Three Disasters, Three Rescues, One Final Sacrifice For Rajesh

Amid the rushing water currents and losing hope, a young man held on to the rope of faith before the cold waters swallowed him mercilessly.

R. Rajesh, a 36-year-old man from Trivandrum, Kerala, lost his life while trying to save a stranded farmer in the Kannur floods a month ago. An expert swimmer and rope-rappelling trainer, he worked as a swimming instructor at Edavarambu and as a rappelling instructor at Meenthulli Waterfalls in Kannur. Owing to his expertise in rescue management and his skilful ability to work with water, he had been an active rescue participant in the 2018 great floods of Kerala and the Wayanad landslides of 2024, saving many people from the devastating peril and carrying them to safety. His true kindness and willingness to contribute to society made him an icon among many people.

On Saturday, August 1st, 2026, the Kannur district of Kerala was hit by heavy rain, nonstop, in a short period of time, triggering flash floods in the region. Water was quick to sweep its way into homes and establishments, evoking panic among the natives and leaving less time for escape. Rescue boats, helicopters and NDRF teams were soon deployed. Around 316 relief camps were opened across the state, sheltering almost 11,000 people. Rajesh, having moved to Kannur for his job, just like ever, got into his safety suit and equipment, ready to serve the distraught people of Kannur.

Benny, an elderly farmer, became an unexpected victim of the flood. Aged sixty-one, he had gone to check the condition of his plantation fields after hearing about the disaster. But upon reaching the site, he was soon trapped by the water overflowing from the swollen river, which immediately surrounded the islet, putting him in a helpless situation. Hearing the news, Rajesh, along with his two companions, reached the site to rescue the man.

Reports claim Rajesh swam across the waters to reach Benny with the support of a rope extended from either end. While bringing back Benny, the rescuer noticed the former’s weak state in holding onto the rope. Without a second thought, Rajesh took off his own life jacket, offering it to the man. However, the repercussions of the selfless act left Rajesh weakened against the forceful currents, making him loose the grip and eventually be swept away by the waters.

Fire and rescue services personnel from the district were informed of the situation and took the lead in investigating any clues about Rajesh. After three intense days of search, Rajesh’s lifeless body was found lying on one of the river banks. His family, consisting of a wife and two young boys, had already travelled back from Trivandrum after his missing news was reported. Some sources claim the body was to the point beyond recognition.

Leaving behind the memories of a kind soul and inevitable sorrow, Rajesh bid a sorrowful farewell. The brave soul was offered state honours, and the body was cremated with thousands of witnesses around. The Chief Minister of Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, took part in the funeral, remembering the young man for his great bravery and compassion. He promised a great offer, on behalf of the state government, in taking the responsibility for completing the construction of Rajesh’s incomplete house in his hometown, fulfilling the deceased’s dream.

Rajesh’s story is one among the millions who, with their selfless heart, lend their soul for the survival of others. His story resonated with millions of families who have lost their loved ones and their dreams because of a leap of faith. Perhaps somewhere along the lines of ‘yours’ and ‘theirs’, crises such as these remind us of the value of humanity and empathy, evoking the deep-buried camaraderie within us.
