As an IAS Officer, there is a special sense of high responsibility that comes with having such a title. It is a hard-earned position that ensures you an extremely important role in India.

But what if an IAS Officer was so good at their own craft that they managed to somehow break the very systems that held the nation in place?

This is the case for the current Maharashtra IAS Officer, known as Tukaram Mundhe.

But first,

What is an IAS Officer?

An Indian Administrative Service Officer is a role that comes with many responsibilities. With the majority of tasks being handled, administrative plans and writing government policies that can be executed from the ideas of elected leaders, collecting revenue and handling land records and fights, even working with the police to keep an eye on community tensions, emergencies, riots, etc., it’s no wonder that it’s such an important title.

The UPSC Exam (The exam for said position) gains more than lakhs of participants each year, and only a handful of them are selected to become the new Officers of the country, where they are then promptly assigned to states with their families in accordance with their various responsibilities.

So, now that we have a basic understanding of an IAS Officer,

What truly makes Tukaram Mundhe such a special case?

Tukaram Mundhe

Tukaram Mundhe was from a small village in the Beed district of Maharashtra and had become an IAS Officer of the 2005 Batch of officers.

Even though he had failed three times writing the UPSC Exam during his post-graduation in Aurangabad, he still managed to keep hope and cracked the exam on his fourth attempt, fulfilling his lifelong dream.

He was instantly recognised for his unique style of work and his strong bravery that shook most of the already-in-place system.

He was certainly an unstoppable force with a position no one could ever take away, and it was due to this that led to the many transfers following his said workflow.

Transfers

As of today, Tukaram Mundhe has been transferred 24 times in 21 years. An astounding number of transfers for just one officer.

But for every transfer that happened, he stood his ground and made sure to fix the very corrupt system that many are still benefiting from to this day.

He had made it a point to make a difference in many things within society, such as better water supply in Jalna, reducing teacher absenteeism in Nagpur, and even imposing heavy fines on illegal sand miners.

There was even the case of him raiding illegal bars, which also got him transferred due to angered politicians, and even exposing the mafia. Even under threats, backlash and media pressure, he still remained steadfast in his position and kept on with his work.

To this day, many of his decisions follow the same criteria: they must be legal, morally correct, and in the public interest.

The main key here was his extreme drive for honesty and dedication to calling out problems in the system that people were benefiting from, as well as even hunting down corrupt groups that directly benefited from a corrupt system. These were the main aspects that angered powerful politicians enough to the point where they would accuse him of irregularities and many other mistakes that he had made.

By the time his 23rd transfer had occurred, and even though being moved all over was pressuring, he ended up receiving the National Award for Social Justice and Empowerment for his hard work.

As of now, he has been appointed as the Secretary of the Divyang Kalyan Department, and continues to work on his policy despite it all.

We can only wonder what the future has in store for his many endeavours.

The Mirror

Tukaram Mundhe serves as a special kind of officer who really reveals the true nature of the Indian bureaucracy.

There is no doubt that the number of transfers reflects just how the system has been, and how many changes have to be made in order to keep the system safe, honest and secure for everyone involved.

He was a person who challenged the system in place, even when it cost him his own position, something that was essential to him for his livelihood, and even then still kept a bold and determined stance in the face of many such corruptions, transfers, and pressures.

He is a reminder to us that anyone can challenge the system and make the world a better place, as it can truly just be one person against an entire bureaucracy that shakes it up so badly, bringing to light the real, true nature.

He is not just an officer, but a mirror that shows us the true flaws in our home.

So if he can do so much, why can’t we?

To note what he himself has stated in many speeches and interviews, which truly highlights why a person like him is important in our society.

“If I cannot transform the system, then who else can?”
