There was an earthquake at the Bay of Bengal early morning on Tuesday, which was felt in Kolkata, Odisha and multiple regions of West Bengal. According to the OTV report, the tremors in Odisha were felt at many places which include Puri, Berhampur, Balasore and Bhubaneswar.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) stated that the earthquake took place at 6:10 in the morning, at a depth of 91 kilometers. Its epicenter was located at latitude 19.52°N and longitude 88.55°E. The earthquake was measured at 5.1on the Richter scale.
Kolkata is in Seismic Zone III, so the risk isn’t as impactful as it is in Northeastern India, but tremors are often felt as a result of the earthquake. Due to the depth of the earthquake, the intensity of the tremors was felt less on the surface as earthquakes of less depth cause more damage on the surface. There are no reports of any external damage thus far.
On January 8th a similar case had taken place where the earthquake that hit a few regions of Nepal and Tibet, was felt as tremors in Kolkata, but there were no reported damages, due to the earthquake’s epicenter being located far from the city. A senior official of the Revenue Department of Odisha stated that there was no report of loss of property or harm and referred to the impact of the earthquake as “negligible” due the location of its epicenter. There have been a few cases of tremors felt in different regions this year, such as the one on February 17th which was felt in Delhi, the earthquake was of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale. But Delhi felt the tremors more intensely due to the epicenter of the earthquake.
A moderately intense earthquake had hit Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi at 8:42 A.M. on Sunday. The earthquake was at 3.7 as its magnitude. It had struck close to Kiargi in and around Sundernagar at a depth of 7km. Mandi comes under seismic zone V which is known to be a risk-prone zone.
Social media was the main outlet for discussions of experience of people in regions that had felt the tremors. NCS had posted about the earthquake on X stating, “EQ of M: 5.1, on: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal."
