Janhavi Ajit Rao was born and raised in Aurangabad, a major historic city in Maharashtra. In her childhood, she was very keen and curious to learn about various subjects. She filled her life with books and knowledge and was inspired to study more. She excelled in her studies and pursued her higher education in the United States.
Similar to any student in the world, she too followed a single line of education at first. But later, her life experiences taught her that she could be so much more than remain confined to a single profession. These experiences shaped her whole life and changed her perspective as well as many others.
She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She built a successful career in the technology industry, working with leading companies in the United States before returning to India in 2002. In Bengaluru, she continued working in the technology sector and later founded her own defence electronics company, establishing herself as a successful entrepreneur after nearly 18 years in engineering.
After giving her whole life to a single line of work, she gained a secure and stable life for herself as well as for her family. One wishes nothing else but stability in life, where no one has to worry about financial issues.
Change of Perspective: What motivated Janhavi Ajit Rao to leave her successful career in engineering?
But a turning point came in Janhavi Ajit Rao’s life when she was determined to start her life once again from scratch. In 2003, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease. During her treatment, she experienced healthcare from the patient’s perspective and was deeply moved by the compassion, knowledge and dedication of the doctors who cared for her. That experience ignited a passion for medicine and planted the idea of becoming a doctor herself. However, her passion to become a doctor cost her a secure and successful career in engineering. She was left with no choice but to leave her line of work to start again from scratch as a student. But because of her passion for learning, she was able to leave everything behind her and begin a new chapter of her life.
Following One’s Passion
In 2013, Janhavi Ajit Rao made a bold decision in her life. Determined to follow this new purpose and because of her curiosity and passion for learning, she left her engineering career and started preparing for a medical exam. At the age of 40, she left behind her highly successful and secure job and business and enrolled as a student in the MBBS programme at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru. Returning to student life after two decades was challenging, especially while studying alongside classmates almost half her age. However, through perseverance and hard work, she completed her medical degree after eight years.
Following her MBBS, she pursued postgraduate medical training in the United States. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Riverside University Health System and currently serves as a Primary Care Physician with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in San Diego, California, while continuing her medical education through an MD programme.
