Faith is one of the strongest forces in India. Faith helps people feel they belong, that their prayers are being heard, and that they are blessed by God. Thousands and Lakhs of devotees go to temples to do their prayers and for some moments of peace. They also donate their hard-earned money to the temple’s donation box for the development and betterment of the temple. These donations do not only come from well-to-do businessmen or landowners, it also come from common people, the hard-working laborers, the women who do part-time jobs to feed their children, the farmers and the people who give their money even if their pockets are not always fat and full. They believe their donations are being used for a sacred and greater purpose. But where is their money actually being used? Is there any transparency? Is there any accountability regarding the use of these donations? What happens when the trust of these devotees is broken? What happens when they realise their money is not being used for a good deed or purpose? This becomes a direct strike towards their faith.
According to recent controversies, Ram Temple, also known as Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, is facing allegations regarding the misuse and theft of the donation money. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) assigned by the Uttar Pradesh Government is investigating the alleged misappropriation of the donations. The SIT is directly questioning the most senior officials associated with the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The investigation has highlighted concerns about the authorities' handling of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The SIT consists of three members and they are asked to submit a prefatory report in seven days and a final report in 15 days. The issue began when Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav claimed that crores of rupees donated to the temple are missing, and he argued that the donation-counting process’s CCTV footage should be shown to the public because the devotees deserve answers. According to sources, the CCTV footage in the temple auto-deletes after 45 days, which raises a lot of questions about the process of handling the donation money.
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust denied all the allegations and claimed that all the donation money is handled carefully with proper reports involving bank statements. The political upheaval increased when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajneesh Singh wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give proper clarification regarding all the donation money collected in the temple. He also argued that it is the devotees’ right to know where their money is being used. Later, Former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh claimed to know of the misuse of the donations in the temple, but he didn’t provide any details. Senior BJP leader Vinay Katiyar also argued that this is a serious allegation and strict actions should be taken if illegal actions are found.
According to reports of the investigation, two employees of the temple who actively worked in the counting process of the donation in the temple are suspects. One of the employees, Luv Kush Mishra, might be involved in the theft of the donation money. According to the sources, investigators have found Rs. 10 lakh in cash in his house during a residence search. One half was found inside a cupboard and another half was found concealed under a pile of cow dung.
However, the money which was found in the house has not been proven to be directly connected to the donation controversy. Although it remains as the key focus in the case. The investigators also questioned the family of Luv Kush Mishra, and they are denying all the allegations. Another employee involved in the counting and collection process of the donation money is also being questioned. A bigger concern has been raised because the investigators found unusual expenses that did not really match their monthly earnings, which is around Rs 18,000 - 20,000. One employee allegedly purchased a land worth around Rs 1.5 crores and another employee bought a property approximately around Rs 40 lakhs. This investigation has led further to a Public Interest Litigation which has been filed to Allahabad High Court seeking a CBI investigation and a full inspection of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. A letter has also been sent to the Chief Justice of India requesting the Supreme Court to monitor the case.
According to sources, during the inception of the Ram Temple, on the first day of January 2024, devotees donated around Rs 3.17 crores. The next 11 days, donations reportedly crossed Rs 11 crores. During 2024-2025, the trust reported that the donations were approximately Rs 327 crores. With everything that has been surfaced through sources and the ongoing investigations, at present, the allegations are not yet proven. The SIT is still investigating and collecting information before I can declare who is at fault, whether any money was misused or stolen, what is true and what is false. Until then, all the allegations remain unconfirmed.
However, at its core, these allegations and controversy undoubtedly question the authorities, but it also shakes the devotee’s trust and faith. It highlights injustice and raises questions about whether donations are truly meant for a sacred or greater purpose, or are they meant to fill the pockets of the corrupted authorities? In India, many temples receive donations. Not only from wealthy people but also from ordinary people. Regardless of their background, people deserve transparency and a clear demonstration of the use of the donation money. This should be mandatory and it will help to maintain trust between devotees and the authorities of the temple. At the end of the day, devotees demand accountability from the people who manage the money. It is their right, as it is their hard-earned money.
