits who with combined research proposed a model of ARTIFICIAL NEURONS.
  • Donald Hebb demonstrated an updating rule for modifying connection strength between neurons called Hebbian Learning.
  • 1950 Alan Turing an English mathematician, pioneered Machine Learning, a test that can check a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior.

THE BIRTH OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (1952- 1956)

  • Year 1955, Allen Newell & Herbert A Simon created the 1st Artificial intelligence program, “ LOGIC THEORIST “
  • Year 1956, Artificial Intelligence was first adopted by American Computer scientist John Mc Cathy.

INTELLIGENT AGENTS (1993- 2011)

  • Year 1997 IBM Deep Blue Beats world champion in chess Gary Kasparov, the 1st computer to beat a world chess champion.
  • Year 2002 this is for the 1st time ever AI entered our home in the form of Roomba which is a vacuum cleaner.
  • In 2006 introduction of AI in the business world where companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Netflix started using AI.

BIG DATA & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (2011 TO PRESENT)

  • In 2012 Google launched Google Now which is an Android app feature that is able to provide information to users as a prediction.
  • Year 2014 The Chabot Eugene Goostman won a competition in the famous Turing Test.
  • Year 2018 The Project Debater from IBM debated on complex topics with two master debaters and performed brilliantly.

ARTIFICIAL NARROW INTELLIGENCE:

These are AI tools designed to carry out very specific actions and commands, they are basically built to serve and excel in one cognitive capability. It cannot learn skills beyond its design. For example, Natural language processing AI can recognize and respond to voice commands but any action beyond that is not possible.

ARTIFICIAL GENERAL INTELLIGENCE:

Artificial Intelligence can perform a wide range of actions that humans can also do. This mirrors human intelligence by providing scope for autonomous learning. AGI can technically perform any intellectual task which is done by a human.

ARTIFICIAL SUPER INTELLIGENCE:

The future of ASI systems is performance of machines to process huge quantities of data, super fast processing capacity, and super fast rate of intelligent decision-making. This facilitates difficult jobs in less time.

REACTIVE MACHINES:

In the early stages, a form of AI actually helped to start the Revolution of Artificial Intelligence. These are the kind of devices that do not need a memory base to operate, they are equipped to mimic the human mind's ability to operate. Memory-based functions are never executed by those computers. This sort of AI actually replies quickly on a set of standard inputs.

LIMITED MEMORY

SELF AWARE

The stage beyond the  point when artificial intelligence develops self-awareness is called the AI point of singularity. There is a possibility that once the development of AI keeps happening, machines might go beyond our control. Engineers and Researchers have been working on it, however,  its  existence is hypothetical.
