A Country Full of Political Discussions

India is a country where people talk about politics all the time. There are news channels on television, and social media is full of discussions about what is happening in the country.

Newspapers are read by millions of people every day. People talk about politics and current events at home, in college, at the office and even at tea stalls. It seems like India is a country where everyone can say what they think. The truth is not so simple. A report by Reporters Without Borders said that India is not a free country when it comes to the press. In fact, India is ranked 157th out of 180 countries. This is very low. It means that India has a big problem with press freedom.

The question is, how can a country with many news channels and so much talk about politics have such a low ranking? The answer is not about being able to say what you think. The real question is, can journalists do their job without being afraid? Can they tell the truth without being pressured or threatened? Press freedom is not about how many people are talking but about whether journalists can do their job safely and independently.

India’s Declining Ranking

India's ranking in the World Press Freedom Index has been going up and down over the years. In 2024, India was ranked 159th; then it went up to 151st in 2025. Now it is back down to 157th.

This means that the problem is not just temporary, it is a seated issue. The report says that there are reasons why India's ranking is so low. Journalists are facing more legal pressure, and many are being threatened and attacked. A few big companies own most of the media. This is making it harder for journalists to do their job independently. The report also says that it is getting harder for journalists to do their job without being influenced by politicians.

When we compare India to its neighbouring countries, the situation looks even worse. Nepal is ranked 87th, which is much higher than India. Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Pakistan are also ranked higher than India. China is ranked 178th, which is lower than India, but India's ranking is still a big concern. This is because India says it is a country where people are free to say what they think.

Harassment and Fear Among Journalists

The report also talks about how journalists are being harassed and threatened. Many journalists are being sued, arrested or attacked for reporting on issues. This is making it harder for journalists to do their job. Many are starting to self-censor. They are afraid to report on issues because they do not want to face the consequences.

Independent media organisations are in a difficult position. They do not have a lot of money or legal support, so they are vulnerable to lawsuits and attacks. Many of these journalists are still reporting on important issues, even if it means they have to face challenges.

Media Ownership and Political Influence

Another big problem is that a few big companies own most of the media in India. This means that journalists are not free to report on what they want because they have to think about what their owners want. Many news organisations are not reporting on issues that are important because they do not want to upset their owners or the government.

In recent years, many TV channels have started to prioritise entertainment over journalism. They are more interested in getting ratings than in reporting on important issues. This is making it harder for people to get information, and it is eroding trust in the media.

Rise of Independent Digital Journalism

There is some good news. Independent digital journalism is growing in India. Many online platforms are reporting on issues that the mainstream media is not covering. They are talking about issues like unemployment, rural development and environmental degradation. Many young people are trusting these platforms more than traditional media because they think they are more balanced and in-depth. However, independent journalists are also facing challenges.

They are being trolled, threatened and harassed online. Many are struggling to make a living because they do not have a lot of money or support. Despite these challenges, many independent journalists are still reporting on important issues because they think it is their responsibility to tell the truth.

Why Press Freedom Matters

Press freedom is very important in a democracy. It allows people to get information, and it holds those in power accountable. Without press freedom, it is easy for misinformation to spread and for people to be misled.

India has always been a country where people talk about politics and debate issues. Just because there is a lot of talk, it does not mean that journalists are free to do their job. The real question is, can journalists report on issues without being afraid? Can they tell the truth without being pressured or threatened?

Government Response and Public Debate

The government of India has said that the reports on press freedom are biased and inaccurate. Many Indian journalists and media organisations are also concerned about the state of press freedom in the country. They think that the government is trying to control the media and that this is having an impact on the public.

In conclusion Indias media is one of the biggest and most vocal in the world. Just because there is a lot of noise, it does not mean that journalists are free to do their job. The World Press Freedom Index has highlighted a paradox in India's democracy. On the one hand, India says it is a country where people are free to say what they think. On the other hand, many journalists are facing legal pressures, political interference and corporate control over the media.

Independent journalists and digital media platforms in India are still trying to do a job of reporting news that is important to the public. They are doing this even when things are tough.

This shows that journalism in India is still alive; it is still finding a way to exist when there is a lot of pressure. Press freedom is not just important for journalists; it is important for every person in India. We all need to have access to news that's true and not biased. So if we want to protect our country and make sure it is fair, we need to protect journalism. This is because journalism is a part of what makes a country democratic.
