She Competed With Students Half Her Age, And Won

The conventional notion about career growth is that people should opt for a profession at a young age and climb the ladder of that profession to reach higher levels of experience, power, and stability. Any drastic career shift later in life is often viewed as an unnecessary risk. However, a handful of bold-spirited individuals dare to take the risk to restart their career at an unconventional age. Janhavi Ajit Rao is one such inspiring example. After spending almost 2 decades in the software field, Rao took the decision to go back to school to join a medical college at the age of 40.

When she decided to enrol in a medical college, she was already a successful software professional and an established businesswoman. Her career path took a turn when she joined Infosys, one of India’s largest and most prestigious IT companies, after obtaining a degree in engineering from Mumbai University. Over the span of 6 long years, she gained extensive work experience and went on to contribute towards the growth of other software giants like Wipro, PMC-Sierra, and Microsoft. Eventually, she founded her own defence electronics company in Bangalore.

However, a sudden turn of events occurred in 2003 when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. As a patient, she came to realise the critical role played by doctors in helping people deal with this crippling disease. She also realised how empathetic doctors could make a huge difference to patients going through such trials. The realisation prompted her to enrol as a medical student. Despite having an established career in the software field, she decided to pursue her alternate career option.

For an individual of Janhavi Rao’s age, it would have been next to impossible to begin medical studies. Not only is the medical field highly competitive, but it also requires students to undergo a rigorous 5+ year educational curriculum. Nevertheless, she chose to take up the challenge and enrolled at the M. S. Ramaiah Medical College in Bangalore in 2013. Despite uncertainty, Rao chose to pursue medicine as she believed that a chance to start over was far more precious than the risks involved in attempting to shift careers at an advanced age.

As she began her journey to becoming a doctor, she had to struggle between a host of challenges and opportunities. It was indeed an unsettling task to shift from engineering to medicine at the age of 40. Rao had to first get accustomed to the long hours of sitting and studying that were a characteristic feature of medical education. Moreover, there was also the challenge of understanding subjects that she hadn’t studied in her earlier years of academics. However, these challenges did not discourage her. In fact, she took the opportunity to gain exposure to new ideas, concepts, and research in the medical field.

Her engineering background helped her comprehend complex medical topics with much greater ease. Rao used her engineering skills to understand core medical subjects and principles. The experience of working in the corporate sector for over a decade also helped her develop strong analytical and observational skills that further aided her in acquiring medical training at a later age.

The long process of medical education and training eventually paid off. After completing her course, Rao moved to the U.S. to pursue higher education in medicine. Presently, she is a primary care physician in the U.S. while she continues to complete her medical education. Her incredible journey has sparked great interest on social media as many people perceive her to be a true source of inspiration. Rao has become a living reminder of how education never grows old, and it is always worthwhile to pursue one’s dreams despite all odds.

Her journey has helped create a paradigm shift among people all around the world. Janhavi Rao has demonstrated how an unconventional career choice can be rewarding both personally and professionally.
