It was Saptami (17 October 2026), the seventh and deeply significant day of Durga Puja, when the evening atmosphere at the Chor Bagan Puja Pandal in North Kolkata began to come alive with anticipation. Around 7:40 PM, visitors were arriving in waves, their enthusiasm palpable as they joined the growing throng. The Chor Bagan Pandal and its beautifully crafted Pratima have captured hearts and gained considerable attention in recent years, drawing devoted pandal enthusiasts from across Kolkata and West Bengal who eagerly participate in this cherished tradition. As the rain began to fall gently, the crowd's anxiety started to build. Then came the tragic moment that would change everything. Someone from the CHOR BAGAN Puja Pandal's organising team made a false, alarming announcement about a fire outbreak, understandably causing panic among the visitors. The situation became dire because the exit was tragically narrow—only three people could leave at a time. With thousands of people desperately trying to escape simultaneously, a devastating stampede unfolded. In this heartbreaking chaos, 19 precious lives were lost, and 25 people were injured and admitted to the hospital. On Sunday, October 18th at 9:46 AM, authorities arrested seven individuals, including the secretary and vice president of Chore Bagan Sarbojonin Durgotsab Samity. Among those taken into custody were Raj Kumar Sewda, recognised as Raja and serving as the committee secretary, along with Shantanu Dubey, who holds the position of vice president. The complete list of arrested individuals includes:
In response to this heartbreaking and unintended tragedy, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand thoughtfully implemented Section 163 of BNSS as a protective measure across select areas of Bowbazaar for three days, spanning October 18 through October 20. Additionally, the Puja Pandals at Chetla Agrani, Tala Prottoy, Alipore Sarbojonin, Ballygunge Sarbojonin, College Square, Mohd Ali Park, and Chaltabagan have been temporarily restricted from public access. Among the 25 individuals affected in this incident, 24 are fortunately in stable condition, though one remains in critical care. Residents who served as first responders have compassionately pointed out that inadequate crowd management contributed significantly to this devastating event. According to a concerned resident, there's a shortage of both police officers and volunteers available to help. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made a compassionate visit to the hospital, where he spent time with the grieving families of those who lost their lives. He expressed his concern about the incident, attributing it to the organisers' lack of care and consideration. He then reached out to puja committee members throughout Kolkata, urging them to ensure their pandals are adequately lit and to implement proper safety precautions to prevent similar tragedies. He also shared that this is an agonising incident that has left many hearts broken. Furthermore, he assured that the incident will receive a comprehensive investigation and all necessary measures will be implemented accordingly. The CHORBAGAN PUJA PANDAL has been transferred to the forensic team, STF, and Fire Brigade for thorough examination. The Chief Minister of West Bengal also announced a compassionate compensation package of 25 lakh rupees to the families of those who have passed away.
PM MODI also conveyed his heartfelt sentiments: "The stampede in Kolkata is deeply troubling. My heart goes out to those grieving the loss of their loved ones. I hope the injured find swift recovery. The local administration is extending all available support to those impacted." The PM further announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakhs each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Union Home Minister AMIT SHAH, who arrived in the city that evening, also offered his sympathies: "I hold in my prayers the souls of those who tragically lost their lives in this sorrowful event and offer my deepest condolences to the grieving families. The administration is working diligently to arrange the finest medical care for the injured. I am setting aside all my planned commitments in West Bengal tomorrow to personally visit and support the injured in the hospital. I humbly pray to Ma Durga for the swift and complete recovery of all those affected."
A large gathering of people crowded onto the narrow RADHA MADHAB SAHA LANE, waiting to enter the pandal. When rainfall began at 7:15 PM, the anxious crowd suddenly pushed forward all at once.
Those already inside the pandal felt the pressure mounting from behind and attempted to move ahead, but found themselves trapped as people near the exit blocked any way out.
A critical mistake occurred when a puja committee member made an alarming announcement suggesting the pandal might collapse, which understandably intensified the panic and confusion.
In the resulting chaos, several people fell down a flight of stairs near the exit and were tragically trampled by the crowd pressing behind them.
A Class 12 student from North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal and a nurse from Hooghly were tragically among those who lost their lives in the stampede. Police officers visited the student's home and spoke compassionately with her family members. The father of the 18-year-old girl received a heartbreaking call from the police asking him to come to Kolkata Medical College. The man, who works as a blouse-cutting artisan, shared his anguish with reporters. His daughter had travelled to Kolkata for the very first time. Another victim, Sriparna Poddar, resided in Baidyabati in Hooghly district. She was employed at Tata Cancer Hospital. According to her mother, she left home for work on Saturday morning and later went to Chorbagan with her friends. Another victim's mother, of 25-year-old Sonu Pal, shared that she witnessed her son's mother pass away right before his eyes. Sonu Pal, a resident of Kumortuli, had gone to see the Puja celebration with his mother when the sudden downpour occurred. Though Sonu miraculously survived, he was unable to save his mother. According to a witness's account, the continuous rainfall was the underlying cause of this incident. The gathering had become quite large, and understandably, the people present were concerned about getting drenched. Another eyewitness, Uttam, who shared that he's a longtime resident of the area, noted that when the incident unfolded, the local community responded with compassion and quickly came to assist those in need.
