India had 126 athletes – 78 men and 48 women participating in the games as part of the Indian contingent, which dominated many fields. It finished among the top five, with talented athletes propelling India to fourth, winning 39 medals in total. Especially, 8 out of 13 gold medals were won by the women athletes, making them inspiring figures for younger ones across the globe. When Asmita Dey won the first gold medal in Judo, she said that she already knew about her championship and was sure of achieving a gold medal for the country. The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded on 2nd August 2026, with women athletes of India leading the country’s medal tally.
In boxing, Sakshi Chaudhary and some of the women led India to new heights in boxing with their golds, while Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu won a gold in weightlifting. They strived for excellence during the 11-day sporting event, ensuring exciting wins and several broken world records. Even as the 2026 Games conclude, India will next time gear up to host the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad for commonwealth games in 2030
The Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow, Scotland, in the year 2026, from 23rd July to 2nd August and were the 19th appearance after the debut at the 1934 Commonwealth Games. Mirabai Chanu, a weightlifter and Lovlina Borgohain, a boxer, both served as the flag bearers and baton bearers, especially during the opening ceremony and Jaismine Lamboria, another boxer, served as the country’s flag bearer during the closing ceremony. India won 39 medals – 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze and ranked fourth in the overall medal table. It won most of its medals in boxing – ten medals, which include seven gold. Para athletes of India had their best performance at a single edition, winning seven medals and three of them gold. Mirabai Chanu, in the women’s 48 kg category, won the first gold medal at the Games. It was her third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, after wrestler Vinesh Phogat won gold medals at three successive Commonwealth Games, and then she became only the second Indian female athlete. Gulveer Singh became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two medals at a single Commonwealth Games after winning a silver medal in the men’s 10,000 metres and a bronze medal in the men’s 5,000 metres, and Tejaswin Shankar won India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in decathlon after achieving a bronze medal. India climbed it’s fourth position and finished at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after a record of breaking 16 medal surge on the ultimate Saturday, which was driven primarily by a stunning gold medal sweep and rush by the boxing contingent, which lifted them to a final tally of 39 medals. It was ahead of Scotland, as Scotland also collected 39 medals but, due to a lower number of silver medals, it was positioned below India.
India also finished fourth at Birmingham 2022 with 61 medals, including 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze. The pared-back Glasgow 2026 programme, excluding nine sports which were featured at Birmingham, includes wrestling, badminton, table tennis and hockey; all of them contributed 25 of India’s 61 medals in 2022. It’s the lowest overall tally since the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games. At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Sharmila Dhankar won a gold medal by playing the women’s shot put F57 event. Her win ended India’s 20-year wait for a para athletics medal at the Games, as Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan won bronze in 2006, marking the gold position for first ever India’s first-ever para athletics gold. Compared to 69 medals won at the 2002 Manchester Games and 61 medals in Birmingham, the number decreases. In 2026, India’s para athletes won seven medals delivering six coming from para athletics. This performance matched the Indians’ total combined across all previous editions. India has won 60 medals at the Paralympic Games, which were 16 golds, 21 silvers and 23 bronzes. Murlikant Petkar is the first Paralympic medallist of India who won the gold medal at the Heidelberg 1972 Games in men’s 50m freestyle and 3 swimming events with a world record time of 37.33 seconds. Indian athletes Gulveer Singh and Tejaswin Shankar delivered ground-breaking milestones for the country’s track and field legacy at international competitions, which highlights the multiple historical medals, rare double finishes and performances against elite global competitors. At the SAI (Sports Authority of India) Bengaluru centre, many of India’s distance runners who train in the country but Gulveer Singh’s commonwealth games races, were spotted.
