A baby boy was born on October 13 at a private hospital, but the joy was short-lived after doctors declared that it was brain-dead and not making any movement.

Organs retrieved from a 5-day-old brain-dead infant in Surat city of Gujarat have given a fresh lease of life to three children by donating his kidneys and liver.

'Immediately when the baby was born and didn't make any movements, it was suddenly shifted to another hospital and kept on a ventilator and all the efforts but in vain - the child was declared 'brain dead'.

After learning about the newborn's condition, the management members quickly reached out to the parents of the child to save lives through organ donation.

Touched by this appeal that the organs of their brain-dead son would give new life to other children, their couple and their family members gave consent for this noble cause.

The infant's grandmother played a key role in persuading the others to go for organ donation.

'Since a distant member of the Sanghani family had received a heart through an organ donation initiative many years back and she told the family that the time had come to repay the debt.

On receiving the consent of the family, doctors harvested two kidneys, liver, and spleen from the body of the infant.

As per the direction of the Gujarat State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), the corneas were donated to an eye bank in Surat while the kidneys and the spleen were immediately transported to the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad. The liver was sent to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi.

The infant's liver was successfully transplanted into a 9-month-old child in Delhi. The kidneys gave new life to two children aged 13 years and 15 years respectively.

In records of organ donation, it has been the first-of-kind donation of the youngest child in the country.

We pray to God that the extension of such a noble work should pay them off. May they be blessed with a perfect and healthy baby child in the near future.