Continuous Rainfall: The relentless downpour compelled devotees to seek shelter within the Chhoto Bagan Puja pandal. Unfortunately, those already inside were reluctant to leave, and as more people gradually crowded into the limited space, an overwhelming surge began to form. This initial pressure mounted as individuals lost their footing on one another, tragically worsening the situation.
NARROW BYLANE: Footage from the scene reveals that both entry and exit passages are distressingly narrow—a tragedy waiting to unfold. While the pandal opens into a spacious area initially, visitors must eventually navigate through a cramped corridor accommodating only three people at a time. Notably, the VIP entrance is substantially larger than the common entrance. These restrictive entry and exit points, particularly the exit, bear significant responsibility for this heartbreaking stampede and loss of life.
POLICE AND PUJA COMMITTEE MISMANAGEMENT: Eyewitnesses have reported that confusing directives from the Puja committee regarding entry and exit procedures created confusion, leaving the crowd's movement completely disoriented during the critical rush period. Police deployment was insufficient, with most officers stationed near the VIP entrance. This disparity suggests that protecting VIP attendees was prioritised over safeguarding the lives of ordinary citizens.
On October 18th, a Kolkata Police officer unveiled a comprehensive 11-point advisory designed to enhance safety measures during festivities. The key directives include: sealing pandal entry points during rainfall to prevent accidents; maintaining strict post assignments for all officers regardless of weather conditions; restricting VIP vehicle access to pandals by designating remote parking areas; guaranteeing sufficient illumination throughout event venues; actively monitoring announcements made by puja committee organisers; ensuring visitor pathways remain consistent and stable, with each officer coordinating closely with 5-6 puja volunteers at all times; and equipping on-duty personnel with essential emergency management tools, including ropes, guardrails, and portable loudspeakers for rapid response situations.
In a strategic move on Sunday, October 18th, the Government of West Bengal orchestrated the deployment of nine seasoned IPS officers, each boasting extensive expertise in orchestrating Durga Puja crowd management. These accomplished law enforcement professionals were strategically positioned to navigate the surging masses of jubilant celebrants, particularly during the enchanting evening hours when the festival's resplendent illuminations ignite the night sky. The identities of these nine distinguished IPS officers are
Seven individuals arrested today were brought before the local court and remanded to ten days of police custody, as confirmed by Additional Commissioner of Police Kunal Agarwal. The arrested individuals include the Puja committee secretary, vice president, and two employees from a private security firm. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Sunday that the government intends to eliminate the practice of Durga Puja pandals featuring VIP gates and will enforce clearly defined entry and exit points. High-budget, prestigious pandals that currently offer VIP access to elite visitors and celebrity pandal enthusiasts—including renowned Bengali actors and popular content creators—will no longer maintain such exclusive arrangements. The government believes this tragedy could have been prevented had priority and resources been directed toward accommodating the general public, who constitute the vast majority, numbering in the thousands and even hundreds of thousands.
A dedicated high-level committee has been thoughtfully established to carefully review safety arrangements and has begun visiting puja pandals throughout Kolkata. This committee compassionately brings together Disaster Management Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Director General of Fire Services Anuj Sharma. In a related development, Jayanta Banerjee, the former Secretary of the Chorbagan Puja, has respectfully shared his concerns, expressing that relocating the idol's position conflicts with cherished community traditions that have been honoured for generations. Mr Banerjee, who devoted 15 years of dedicated service as the committee's general secretary before his resignation in July, had consistently and thoughtfully advised organisers about the significance of maintaining the idol's original position. According to deeply held community guidelines, it is considered inadvisable to reorient the idol's face in a different direction. Mr Banerjee has reflected on an instance from 2023 when a pillar was relocated, after which several challenging incidents occurred during the pujas, including the heartbreaking loss of his own father. It's important to recognise that these represent meaningful traditional and ritualistic belief systems that form an integral part of the community's cultural heritage, and while this sorrowful experience understandably weighs on those affected, it should be understood separately from the practical considerations surrounding idol repositioning.
When 5-6 people find themselves confined within a single square meter in an overcrowded setting, the crowd's movement mirrors that of a fluid—each person, like individual liquid particles, instinctively pushes toward the same exit point. Though the exit may be modest in size, the entire gathering flows like a river, with everyone focused on that singular narrow passage, desperately trying to move ahead of one another. This is precisely where the tragedy unfolds. With an exit designed to accommodate only 3-4 people, yet 15-20 individuals attempting to push through simultaneously, a devastating stampede becomes inevitable.
The Conclusion: Investigations will undoubtedly follow, and those responsible will face accountability, as the current administration is committed to pursuing this matter thoroughly. Yet the heartbreaking reality remains: 19 innocent lives have been lost—taken simply because they were in the wrong place at an unfortunate moment. VIP culture stands as a fundamental cause of this tragedy, compounded by the inadequate management capabilities of those overseeing the puja committee. A puja is meant to be a joyful celebration, a deeply felt spiritual experience to be cherished together. However, we must recognise that human life holds even greater significance. Fundamental safety awareness and survival consciousness are essential. Ultimately, your own well-being is your personal responsibility, and equally, you carry a responsibility to those you love and your family. During Durga Puja, we warmly greet one another by saying Happy Durga Puja. However, it would be more thoughtful if we extended our wishes to include safety, saying Happy Safe Durga Puja instead. This simple addition reminds us to care not just about the celebration itself, but also about the well-being of everyone around us during these festive gatherings.
