Akarshana Sathish, a grade 7 student of the Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet has accomplished a remarkable feat by single-handedly setting up of seven libraries.
This 11-year-old's journey began in 2021 with a visit to the MNJ Cancer Children's Hospital. She had visited the premises to provide food for the patients. During that, she noticed the kid's requests for coloring books, sparking the idea of collecting books for those who are in need.
With the support and perfect determination, she started gathering books from her neighbors, classmates, and relatives. Her efforts paid off as she managed to collect some 5,800 used books. Utilizing them, she established 6 libraries, each serving different communities.
Her seventh library was inaugurated last Saturday by Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav at a government high school in Sanath Nagar. The new library itself is expected to house some 610 books and aims to promote reading habits among students and expand their knowledge. Her libraries also offer different genres such as fiction, non-fiction, and sub-genres such as thriller, fantasy, science fiction, etc., in a variety of languages such as Hindi, English, and regional languages.
The first library found its home at the MNJ Cancer Child Hospital followed by another at the Sanathnagar Police Station. She established the third library at the Juvenile and Observation Home for Girls in Hyderabad and the fourth at the Gayathri Nagar Association, Borabanda.
The fifth library was set up in collaboration with the Coimbatore City Police Street Libraries and the sixth was inaugurated at the Chennai Boys Club in the Nolambur Police Station.
Reading is an engaging process. It transports you to another world. It is believed that there is one right book for everybody.
Happy Reading!
