On 3 December, he passed away due to cardiac arrest early in the morning. 1. Lived his life as a Refugee..!

Dharampal Gulati was born in 1923 in Sialkot, Pakistan. He was never interested in studies and dropped out of school in class 5. During the India-Pakistan petition period, Dharampal moved to India with just Rs 1500 in his hand and stayed at a refugee camp. He and his family settled in this refugee camp with no means of income.


2. Struggled from a very young age..!

Due to no income, Gulati was drawn towards various businesses from a very young age. Before the success of MDH spices, he tried his hands in various factories of soap, rice, fabric. He also tried sweating in wood-work and carriage driving.


3. Inspiration behind the MDH..!

Dharampal Gulati already had some knowledge about the spices, as he used to work at his father's spice shop. And even Dharampal started his business from a small shop in Ajmal Khan Road in Delhi's Karol Bagh in the year 1948. The name behind MDH was inspired by his father's spice shop in Sialkot which had the same name, “Mahashian Di Hatti” (MDH).

When he opened his small shop in 1948, he struggled a lot in the initial stages of the business. And it was nearly a decade later that his shop grew big and Dharampal Gulati expanded branches in Punjab and Delhi. Soon his business empire became huge as he took up the roles of distributor and an exporter. With time he made a 1000 crore empire and started exporting spices to various parts of the world like Uk and UAE.


5. The fit spice king ruled the hearts of the people..!

Despite his age, he would get up early in the morning and exercise daily. Dharampal Gulati always believed in giving back to society. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in the country, In 2019. He donated 90% of his salary to charity, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he also donated masks and kits to corona warriors.
