When communalism is being perceived in the ugliest ways, it has not become entirely ugly when we notice this gesture.

A step has been taken by the Hindu and Sikh residents of Khunan Khurd village in the Muktsar district Punjab. The step is very much indicative of the fact that there are people still alive who want to keep the spirit of communal and social harmony alive.

Both the communities made financial contributions for the collection of building materials of the mosque for the five Muslim families who had no place to offer namaz. When the construction of the mosque was completed, people from different faiths including Muslims joined to inaugurate it.

The villagers also offered siropas (robes of honour) to the Muslims. The Muslim families offered their prayers to the Almighty for the first time on the last Tuesday.

We also get to know from some sources, that the waqf board had provided the Muslims with a small piece of land but the families did not have adequate or enough resources to build a mosque. The members of all the religious communities joined this event happily.

Last year, a Sikh family of Bakhatgarh in Barnala district donated a piece of land to 15 Muslim families of the village to construct a mosque. The old mosque has now been demolished for the purpose of road widening.

It's not that the communities are always at extremes with each other. People want to live in harmony unless they are provoked or incited by some negative actors. Anyway, the spirit and the beauty of India lies in this very fact of religious tolerance and it can't be shaken off easily.
