The Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School in Jaisalmer is not just an architectural marvel but also a testament to how education, sustainability and community participation can come together to bring about lasting social change.
American architect Diana Kellogg designed the school, which was developed by the CITTA Foundation to offer quality education to underprivileged girls in rural Rajasthan. The campus had a capacity of 400 students, but in its first intake it had only 140 girls. Rather than being a sign of underuse, this phased beginning was a carefully planned decision to ensure the school's long-term success.
The school has been named after Princess Rajkumari Ratnavati, who is revered in local folklore for her bravery, kindness, and strong leadership during a historical siege. In taking her name as inspiration, the school tries to imbibe those qualities into every one of its students.
For girls growing up in the villages of rural Rajasthan, receiving an education can be difficult owing to poverty and other social and infrastructure barriers. The Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School works to address these issues and provide free education, transport, meals, uniforms, and a secure educational environment to all the girls it serves. Instead of using electricity, the structure has been built according to the ancient architectural principle fused with modern construction techniques. The building has been constructed using the local sandstone from Jaisalmer, which absorbs heat gradually throughout the day and releases it slowly when the sun sets. The process,s called thermal mass, ss makes sure that the structure stays cool.
The walls have been constructed using lime plaster as a coating. Unlike cement, lime plaster allows moisture to seep in and evaporate slowly, thus regulating the temperature and humidity levels naturally.
An interesting addition to the design is the school’s jali, or stone lattice. The lattice helps in letting the fresh air in, while simultaneously blocking sunlight. The wind that moves through the slits moves faster due to the Venturi effect.
In addition, the school is able to utilise the principle of the stack effect for ventilation of the building. This principle works because hot air rises up; therefore, openings at the upper level of the building make possible the outflow of hot air and inflow of cool air at the lower openings.
When combined together, these passive cooling methods can bring down indoor temperatures up to 10–17 degrees Celsius, which makes it possible to stay comfortable and cool at the learning process even in hot seasons of Rajasthan without spending energy.
The unique shape of the building also shows the cultural heritage of the area. The elliptical form helps protect from the heat of the desert winds and allows to create shady areas outside the building for communication of the students.
Another factor that plays its role is who built the school. It is worth mentioning that the majority of the workers on the project were local people; even the fathers of the future pupils were among the builders. Thus, it helped to develop community feeling and ownership towards the school building.
Use of locally available materials like sandstone helped to reduce the cost of transportation and support local artisans.
Everything within the school has been tailored, taking into account the challenges that are faced within rural areas. In designing the uniform of the children attending school, the Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee ensured that the children would be able to use them over a number of years before they became tight as a result of growth. This makes sure that every child attending school has appropriate uniforms and the costs involved are reduced.
The development also involves a larger area of development where there will be provision for vocational training, women empowerment programs and activities of the community.
