Mahima Singh, a Dainik Bhaskar reporter, has proved with her strong and brave approach towards the illegal orchestra groups of Bihar, full of dark secrets, that journalism is not about chasing news; it is about chasing the truth.

She has accomplished something that even the most prominent journalists failed to achieve in a lifetime.

She risked her life and conducted a daring sting operation; she covered her identity and lived in a red-light area for five days.

She revealed that girls are lured from West Bengal and Bangladesh and then are sold in the name of orchestras.

These orchestra groups that made marriages in Bihar feel complete and entertained the people were actually a circle of human trafficking.

Once trapped in this vicious circle, it becomes impossible to escape.

Girls were treated worse than animals.

Mahima risked her life just to save these girls and ensure that they live a life they deserve.

A life full of security, comfort and happiness.

Mahima Singh’s journey into the heart of darkness was not just a professional assignment; it was a testament to the power of one individual to disrupt a multi-state criminal enterprise.

TRAPPED IN THE NAME OF AN ORCHESTRA GROUP

How are these individuals lured into this trap?

False promises of legitimate employment in the entertainment industry, such as acting and professional dance training, helped the wrongdoers lure many individuals. Once recruited, they are often trapped in a cycle of trafficking between different operators. Law enforcement agencies have successfully identified and rescued numerous underage individuals from these groups.

Reports from 2025 and 2026 suggested that most of these exploited are minors who were removed from school or home under pretences.

These performers are treated harshly and are frequently kept in controlled and abusive environments.

Any attempt to leave or refuse to comply with the demands of the operators only led to threats of violence.

RISKING HER COMFORT FOR THE WORLD TO KNOW THE TRUTH

Mahima risked her life to show us the truth, and in this process, she was allegedly bought and sold three times in five days. She not only faced constant fear but also dangerous conditions while she was filming evidence against this network of human trafficking.

Her investigation revealed horrifying details about how this network operates.

The reports revealed allegations of forced prostitution, physical and mental abuse, hormonal injections to make minors appear older, forced pregnancies and the sale of babies.

Reports mentioned that many minor girls were rescued. Massive police action in Siwan & Saran against illegal orchestra networks linked to exploitation & trafficking. 21 minor girls were allegedly rescued in Siwan during raids on illegal orchestra setups.

Victims were trafficked from multiple states like West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, UP & Punjab.

She not only broke a story by jeopardising her personal safety, but she also broke a code of silence that had allowed a multi-state exploitation industry to operate covertly for generations.

BUTTERFLY EFFECT

Following Mahima Singh's operation, a joint operation by police and members of organisations working for children’s rights rescued over 40 minor girls aged between 10 and 17 years from as many as 15 orchestra groups under the Kuchaikot police station limits in Bihar's Gopalganj district. Following the arrest of twenty-two people for their alleged involvement in child trafficking and exploitation of children.

“The operation has once again exposed the scale at which minor girls are being trafficked and pushed into orchestra groups operating in parts of Bihar. These children are lured into this highly exploitative network, sexually abused and exploited,” said Manish Sharma, Senior Director of the Association for Voluntary Action

Mahima Singh’s operation acts like a butterfly effect and gives rise to many such actions by the government and individuals towards such crimes.

How Her Bravery Impacts Our Society

Her immense courage to fight for the truth brings a spark to the field of journalism, encouraging journalists to be fearless and bring the harsh truth to the world instead of being distracted from the real issues. Her bravery inspires all the youth to stand up together in unity and fight for those who are oppressed.

In a country where women have suffered for decades just to gain a status of equality, a country where women have been oppressed and are still fighting for their rights, Mahima has proved that when a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women.

Her bravery will keep on motivating every woman out there.

She has forced a society that once looked at these orchestras with indifference to now see them through a lens of accountability. She has also spread awareness among women who get trapped in such a vicious circle because of false promises of employment.
