The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change under the Government of India has started an initiative called Mission LiFE, i.e., Lifestyle of Environment. It’s a global initiative by India to help and support the fight against climate change and lead to a sustainable way of life. It even functions to mobilize individuals to become ‘pro-planet people’. Presently, a mass mobilization across India on LiFE is being organized in the run-up to the long celebration of World Environment Day 2023. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th, and it serves as a global platform to raise awareness about environmental issues such as climate change and encourage positive action. This day also holds much importance in India, as the country grapples with a range of environmental challenges. It is time to reflect on the state of the environment, acknowledge achievements, and collectively strive for a sustainable future.

World Environment Day works as an occasion that brings together millions of people across the nation for awareness and action for our environment. And this year, this significant day is to be celebrated with a drive of Mission LiFE. The idea of this mission was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the World Leaders’ Summit in Glasgow when global leaders discussed about restoring a global pursuit to adopt sustainable lifestyles and practices. The mission advocates the circular economy where the concept of ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle can help in striking a balance between development, economic growth, and sustainability. There are three phases of Mission LiFE and each phase requires a fundamental shift in our approach toward sustainability.

  • Change in Demand: Nudging individuals across the world to practice simple yet effective environment-friendly actions in their daily lives.
  • Change in Supply: Changes in large-scale individual demand are expected to gradually nudge industries and markets to respond and tailor supply and procurement as per the revised demands.
  • Change in Policy: By influencing the demand and supply dynamics of India and the world, the long-term vision of mission LiFE is to trigger shifts in large-scale industrial and government policies that can support both sustainable consumption and production.

Mission LiFE will action the ideas and ideals of LiFE through a mission-mode, scientific and measurable program and demonstrate India’s commitment to work towards climate change and sustainability. The per capita carbon footprint of India is already 60% lower than the global average and it is because our lifestyle is still rooted in sustainable traditional practices. And now the mission LiFE needs people to accept sustainable lifestyles to fight against climate change and other environmental issues which go beyond policy makings and needs wider support from people to save our environment.
