A Parasite that Doesn’t Wait for You to Die

Most maggots wait for something to die before they start feeding. The New World Screwworm does not wait. Its larvae burrow directly into the living flesh of a warm-blooded animal, entering through something as small as a tick bite, a barbed-wire scratch, or a newborn calf’s healing navel, and keep eating as the wound grows larger and more infected. Left untreated, an infested animal can die within days. It sounds like the plot of a horror film, but it is currently a live agricultural emergency spreading north through Mexico toward the United States, and the reason it matters to anyone who eats beef is economic as much as biological.

How America Beat It the First Time

The screwworm used to be a routine, brutal cost of ranching across the southern United States. By the 1950s, it was destroying an estimated 200 million dollars a year in cattle and dairy losses, worth roughly 1.8 billion dollars today. The fix came from two USDA entomologists, Edward Knipling and Raymond Bushland, working out of a research station in Menard, Texas. Knipling had noticed something unusual about the fly: female screwworms mate only once in their lifetime. If a female mated with a sterilised male, every egg she ever laid afterwards would be a dead end. Bushland worked out how to mass-produce the flies and sterilise them with radiation, building on techniques the Nobel laureate geneticist Hermann Muller had described for fruit flies a few years earlier.

The method, now called the Sterile Insect Technique, was tested in 1954 on the island of Curaçao, where it wiped out the local screwworm population in just seven weeks. Scaled up across the American South, the same approach eliminated the fly from the U.S. mainland by 1966. For nearly sixty years afterwards, a single sterile-fly production plant in Panama, funded almost entirely by the U.S. government, held a biological barrier at the Panama-Colombia border, keeping the parasite contained to South America.

The Barrier is Breaking

That barrier started failing in 2023, when the outbreak began moving north through Central America again. It reached Mexico in November 2024, and by January 2026, Mexico and Central American countries combined were reporting more than 1,190 human cases and seven deaths, alongside hundreds of thousands of animal infections. On June 3, 2026, USDA confirmed the parasite had crossed into the United States itself, found in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. Within days, additional cases turned up in cattle, a goat, and even a pet dog in neighbouring New Mexico. By that point, Central America and Mexico combined had reported more than 185,000 animal cases and upward of 2,193 human cases.

The response has been enormous. The U.S. and Mexico have been releasing roughly 100 million sterile flies a week near the border, and a new production facility is under construction to push weekly output toward 500 million, the same volume used to win the original eradication fight in the 1960s. The U.S. also closed its border to live cattle imports from Mexico in mid-2025, a move that has already cost the busiest cattle crossing in New Mexico more than a billion dollars in trade.

Why Your Grocery Bill is Part of this Story

None of this is a direct food-safety issue. USDA and public health officials are clear that screwworm does not contaminate meat, and any infested animal identified during routine inspection would never enter the food supply. The real threat runs through the supply side of the industry instead. U.S. cattle herds are already at their smallest size since the 1950s because of years of drought and rising feed costs, and closing the border to Mexican cattle removes a significant source of the young animals U.S. feedlots rely on to rebuild those herds. Fewer cattle moving through the system typically shows up months later as higher beef prices at the register, and analysts have flagged the screwworm-driven import ban as one more pressure pushing those prices further up on top of an already tight market.

There is also a human health dimension that rarely makes it into agricultural coverage. Screwworm myiasis, the medical term for infestation, can be fatal in people if untreated, and case-fatality rates in the current Central American outbreak have run alarmingly high in some periods. The risk to people in the U.S. remains low for now, concentrated among those who have travelled to affected regions, but health authorities are treating it seriously enough to issue formal advisories to clinicians who may never have seen a screwworm case in their careers, since the parasite has not circulated domestically in sixty years.

The Bigger Pattern

What makes the screwworm’s return worth paying attention to beyond the immediate outbreak is what it says about the durability of disease eradication generally. Eradicating a pest does not mean deleting it from the planet; it means winning a containment war that has to be actively refought at the border, indefinitely, often with infrastructure and funding that can quietly atrophy once the original threat fades from public memory. The screwworm barrier in Panama held for decades, but a program built to manage a contained population in South America was not sized for a sustained northward push, and it is now being rebuilt in real time under pressure.

Warmer, wetter conditions linked to climate change are also widening the geographic window in which screwworm flies can survive and reproduce, giving the parasite more territory to exploit even where control programs are working as designed. That combination, ageing containment infrastructure meeting an expanding climate envelope, is not unique to the screwworm. It is a preview of the kind of problem public health and agriculture agencies are likely to keep encountering: old victories that were never actually permanent, just paused.
