Janhavi, 40, is currently working as a Primary Care Physician at the US Department of Veterans Affairs while pursuing her M.D.
Introducing her as an engineer and then stating that she is working as a physician might seem a bit surprising and raise questions in your mind. To clarify your doubts, let’s delve deeper into her story.
Rao was born in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, and later on moved to the US to pursue Engineering. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics from the University of California, San Diego, and a Master’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Jahanvi had established herself very prominently in the technology sector, proving her excellence by working with the top companies in the US. She served in major companies like Mphasis, Aureole Technologies Private Limited, Microsoft, and PMC-Sierra. She also served at Spectranta Systems as its director.
She is married to an engineer. In 2002, she returned to India with her husband and settled in Bangalore. There, she worked as a Project Manager for Wipro before launching her own startup company in the defence electronics industry in 2009.
She spent 18 years of her life as an engineer before venturing into a new path altogether. Her decision to transition into medicine despite having built a successful engineering career and her own firm was shaped by a significant health challenge when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Through her experiences as an arthritis patient, she witnessed the role of doctors in saving human lives, which deeply moved her and inspired her to take up a career in medicine at the age of 40. Coming forth as an example of fierce courage and determination, she chose to do what most people would hesitate to attempt and maybe never end up doing.
Soon, she enrolled in a medical course at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in 2013 and eventually earned her MBBS degree after tirelessly working for 8 years. She devoted years to studying and training with a batch of students half her age. Thereafter, she finally received her MBBS degree and once again moved back to the US. She completed her residency at Riverdale University in Internal Medicine and began working as a physician.
Her journey inspires us to embrace change, accept the challenges that come with it and pursue one’s true calling.
