A senior citizen asked a stranger not to spit in public. He ended up in hospital with a fractured leg. The incident has shaken Maharashtra and, briefly, even united its fiercest political rivals.

On the evening of Tuesday, June 10, 2026, an elderly man stepped out of Jupiter Hospital in Thane. What should have been an unremarkable end to a hospital visit turned into something far more disturbing. A cab driver allegedly attacked the senior citizen following a dispute that reportedly began when the elderly man objected to the driver spitting in a public place. What started as a polite civic request escalated into a physical confrontation that left the victim hospitalised.

The driver, who hails from outside the state, allegedly assaulted the man, causing him severe injuries. In the viral video, the driver was also seen picking up a stone to hit the elderly man. The victim reportedly suffered a fractured leg during the incident, triggering widespread outrage. The footage spread rapidly across social media platforms, reaching the highest offices of Maharashtra's government within hours. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde personally watched the viral video, contacted police officials, and demanded strict action against the accused. Shinde's response was unusually direct. He directed Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre to book the accused under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 109 — attempt to murder. The Deputy CM did not mince words: "If a person is brutally assaulted merely for pointing out that someone is littering, it will not be accepted at any cost," he was quoted as saying.

As of the time of reporting, police had not yet registered a formal case, as the victim had not come forward to file a complaint.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the incident's aftermath was what happened on the political front. In a rare show of unity cutting across political lines, leaders from the rival Shiv Sena factions joined hands in Thane to track down the accused cab driver. According to Shiv Sena UBT leader Sumit Borate, the video was shared with him by Shinde Sena leader Nitesh Patole, following which both leaders worked together to identify and locate the accused driver. After tracing him, the duo confronted the driver and later handed him over to the Vartak Nagar Police for legal action. Borate stressed that the episode demonstrated how humanity and social responsibility can rise above political differences. The two factions have remained bitter political opponents since the Shiv Sena split, making this collaboration all the more significant.

The location of the assault, the pavement outside a major hospital, has sharpened public anger considerably. Jupiter Hospital is one of Thane's most prominent medical institutions, a place people visit at their most vulnerable. The idea that a simple act of civic mindfulness could be met with life-threatening violence in such a setting has struck a nerve across the city and beyond. The incident also puts a spotlight on a pattern of roadside aggression that authorities in Maharashtra have been slow to address. The ease with which the altercation turned violent, and the fact that the victim was elderly, have made this case a flashpoint for broader anxieties about public safety and civil behaviour in urban India.

For now, the accused is in police custody. The elderly victim is recovering. And a city is asking itself an uncomfortable question: what does it mean when asking someone to be decent in public can cost you a fractured leg?
