It is said that true love, or someone with whom you can spend a whole phase of life, is rare to find today. Which is right, in a world where everyone has become so busy with their work lives , it becomes difficult to spare a little time for our loved ones. But as it is said, ‘jo hona hota hai , hokar hi rehta hai’.
A love story that began with listening to a pure voice and getting an autograph made the story the best ethereal love story of all time in the Indian music industry – Asha Bhosle ji and Rahul Dev Burman (RD Burman). Two singers are known for their iconic voices behind every rock, pop, and jazz musical song.
RD Burman was the son of the legendary composer Sachin Dev Burman. When his father used to go on sets or studios to make songs and compose them, he used to share his curiosity in coming with him and one day he did. RD Burman once visited the studio where his father used to compose songs and their he listened a voice which he never thought will leave so much impact on him – it was the voice of Asha Bhosle Ji. A pure and true soul one could define her with. After a lot of trial and courage RD Burman went to her and asked her for her autograph , at that time Asha Bhosle ji just gained popularity for her voice and RD Burman was just a teenager with curiosity and dream of singing songs one day. But who would have known that one day our generation will be listening to their songs together ?
That is the power of true love which comes with trial and error but is beautiful like always. The music has that power of bringing people close when nothing else can work out and this happened with both of them when they sang a bunch of songs together, like “Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyar Tera”, which announced a new sound in Bollywood. Through the 1970s, they created magic together: “Dum Maro Dum,” “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,” and “Chura Liya Hai Tumne.” These songs weren’t just hits they were cultural milestones. The versatility in the voices of both the legendary singers gave us the tracks to remember for life.
But like every love story , it has stages, beginning, middle and end. Beginning of this love story was beautiful as it always was but the middle was a bit rollar coaster ride types. Asha Bhosle ji and RD Burman both had a past which used to stop them and mostly Asha ji – she was scared of her difficult past and was hesitant to trust again but RD Burman didn’t let it go so easily he tried and fall in love with her , with her voice and her work and accepted her with all these things and supported her.
Where are we going to find such type of love story in today’s generation ?
And then they finally got married beyond their family restrictions because of the age gap between them in the year 1980. This was a marriage which was built on the pillar of music and love. Asha Bhosle ji once said ‘ music is the basic foundation of their marriage’ which was obvious , the songs which they used to sing narrated them and their story as well. We connect with those songs.
How beautiful it is to remember someone , to love someone with the songs they sung together or the song which they loved? Love stories are said to be a love story when they are lived and admired by the whole generation even after any hardships any struggle , it just lives on and goes on.
The biggest loss to Asha Bhosle ji was in the year 1994 when RD Burman died which bring the end of the most beautiful and iconic love story of the Indian music industry. But if the love is full of truths and love itself it keeps on going and building more regardless of what hurdles come in between.
It was a difficult time for Asha Bhosle ji to stand strong but she did and there love story didn’t ended their. Their songs, which they sa together, remind every person about them. It is said that we remember people with the actions they do, and so today and the upcoming generation will be remembering them with the tracks they published for us to connect with their love stories, and maybe ours too. That is the power of music – it brings people back.
The love story of Asha Bhosle ji and RD Burman is remembered by every single person because it is the proof that love doesn’t always arrive loudly.
Sometimes , it walks quietly – holding a pen in one hand , asking for an autograph and stays for a lifetime.
