An 18-foot-deep farm well in Virparda village, Gujarat, drew crowds after its water began continuously surging like ocean waves while adjacent walls remained calm. While locals speculated about coastal tides and seismic activity, geologists attribute the standing wave phenomenon to rapid aquifer recharge and escaping trapped air. The unusual phenomenon was repeated from an 18-foot well on farmer Pranjivanbhai Saradiya’s land in Virparda village of Morbi taluka. In Gujarat’s Morbi district, residents of a small village have been left stunned after a farm well started behaving like an ordinary well. The farmer first noticed something strange on 2nd August. Instead of remaining still, the water continuously rippled and surged for several days, which drew a lot of crowds and triggered speculation ranging from earthquakes to supernatural activity. Then he reached to his farm that very morning, 2nd of August, and saw that water was overflowing from the well. It was not something he had seen before. It also spilt over the edge. It was happening continuously, as the well was dug about three months before, and this mystery makes the locals even more curious. Videos and conversations went viral, as well as the theories. Some were wandering of an earthquake was about to happen due to the constant movement. The oscillation of well water is not stopping in Gujarat, and it is also known as Well Seiche.
Well Seiche – imagine a bucket full of water. But if we suddenly shake the bucket, the water moves left to right to left to right for some time before becoming still. District geologist J.S.Vadher told about early findings, which point towards the nature more explanation. It was a bizarre phenomenon. Morbi district collector Swapnil Khare reported an order for a detailed investigation with experts from Gujarat’s ground research institute, who are to study the phenomenon. On Friday, Khare said geologists have visited the site, and their preliminary assessment suggests the water movement is suddenly caused by the trapped air beneath the water. As the air trapping shifts, it creates movement on the water surface, and the research team asked them to conduct a detailed study. Finally, the district geologist, Jagdish Vader, attrib this phenomenon to recent heavy rainfall and groundwater recharge, as it happened due to recharging of groundwater as the phenomenon witnessed of amid heavy rainfall. Secondly, the well was on the roadside with a flowing wind, with no fluctuation. There was no seismic activity or earthquake. The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) has also been consulted and confirmed that there was no earthquake event. As we know, Morbi district is close to Gujarat’s coast; several villagers started thinking about various ways the incident, that it was influenced by the Arabian Sea’s high and low tides. Also, according to local belief, the underground water channels are connected to the coastal aquifers, which may cause the well water to increase and move in sync with tidal changes. It was a public belief but not yet confirmed by scientists. But as the video went viral, social media users reacted with a mix of curiosity, scientific explanation and humour after the videos of a mysterious well. Someone explained that lots of rains as the reason, which fills up the underground water areas quickly by pushing the trapped air through the rocks to bubble up and shake the well water. Someone saying rhythmic sloshing. But the video drew attention.
Lastly, a team of researchers from Gandhinagar has been deploying and investigating is going on underway. Still, there was no indication of an emergency activity, and I urge the public not to spread rumours, said the Morbi collector and District Magistrate, Swapnil Khare. Some reports are emerging about a possible gas leak. The investigating team has not yet collected water samples, and it would be premature to conclude based solely on videos without a proper scientific assessment. The activity in the well subsided today, but the teams are still working to determine the exact cause of the phenomenon. The well is 30 feet in diameter and 18 feet deep. The farmer reported that the water in his well has continuously been churning while the water in other nearby wells was completely still. But his well placed in his village, once again began surging on August 5. The unusual movement of the well may be affected by the wind energy project. The folklore perspective – local traditions that often attribute sudden changes to links to the underground to the Arabian Sea, the blessings of local deities or myths. Local authorities routinely step in to barricade such areas, and this is primarily done to prevent structural collapses, hazardous gas inhalation or stampedes caused by large crowds gathering to witness a miracle.
