Recently, the country has really upholded the idea of women empowerment.
In a major victory for women officers, 108 of them would be promoted to the rank of Colonels in the Indian Army and the process for the same will be initiated from January 9, 2023.
This is the first time that women officers would be selected for 'command roles' in the Indian Army in branches including Engineers, Military Intelligence, Army Sir Defense, Ordinance and Service.
The step comes immediately after a woman officer has been deployed at the Siachen Glacier and women are being encouraged for opportunities in almost all arms and services. Captain Shiva Chauhan from the Corps of Engineers has been posted at a frontline post in Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battlefield. The officer was posted around an altitude of 15, 600 feet in the glacier region. Before being deployed here, she underwent rigorous training. The training included endurance training, ice wall climbing, avalanche and crevasse rescue and survival drills.
Women are already serving confidently and with utmost pride in various domains of the Indian Army. Women officers are being given opportunities at par with their male counterparts. The process for selection of women officers to garner command projects in Colonel rank is also in progress. Measures such as the extension of short services commission for a permanent commission with their male counterparts has already been implemented.
For over 15-20 vacancies have been reserved for women cadets in a year for National Defence Academy. Adding to this, around 80 vacancies are released for women officers in the training academies. Direct Commissioning of Women officers to Flying Branch of Army Aviation Corps has commenced from 2022.
Such an important step recalls a significant quote coming from, Zayn Malik.
'I think we need more women in positions of power across the world. I think a lot of the world's problems could be solved of we allowed more contribution from women.'
