On a warm May evening, the highway between Pushkar and Ajmer was bustling with its usual cars, motorcycles, and pilgrims wishing to visit the famous Khatu Shyam Temple in Rajasthan, known for its seva samiti that serves thousands of people daily through its Bhandaras, allowing its workers to earn virtuous deeds every day, benefiting hundreds of people. But what if a worker, a volunteer, just like everyone else, crashes into something so wrong that nobody could imagine.

On the night of May 18, Digvijay Singh Chauhan, a member of the Khatu Shyam Seva Samiti, allegedly driving a Fortuner SUV, rammed into three motorcycles in Pushkar, not just killing one person but also found masking several cartons of alcohol.

Who is Digvijay Singh Chauhan?

Digvijay Singh Chauhan is reportedly a known ‘Sevadar’ or a volunteer at the Khatu Shyam Mandir Seva Samiti. According to the media reports and videos surfaced online after the incident, Chauhan is a familiar figure within the temple circle and has often been seen as an active volunteer and performing VIP-management duties for visiting devotees. He is found to be a recognisable follower of Khatu Shyam Ji. As social media footage flooded after the crash, allegedly showing him coordinating activities and serving visitors, he has been regarded as a ‘Chief Sevadar’ by many.

The vehicle involved in the accident, a Toyota Fortuner, was reportedly registered in the name of the Khatu Shyam Mandir Seva Samiti itself. It was also investigated that the vehicle had already had a history of over nine pending speeding cases.

Now Digvijay has been taken into custody.

The Night of the crash

On May 18, the SUV was being rashly driven from Pushkar towards Ajmer at around 9:45 PM. It suddenly lost control and struck various motorcycles on the road. This was when the accused also hit a resident of Dholabhata in Ajmer, Ravi, a 35- year old who worked as a painter and was survived by four sisters. He was travelling on a motorcycle with his brother-in-law, Jitendra alias Sonu, a resident of Nagra. While Ravi was killed, Jitendra was rushed to JLN Hospital for treatment, and several others were injured.

On another motorcycle, Rohit (22), a resident of Shastri Nagar, was travelling with his uncle, Madhusudan Vaishnav (29). Both suffered injuries in the accident. A third motorcycle rider was also hurt and taken to the hospital.

Reports claim that Digvijay was drunk and was behind the wheel that night; many bottles of alcohol were also found in the car.

Troubling details emerge

As the Ajmer police and investigators examined the case, the crash pattern pointed towards the cause of reckless driving rather than an isolated mistake. The car was found crashing into the motorcycles in such a way that they were caved into the road for several meters.

The car itself was found to have been driven off while hanging off a cliff. Both the car and the motorcycles were heavily damaged after a heavy collision.

These details have not only caused trouble but also sparked outrage in the public, especially due to the vehicle’s and the accused's links with the temple and the recovery of alcohol, disgracing the religious sentiments of many.

The Human Cost Behind the Headlines

Amid the media attention and political debates, it is easy to forget the people most affected by the tragedy.

For the family of the deceased victim, the accident is not merely another news story. It is the sudden loss of a loved one whose absence will be felt every day. For the injured victims and their families, recovery involves months of medical treatment, financial strain, and emotional trauma.

This human cost is what makes cases like these so devastating.

Accountability Must Come First

One of the key lessons from this incident is that social status, influence, or religious affiliation should never place anyone above the law.

Whether the accused is a politician, celebrity, business leader, or religious figure, accountability remains at the corner of justice. Public confidence in legal institutions depends on the principle that everyone is treated equally under the law. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, is India’s new criminal code, which must be applied here.

The arrest of the accused highlights the need for legal processes to proceed without fear or favouritism. However, it’s important to remember that guilt or innocence will ultimately be decided through judicial proceedings and evidence presented in court.

A Wake-Up Call for Society

The Khatu Shyam sevadar crash is more than just a story about one individual. It is a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the fateful consequences that can take place due to one’s carelessness.

Every year, countless road accidents occur because drivers underestimate the risks of speeding or driving after consuming alcohol. Yet each tragedy carries the same painful message: a moment of negligence can destroy multiple lives forever.

As investigations continue, the focus should remain on justice for the victims, support for the affected families, and stronger efforts to promote road safety. Faith can inspire people, institutions can guide communities, and laws can punish wrongdoers, but none of these can undo a life lost on the road.

That is the true tragedy at the heart of this story.
