Every day, tons of steel waste are produced by various steel plants in India. Across the country, steel industries produce 19 million tonnes of steel waste and it could produce up to 50 million tonnes by 2030. And the disposal of this steel waste in landfills or any other natural resources is extremely hazardous to the environment. To utilize the steel waste in a sustainable manner a unique experiment has been made, under which a road has been built with 100% processed steel, substituting the usual construction material. This processed steel slag shows outstanding potential as a replacement for the raw construction material.

The state of Gujarat in India has got this road constructed of steel waste and it is one of the most acceptable examples of sustainable development in urban regions. It has also become the first state in India to have a sustainable road constructed of steel waste. In Gujarat, a road at Hazira Port in Surat city was earlier in low-grade condition due to heavy vehicle transporting on the road, then under this latest experiment, this road was made entirely from steel waste for a robust, durable, and sustainable lifespan. This road is 1 km long and has six different lanes.

The project of this steel waste road comes under the Government of India’s Waste to Wealth and Clean India Campaign. The construction of the road is funded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) with assistance from the Ministry of Street and Policy Commission and the NITI Aayog. The CSIR has stated that the thickness of the road has been decreased by 30%, and this new road can stop most of the damage caused during the monsoon season as well. This new unique road has become a source of encouragement for constructing more sustainable roads and other structures. This type of road is a relatively new concept for roadway construction in India, yet it will help to integrate great ecological sustainability and motivate the construction of roads in a similar manner.
