A Normal Day Gone Wrong
In June 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, life was already difficult for many people. Shops were closing early, rules were strict, and everyone was trying to adjust. In a small town called Sathankulam in Tamil Nadu, a father and son were running their small shop as usual.
On one such day, their shop stayed open a little longer than allowed. It was not a serious crime. Many people across the country were breaking small lockdown rules at that time. Usually, such cases ended with a warning or maybe a small fine. But this time, things did not end normally.
The police came, and the father, P. Jayaraj, and his son, J. Bennix, were taken to the police station. No one could have imagined that this small incident would turn into something so serious.
After they were taken to the police station, things became unclear at first. But slowly, details started coming out.
It was reported that both men were badly beaten while in custody. This was not just a normal police force; it was extreme.
They had serious injuries. The kind of injuries that should never happen to someone who is in police custody. Bennix died first, on June 22, 2020. The next day, his father, Jayaraj, also died.
Two deaths, one after the other. People found it hard to believe. How could two people die like this inside a police station? A place where they were supposed to be safe.
When the news came out, people across the country were shocked and angry. Social media was filled with posts asking for justice. Many people shared their views, raised questions, and demanded action. Even those who usually do not talk about such issues felt that something was very wrong here.
The case became widely known, not just in Tamil Nadu but across India. People kept asking one simple question: How could such an incident take place in a police station?
This public pressure played an important role. It made sure the case was not ignored or forgotten, and strict action was taken.
Like many serious cases in India, this one also took time. The investigation went on for about six years. Evidence was collected, witnesses were questioned, and the case moved slowly through the courts.
At first, ten policemen were arrested in connection with the case. Later, one of them died, so the case continued against the remaining nine. There were also changes in judges during the trial. Because of this, the process became even longer.
For the family of Jayaraj and Bennix, it must have been very difficult. Waiting for justice is never easy, especially after the loss of their loved ones.
Finally, in April 2026, the court gave its decision. Nine policemen were sentenced to death.
This was a very strong judgment. In India, the death penalty is not given in every case. It is only given in very serious situations, often called the “rarest of rare” cases. The court believed that this case was one of them.
The judge also said something important, that giving only life imprisonment would not be enough. According to the court, a stricter punishment was needed to send a clear message. This showed how serious the crime was considered.
Along with the punishment, the court also ordered that ₹1.40 crore be given to the victim's family.
Of course, money cannot replace a father and a son. It cannot remove the pain or bring them back. But it is still important. It shows that the court accepted that a big injustice had happened. It is also a way of supporting the family after their loss.
This case is important for many reasons. Firstly, it shows that even people in power can be punished. Many times, there is a belief that police officers do not face strict action. But this case challenges that idea.
Secondly, it brings attention to custodial violence. This is not the first time such a thing has happened. There have been other cases too, but not all of them have become known.
This case became widely discussed, and because of that, it forced people to talk about the issue. It also reminds everyone that rules and power must be used carefully. The police have an important job, but that power should not be misused.
Even though the judgment has been given, the case is not completely over. The policemen who were sentenced can appeal to a higher court. This is a normal part of the legal system in India.
Because of this, the final decision may still take more time. But even at this stage, the message is clear.
This case sends a very strong message to everyone, especially those in authority. No one is above the law. Not even those who are supposed to enforce it.
The line “They thought they were untouchable. Courts proved otherwise.” fits this case very well.
It shows that power does not mean freedom to do anything. It also gives some hope to people. It shows that even if justice is delayed, it is still possible.
The Sathankulam case is not just about one incident. It is about a bigger issue in society. It shows how something small can turn into something very serious when power is misused. It also shows how important it is for people to speak up.
If people had stayed silent, maybe this case would not have reached this point. In the end, two lives were lost in a way that should never have happened. That cannot be changed.
But what can change is how such cases are handled in the future. And maybe, because of this case, things will be taken more seriously. That is why this judgment matters.
