Success is frequently viewed as a direct path, but the most fascinating stories of success involve faith, determination, and going back to square one. Janhavi Ajit Rao’s extraordinary journey from an IT professional to a doctor is a good example. Her journey showcases that it is never too late to fulfil one’s ambition even if the journey is going to be long and difficult.
For almost 18 years, Janhavi Ajit Rao worked as a software engineer,r achieving success. She operated in India and the US, which helped her gain tremendous experience in the tech field. Eventually, she created her own IT company in Bengaluru, dealing with defence electronics. From the outside, she seemed to have everything to be successful, providing her with immense knowledge and years of industry experience.
Nonetheless, in 2003, she faced a huge change when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder that makes the lives of patients with this disease difficult because of pain and swelling of joints. Like any patient suffering from chronic diseases, she spent a lot of time in hospitals and clinics. What is more, in contrast to other patients who could only view severe health challenges as challenges to face, she began to learn to analyse medical care from a patient’s perspective. Years passed, and she carried an idea in her mind for many years.
Although many people tend to dismiss such a plan of entering medical school because of their age, financial commitment, or fear of change, Janhavi decided to take a different path. In 2013, at the age of 40, being a long-time professional, she entered the MBBS program at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in Bengaluru. Accordingly, entering medical university at the age when most professionals have already built up careers was not easy for her at all. The educational process was rather difficult because Janhavi had to learn alongside other students who were much younger than her.
After being away from the life of a student for almost two decades and joining the corporate sector, Janhavi had an entirely new journey to start. The field of medicine is characterised by long hours, a wide-ranging syllabus and emotional conflict. Yet, she faced each of these challenges as one should – with dedication and hard work. Janhavi’s grown-up persona as well as her professional experiences were thus used in order to survive.
Eight years later, with hard work, she got her medical degree. At the age of 47, for Janhavi, what seemed to be the impossible dream is a reality now. Presently, she is working as a primary care doctor in the United States while pursuing her MD degree.
The story of Janhavi has many lessons to impart to individuals who are students or professionals or who are thinking about making a career change. The first lesson is that one must never consider age as an obstacle in the learning process. Education is timeless, and one can develop personally at any age. The second lesson learned is that challenges can often lead to unexpected opportunities. What started as a distressing health condition paved the way for Janhavi in fulfilling her true calling to work in the field of medicine. The last lesson is that courage is not the absence of fear; it is the act of courageously moving forward even without certainty in the way ahead.
Numerous people are making transitions in their careers and engaging in jobs that are unthinkable today. Janhavi is just one example of someone who has shown that success is not in the ability to stick to one course of life but in having the ability to do what one really wants.
Her amazing transition from engineer to doctor teaches us that age is no barrier to working towards our dreams. Sporting her determination, perseverance, and ability to adapt, Janhavi shows that starting over and finding meaning in your life is achievable at any age, as long as you are willing to devote effort to learning.
