A well in a village in Gujarat has been rippling mysteriously since 2nd Aug, in the village of Virpardast, 2026. Its resemblance to ocean waves has attracted widespread attention, drawing people off the highway to watch it. The three-month-old well belongs to farmer Pranjivanbhai Sadariya in the Virparda village. While the village has other wells, this is the only one behaving as such, sparking rumours about how one hole in the ground can differ from its neighbours.

Videos of the well gained wide circulation on social media, producing three stories. The first was seismic: the probability of an earthquake or the early tremor of one. The second was supernatural, suggesting that the well was haunted or possessed. The third (and perhaps the most intriguing) was topographic. Morbi (the sub-district within which the village is located) has long held a folk belief that the underground channels connect inland wells to the Arabian Sea, their movement and behaviour dictated more by the tidal rhythm of the sea rather than the sky.

Through the first week of August, crowds gathered at the barricaded site, alarming the district administration at the footfall as well as the rumours, requesting people to stop speculating until an official assessment was complete.

Following a preliminary site visit, district geologist J. S. Vadher ruled out seismic activity. The Institute of Seismological Research in Gandhinagar confirmed that there was no active fault line running through the area. Vadher also offered a working explanation pointing to the monsoon. Heavy upstream rainfall recharged the local aquifer, and the pressure of that recharge released air trapped in the pore spaces of the surrounding rock, causing a disturbance in the water column below. Following the preliminary visit, the District Collector, Swapnil Khare, asked the Gujarat Groundwater Research Institute in Gandhinagar to send a team for a more exhaustive technical study.

Nevertheless, this behaviour of the well has a name. A “well seiche” refers to an oscillation caused by a disturbance from recharging groundwater, shifting air pockets, or an external vibration which matches the well’s own natural frequency, keeping it moving long after the disturbance has subsided. The underlying logic resembles the push to a swing at the precise moment in its arc which keeps the swing in momentum without needing another push.

Numerous recorded instances show how water wells register seismic activity from a distance of thousands of kilometres. Scientists refer to the resulting oscillating patterns as “hydroseismograms”. The 1964 Alaska earthquake produced measurable water level fluctuations in 716 wells across the United States. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan influenced groundwater levels as far away as the American Midwest. A single well in Christiansburg, Virginia, is unusually responsive to seismic waves generated on the far side of the planet, rising and falling as those waves pass beneath it. In India, geologists studying a well in the Rajasthan Thar Desert recorded water level shifts roughly 24 hours ahead of earthquakes with epicentres 100-800 kilometres away. This particular case also raised the possibility of using well behaviour as an early warning signal rather than dismissing it.

In the case of Virparda, however, the Institute of Seismological Research checked this relationship between well behaviour and a future earthquake and found no fault line that could carry a signal, in the first place. Wells need a geological pathway to register an earthquake. However, this also indicates that the theory or belief of a well’s link to forces beyond its rim is not a supernatural leap. The narrative of a well responding to unseen disturbances is not mere folklore. Scientifically, it is possible under certain conditions. While this was not applicable in the case of the Virparda well, in principle, the belief that the well responds to unseen forces operating at a distance was correct.

In light of these facts, the Arabian Sea theory appears most plausible. It must be noted, however, that officials have neither confirmed nor denied it. Investigation into the cause of the well’s behaviour is yet ongoing.

Hydrologists routinely use a well’s tidal signature to calculate the elastic properties of the rock around it, and coastal aquifers genuinely do respond to tidal loading. In this case, however, the well is not behaving on a twelve-hour cycle the way tide-linked aquifers are known to. Additionally, Morbi is 35 kilometres inland. This is a long distance for a signal that weakens with depth and is resisted by rocks and earth.

Therefore, while the broad argument remains plausible, the specifics of the Virparda well do not fulfil the conditions for a clean and purely scientific explanation. The singular well remains a mystery. Morbi’s geology cannot carry the register of an earthquake. The distance is too vast, and the rhythm does not coincide to classify as a tidal match. The seiche remains a plausible mechanism which awaits the Gandhinagar team’s report. To offer a comprehensive explanation and truly dissipate all rumours, it must explain not just the groundwater recharge and trapped air recharge but how it happens to be the one lone well among others in the same vicinity that responded with oscillation to the monsoon. It must also shed light on what distinguishes this well from its neighbours.
